EZ Roll Gravel PaverCASE STUDYProject InformationThe Dallas Arboretum is anationally acclaimed botanicalgarden situated on 66 acres onthe shores of White Rock Lakein Dallas, Texas. The venue is animportant, high-profile facility thatgenerates critical tourism andincome to the area. In 2011, morethan 500,000 visitors from over 50countries walked through its gatesto enjoy the scenery and activities. As part of an active expansion andimprovement program, the DallasArboretum needed additionalparking to accommodate theforecasted rise in traffic volumeinto the park over the next decade. The new parking structure neededto blend into the surrounding areawhile mitigating stormwater runoffconcerns. In close collaborationwith the City of Dallas, the designteam decided to use a natural, permeable surface capable ofwithstanding heavy parkinglot traffic. After comparing thevarious products available, thedesign team chose tan-coloredNDS EZ Roll Gravel Pavers fortheir strength, durability and easeof installation.EZ Roll is an ADA-compliantresin-based cellular reinforcementsystem that houses stone in-fill,supports heavy vehicular loads, maintains surface permeability, and prohibits rutting. The pavercomes in 4 X 150’ units (600sq ft) that are rolled out over acompacted, permeable engineeredbase layer, and filled with 3/8”angular clean stone. EZ RollGravel Paver is available in black, tan, gray, and brick red to blend inwith any colored natural stone fill.Phase 1 of the project involvedinstalling EZ Roll in a parking areaspanning approximately 75,000sq. ft. The design team neededto delineate driving lanes fromparking stalls, so NDS designed, developed, and delivered the EZMarker system—a high-impactplastic marking dome that securelyfastens into the paver’s cells andrises ¾” above the grid.NDS reps worked closely withthe design team and contractorsthroughout the project to ensureproper technical and designsupport, on-time delivery, and installation consultations.According to Christopher Lang,Senior Project Manager for GCTurner Construction Company,“The NDS product and customerservice were excellent. The EZRoll Gravel Pavers provided atough and permeable surfacethat blended with the beautifulscenery of the Dallas Arboretum.NDS provided the flexibility, engineering, and site visits neededto ensure quality installation andultimate performance.”Phase 2 of the parking project willbegin in mid-November and willinclude up to 110,000 sq. ft. ofpermeable paving. The scheduleallows for construction to becompleted by the first weekendof March 2013, just in time for theannual Dallas Blooms event that isexpected to attract nearly 200,000visitors to the Arboretum. For more information about thisproject, contact NDS Marketing atmarketing@ndspro.com.
