Letter from Paul W. Hamann, President, and Jeff Anderson,<br />
2008 Board Chair<br />
Dear Friends,<br />
For over 32 years, <strong>The</strong> <strong>Night</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry has been reach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
out <strong>to</strong> <strong>those</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>need</strong>: the homeless, the precariously<br />
housed, <strong>those</strong> <strong>need</strong><strong>in</strong>g healthcare, homeless youth<br />
<strong>need</strong><strong>in</strong>g a safe place <strong>to</strong> stay and someone <strong>to</strong> guide them<br />
on a path <strong>to</strong> stability, the lonely, and <strong>those</strong> whom society<br />
has forgotten. Too often, society looks as <strong>those</strong> served by<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Night</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry and can only say, “Thank God it isn’t<br />
me.”<br />
However, it is “me.” It is you. It is us.<br />
<strong>The</strong> poet John Donne, <strong>in</strong> his Meditation XVII, exhorts us <strong>to</strong><br />
remember that we are all related. Our very participation<br />
<strong>in</strong> humanity means that, when someone else suffers,<br />
we suffer. You suffer. When one experiences joy, we are<br />
joyous. You are joyous. When someone <strong>need</strong>s help, we<br />
<strong>need</strong> help. You <strong>need</strong> help. We are all dim<strong>in</strong>ished by the<br />
<strong>need</strong>s of others and are called upon <strong>to</strong> help them.<br />
When car<strong>in</strong>g, compassionate people reach out <strong>to</strong> support<br />
<strong>those</strong> who are fac<strong>in</strong>g unimag<strong>in</strong>able challenges <strong>in</strong> life, we<br />
all reach out. You reach out. You help.<br />
This past year at <strong>The</strong> <strong>Night</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry has been an<br />
extraord<strong>in</strong>ary year of reach<strong>in</strong>g out, of offer<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>help<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />
<strong>hand</strong>. Our three homeless youth hous<strong>in</strong>g programs<br />
reached their full operational capacity, realiz<strong>in</strong>g the full<br />
impact of recent growth on our services. More than 1,000<br />
adults received health care as a part of our Outreach &<br />
Health M<strong>in</strong>istry Program. Our outreach staff reached out<br />
<strong>to</strong> 4,100 <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>in</strong> <strong>need</strong> of help. More than 300 youth<br />
and their children stayed <strong>in</strong> our shelters. Our outreach<br />
staff reached out <strong>to</strong> 4,100 <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>in</strong> <strong>need</strong> of help.<br />
President Paul W. Hamann (L) and 2008 Board Chair Jeff Anderson<br />
that b<strong>in</strong>d us <strong>to</strong>gether call them <strong>to</strong> help its most vulnerable<br />
members.<br />
<strong>The</strong>y reach out <strong>to</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>Night</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry and lend us their<br />
support. In do<strong>in</strong>g so, they reach out and lend a <strong>hand</strong> <strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>those</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>need</strong>.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Night</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry is privileged <strong>to</strong> partner with you <strong>in</strong><br />
offer<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>help<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>hand</strong>. We thank you for allow<strong>in</strong>g us<br />
<strong>to</strong> do so <strong>in</strong> your name and with your support. It is only<br />
when we all work <strong>to</strong>gether: me, you, us, that we can make<br />
a difference.<br />
With much gratitude for your support of our mission,<br />
and<br />
None of this, of course, would have been possible without<br />
the support of <strong>those</strong> who partner <strong>in</strong> our work through<br />
their contributions of time, talent, and f<strong>in</strong>ancial resources.<br />
<strong>The</strong>se <strong>in</strong>dividuals and groups, <strong>in</strong> acknowledg<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
humanity they share with <strong>those</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>need</strong>, make our<br />
community stronger when they recognize that the ties<br />
