GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING CURRICULUM GUIDE Middle School 42
GOALS The goals of the middle school guidance and counseling program in Pittsylvania County are to: 1. provide for the identification and intervention of problems in students to prevent interference with learning; 2. promote healthy development and learning by helping students successfully accomplish the academic, personal-social, and career developmental tasks of adolescence; 3. provide guidance and counseling to students individually and in small groups to help adolescents resolve or cope constructively with their problems and/or developmental concerns; 4. provide classroom guidance activities as needed to foster the goals of the program; 5. consult with parents and others for the mutual sharing and analysis of information and ideas to carry out strategies to help students; 6. coordinate school and community resources for the benefit of students and parents; 7. assist the student, parent, teacher, and/or administrator as necessary for the student to experience selfworth; 8. make students aware of graduation requirements and assist them in planning for appropriate high school programs of study; 9. assist students in adjusting to a middle school environment; 10. coordinate the administration of Standards of Learning, Stanford 9 and other local assessment(s); 11. work collaboratively with staff to ensure student mastery of Standards of Learning objectives and student expectations contained in the Pittsylvania County Strategic Plan for Education; and 12. assist the administrators, teachers, parents and students in interpreting test scores. 43
