<strong>NDS</strong> Gravel <strong>Pavers</strong> - Design<br />

The proper design and installation of EZ Roll TM<br />

Gravel <strong>Pavers</strong> results in a self-draining system that saves<br />

money on additional drainage and retention systems.<br />

Design Considerations:<br />

• High-traffic areas should have a slope<br />

less than 8%<br />

• Light-traffic, bicycle and pedestrian areas can<br />

have a slope of up to 10%<br />

• Percolation rates of underlying soils should be<br />

between 0.64 cm of water per hour<br />

• Water table should be approximately 3 feet<br />

below base course<br />

• Bedrock should not be closer than 2 feet below<br />

base course<br />

• Surrounding hardscape areas should be<br />

slightly higher than gravel paver surface<br />

• Gravel paver installation should be at least<br />

10 feet away from building structure<br />

• Keep adjacent areas free of sediment<br />

and erosion<br />

Depth of Base Course<br />

To calculate the depth and composition of material<br />

for the base course, consider:<br />

• Load-bearing capacity of subsoil<br />

• Plasticity or impact of moisture<br />

• Frost-heave potential<br />

• Traffic load<br />

Typical base course depths are:<br />

• Golf carts and pedestrian traffic – 0 to 4 inches<br />

• Cars and light vehicles – 0 to 6 inches<br />

• Buses, trucks and fire engines – 6 to 12 inches<br />

Always consult with a soil engineer for site-specific base<br />

requirements. Compact base course with a vibrating plate type<br />

compactor or a heavy motorized roller. Test porosity of base<br />

course with a water hose to see if water drains properly through<br />

base course.<br />
