One Lucky Dog<br />
Tucker, a<br />
friendly Itali<strong>an</strong><br />
Greyhound, was<br />
scheduled to<br />
be put to death<br />
at a public<br />
shelter be<strong>for</strong>e<br />
he charmed<br />
his way into our<br />
hearts.<br />
Orph<strong>an</strong>ed at just 6-years old, Tucker was slated <strong>for</strong><br />
death at a municipal shelter because of a growth<br />
on his throat. Luckily, our staff rescued him <strong>an</strong>d<br />
brought him to the <strong>Seattle</strong> Hum<strong>an</strong>e <strong>Society</strong>.<br />
At the <strong>Seattle</strong> Hum<strong>an</strong>e <strong>Society</strong>, Tucker’s growth<br />
was surgically removed <strong>an</strong>d, when tested, turned out<br />
to be a swollen salivary gl<strong>an</strong>d. Following surgery,<br />
Tucker needed several weeks of recovery time, so we<br />
placed Tucker into one of our foster homes. There,<br />
Tucker received the h<strong>an</strong>ds-on care <strong>an</strong>d attention he<br />
needed to get better.<br />
Today, Tucker has fully recovered <strong>an</strong>d is ready <strong>for</strong> us<br />
to find him a home of his own. His cheerful, loving<br />
nature is a const<strong>an</strong>t reminder that every <strong>an</strong>imal<br />
deserves a ch<strong>an</strong>ce. We are happy to have had the<br />
opportunity to meet Tucker <strong>an</strong>d are looking <strong>for</strong>ward<br />
to finding him a family.<br />
<strong>New</strong> <strong>Life</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>an</strong> <strong>Angel</strong><br />
<strong>Angel</strong>, a 15-year old cat, had spent her whole life<br />
in a loving home. When her hum<strong>an</strong> comp<strong>an</strong>ion<br />
passed away, this lonely kitty was brought to the<br />
<strong>Seattle</strong> Hum<strong>an</strong>e <strong>Society</strong>. M<strong>an</strong>y shelters are not able<br />
to provide the care <strong>an</strong>d attention older cats need, but<br />
at the <strong>Seattle</strong> Hum<strong>an</strong>e <strong>Society</strong> we never put <strong>an</strong> age<br />
limit on life.<br />
Our first priority was making sure <strong>Angel</strong> was in tiptop<br />
shape. Concerned about two large growths on<br />
both ears, our veterinari<strong>an</strong>s per<strong>for</strong>med surgery <strong>an</strong>d<br />
removed the growths. Then, we gave her a complete<br />
dental cle<strong>an</strong>ing, so she would be more com<strong>for</strong>table<br />
when she ate. We placed her in a loving foster home<br />
where she adjusted to her new life.<br />
When <strong>Angel</strong> was ready <strong>for</strong> us to find her a home of<br />
her own, someone on staff had already fallen in love.<br />
Now <strong>Angel</strong> is in a home of her own where she will<br />
get the love <strong>an</strong>d attention she deserves. She even<br />
has a couple of kitty buddies now, too!<br />

Dear Animal Lovers,<br />
Th<strong>an</strong>k you <strong>for</strong> your wonderful <strong>an</strong>d life-saving support! Through the generosity <strong>an</strong>d<br />
compassion of this community, the <strong>Seattle</strong> Hum<strong>an</strong>e <strong>Society</strong> has been able to save<br />
more <strong>an</strong>imals’ live, provide the healing presence of <strong>an</strong>imals to shut-ins <strong>an</strong>d to reach<br />
new st<strong>an</strong>dards of program excellence.<br />
Because of you, the Behavior Program is successfully tr<strong>an</strong>s<strong>for</strong>ming the behavior of<br />
dogs <strong>for</strong>merly considered unsuitable <strong>for</strong> adoption <strong>an</strong>d those dogs are living happy<br />
lives in homes of their own.<br />
Through your generosity, we have upgraded several of our <strong>an</strong>imal housing areas<br />
to help our shelter guests thrive in our care on the way to homes of their own.<br />
We installed special doors in the south dog dorm to reduce noise <strong>an</strong>d barrier<br />
frustration <strong>for</strong> our dogs. We built condos to house our adoption center cats <strong>an</strong>d<br />
created other special areas where waiting cats c<strong>an</strong> enjoy special attention from<br />
volunteers <strong>an</strong>d roam around in a room <strong>for</strong> exercise.<br />
Because of you, the <strong>Seattle</strong> Hum<strong>an</strong>e <strong>Society</strong> was able to take a bold step to help<br />
end dog fighting in King County by <strong>an</strong>nouncing a $5,000 REWARD <strong>for</strong> in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />
leading to the arrest <strong>an</strong>d conviction of <strong>an</strong>yone who org<strong>an</strong>izes dog fights,<br />
participates in dog fights, promotes dog fighting, or officiates at dog fights in King<br />
County, Washington.<br />
Assisted by members of the Hum<strong>an</strong>e Teen Club, we launched Summer Adventure<br />
Camps <strong>for</strong> Kids.<br />
All sessions were filled with students who had fun while they learned about<br />
<strong>an</strong>imals.<br />
The Pet Visiting Program has grown to 15 dogs <strong>an</strong>d two cats who, along with their<br />
owners, provide the healing presence of <strong>an</strong>imals to people in hospitals <strong>an</strong>d senior<br />
centers who c<strong>an</strong> no longer have pets of their own.<br />
Through your generosity, the MaxMobile, our new 33 foot mobile adoption,<br />
portable classroom <strong>an</strong>d emergency vehicle, has arrived!<br />
“Max” will soon be ready to roll around the county<br />
leading the way to help <strong>an</strong>imals.<br />

John <strong>an</strong>d Phyllis Hines Cat Adoption Center<br />
John H. Hines was a private m<strong>an</strong><br />
who loved <strong>an</strong>d missed his wife,<br />
Phyllis. John knew how much<br />
Phyllis loved cats. In fact, they<br />
had two cats they adored. After<br />
Phyllis’ death, John made regular<br />
gifts to the <strong>Seattle</strong> Hum<strong>an</strong>e <strong>Society</strong><br />
honoring Phyllis’ memory.<br />
John’s regular gifts in memory of<br />
Phyllis allowed him to pay tribute<br />
to her, while making a life-saving<br />
difference <strong>for</strong> the <strong>an</strong>imals. In 2004,<br />
John passed away <strong>an</strong>d continued<br />
Phyllis Hines lounging with her<br />
beloved cats.<br />
this legacy of love by leaving his<br />
entire estate to the <strong>Seattle</strong> Hum<strong>an</strong>e<br />
<strong>Society</strong>.<br />
John <strong>an</strong>d Phyllis’ generous bequest<br />
will ensure that the <strong>Seattle</strong> Hum<strong>an</strong>e<br />
<strong>Society</strong> is able to develop <strong>an</strong>d<br />
exp<strong>an</strong>d life-saving programs <strong>an</strong>d<br />
services <strong>for</strong> years to come to benefit<br />
the cats they loved so dearly.<br />

the John <strong>an</strong>d Phyllis Hines Cat<br />

Walk <strong>for</strong> the Animals<br />
Three Hundred walkers <strong>an</strong>d their dogs joined us <strong>for</strong> the<br />
5th <strong>an</strong>nual Walk <strong>for</strong> the Animals <strong>an</strong>d BowWow Bon<strong>an</strong>za<br />
at the Redmond Town Center. We are delighted to<br />
<strong>an</strong>nounce that we raised more th<strong>an</strong> $55,000!<br />
The day’s events were presented by KOMO 1000 <strong>New</strong>s,<br />
<strong>an</strong>d featured a 3K walk on the Sammamish Slough<br />
Trail. The day also included our first ever BowWow<br />
Bon<strong>an</strong>za, with a pet star search competition, a pet first-aid<br />
demonstration, Yoga <strong>for</strong> People <strong>an</strong>d Pets, <strong>an</strong>d a training<br />
demonstration. We also had food, booths, <strong>an</strong>d lots of “hot<br />
dogs” as people <strong>an</strong>d their <strong>an</strong>imals enjoyed the sunshine.<br />
The Walk <strong>for</strong> the Animals is <strong>an</strong> import<strong>an</strong>t event that raises<br />
money to make it possible <strong>for</strong> us to save the lives of<br />
thous<strong>an</strong>ds of ab<strong>an</strong>doned <strong>an</strong>imals each year. Your support<br />
makes a life-saving difference. Th<strong>an</strong>k you to those who<br />
helped with the Walk <strong>for</strong> the Animals, th<strong>an</strong>k you to those<br />

our two cats that we adopted from the <strong>Seattle</strong> Hum<strong>an</strong>e<br />
<strong>Society</strong>. We adopted Dooney in 2005 after we inst<strong>an</strong>tly<br />
fell in love with him! A year later, we felt Dooney<br />
needed a friend, so we adopted Bourke. Best friends<br />
from the start, Dooney <strong>an</strong>d Burke are inseparable. It’s<br />
as if they were made <strong>for</strong> each other! They’ve completed<br />
our family <strong>an</strong>d we are so happy to have them.<br />

I am writing you to send some pictures of<br />
Barley, a Labrador mix we adopted in mid-<br />
May. I have been a dog lover my entire life<br />
<strong>an</strong>d when the time came to adopt, I knew I had<br />
to visit the <strong>Seattle</strong> Hum<strong>an</strong>e <strong>Society</strong>. Barley<br />
quickly caught my eye, looking so h<strong>an</strong>dsome<br />
in his shiny tuxedo coat. When he proceeded to<br />
play ball with me like crazy, I knew he was my<br />
dog. As we left, Barley was the most excited<br />
dog I have ever seen. He was so happy to be<br />
leaving with us <strong>an</strong>d so were we, because we<br />
have a great new member of the family.<br />

of the road. The tiny kitten had probably<br />
been hit by a car. The Good Samarit<strong>an</strong><br />
turned to the <strong>Seattle</strong> Hum<strong>an</strong>e <strong>Society</strong><br />
<strong>for</strong> help <strong>for</strong> the foundling. The <strong>Seattle</strong><br />
Hum<strong>an</strong>e <strong>Society</strong> vets per<strong>for</strong>med lifesaving<br />
surgery <strong>an</strong>d removed Bif<strong>for</strong>d<br />
James’ right rear leg. The little tike is<br />
growing, adapting <strong>an</strong>d making friends.<br />
We are so happy that he is in a home of<br />
his own.<br />

Animal Adventures Day Camp<br />
Dear SHS,<br />
I just w<strong>an</strong>ted to send a note to let you know how much fun<br />
my daughter Ashley <strong>an</strong>d her friend had last week at camp! It<br />
sounded like every day was packed full of different activities<br />
that kept them busy <strong>an</strong>d learning while having lots of fun!!!<br />
That is a great accomplishment <strong>for</strong> a camp dealing with<br />
11-year olds!!!!!<br />
The only downfall was Ashley fell in love with several<br />
<strong>an</strong>imals <strong>an</strong>d w<strong>an</strong>ted to adopt them all (Sonic the cat, the<br />
bunny, a rat, etc.).<br />

Stripey was not a lucky cat until she arrived at the<br />
<strong>Seattle</strong> Hum<strong>an</strong>e <strong>Society</strong>. Although she is only 4-years<br />
old, our medical team discovered that she has a heart<br />
murmur <strong>an</strong>d some seizures. At most shelters, Stripey<br />
would not have been given a ch<strong>an</strong>ce, but at the <strong>Seattle</strong><br />
Hum<strong>an</strong>e <strong>Society</strong>, we saw a wonderful <strong>an</strong>d loving cat<br />
who deserved that <strong>an</strong>d more. Our vets have regulated<br />
her medication to m<strong>an</strong>age her medical conditions <strong>an</strong>d<br />
she is waiting <strong>for</strong> us to find her a home of her own.<br />

Polly<br />
Our staff rescued 9-month old Polly from death row<br />
at a municipal shelter where she had run out of time.<br />
Practically hairless, we knew Polly was a diamond<br />
in the rough, <strong>an</strong>d worked hard to nurse her back to<br />
health. Now, Polly has a healthy coat of fur <strong>an</strong>d a<br />
home of her own!<br />

<strong>for</strong> saving Percy’s life. I’ve seen his<br />
medical records, <strong>an</strong>d he must have been<br />
near death when saved from the streets.<br />
There aren’t m<strong>an</strong>y people or org<strong>an</strong>izations<br />
in this world who would have worked so<br />
hard to save a sickly, crippled cat.<br />
I am th<strong>an</strong>kful every day that you did. Percy<br />
has added <strong>an</strong> immeasurable dimension<br />
to my life. While I love all of my pets,<br />
Percy is something special. He has a way<br />
of creeping into one’s heart - I know you<br />

<strong>Seattle</strong> Hum<strong>an</strong>e <strong>Society</strong>, we believe all loving <strong>an</strong>imals<br />
deserve homes of their own, whatever their breed. Corey<br />
is such a great ambassador; he made a couple of public<br />
appear<strong>an</strong>ces with our CEO as we campaigned against dog<br />
fighting. In the process, we found Corey a new family of<br />
