dawn.<br />
Note: The resident randi subspecies of the Philippines (except Palawan) is now considered a full<br />
species, and a rather recent split from the widespread Asian Brown Hawk Owl Ninox scutulata, a<br />
winter migrant to the Philippines. The Chocolate Hawk-Owl has a distinctive call.<br />

Note: The whole Philippine Hawk-Owl complex has currently been under review. (Kennedy & Fisher).<br />
Now, this and the next species have been split (Koenig et al. 1999). They both have distinctive<br />
vocalizations. There may be more species represented in this group in other islands.<br />
The Philippine Hawk Owl and the Mindanao Hawk-Owl are much smaller than the Brown Hawk Owl.<br />

Note: Now considered a full species - a split from Philippine Hawk-Owl. Endemic to Mindanao,<br />
Basilan, Dinagat and Siargao. See preceding comment.<br />

21/5 1 calling bird, caught in the spotlight, sitting high in a tall, single tree in forest<br />
behind Last Frontier Paradise Hotel, Sabang.<br />

seen in spotlight and heard, before dawn, We managed to call this bird in by playback,<br />
and had stonking, close views of the bird, sitting still on a branch in eye-level.<br />
What a strange creature!<br />
