Message from The Premier 

As Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island, I 

am pleased to extend greeting on behalf of Her 

Majesty the Queen. 

I want to thank The Royal Canadian Legion for 

producing this fourth booklet dedicated to the 

memory of those who served in the two World Wars 

and the Korean War. It is important to recognize the 

part these soldiers played in ensuring the freedom 

of all Canadians. 

As Islanders, we remember the courage an 

commitment of those who have given, and those 

who contunue to offer, their lives in service to their 

country. 

Let there be peace on earth 

Recognizing the contribution of all those veterans 

of the First World War, SecondWorld War and the 

Korean War is a responsibility of all Canadians. 

For that reason, I would like to extend my thanks 

and congratulations to The Royal Canadian Legion 

on their Fourth Edition of the War Service 

Recognition Booklet. 

One of the greatest services provided to Canadians 

by The Royal Canadian Legion is the preservations 

and nuturing of our collective and individual 

memory of these wars o fthese wars. This effort is 

greatly appreciated by all Islanders.

P.E.I. Command of The Royal Canadian Legion would like to thank all those who made possible the 4 t h 

War Time Service Recognition Booklet. The co-operation of Branches, Ladies’ Auxiliaries and individuals, 

and the continued support of advertisers and donors is very gratifying. 

This year, the 90 t h Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, is yet another reminder of the sacrifices made 

by our Veterans to preserve the values which we, as canadians, cherish, namely peace, freedom, truth and 

j u s t i c e . 

These booklets will help keep alive the memory of our veterans who served their country and sovereign 

during the two World Wars and the Korean Wa r, but let us also remember those who served with United 

Nations missions, NATO operations and especially our present day Afghanistan veterans. 

Proceeds from this booklet are used to assist Legion programs such as Veterans Service Bureau, Legion 

National Track & Field Meet for athletes 17 years and under and bursaries.

WWII 

Daniel was born on October 6, 1923 in Forest Hill. He enlisted with the Royal 

Canadian Regiment in January 1943 and served in Italy, France and 

Germany until March 1946. 

ADAMS, Herbert Roy 

WWII 

Herbert was born in Alberton, PEI. He enlisted in the Army on February 26, 

1941 and was discharged with the rank of Sergeant on January 13, 1945. 

AHEARN, John Russell 

WWII & Korea 

John enlisted in the Canadian Army on March 30, 1943. He served in the 

United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean Area and Continental Europe. He 

was discharged in 1946, and re-enlisted in 1950 with an honourable discharge 

in 1952. 

ALLAIN, Francois D. 

WWI 

Francois was born in Alberton, PEI. He served the Army from August 5, 1918 

until being discharged as Private on January 18, 1919. 

ALLAN, Lee C. 

WWI & WWII 

Lee was born on April 7, 1893 in Cardigan, PEI. He served in the 98 th Siege 

Battery during WWI, and the Canadian Army during WWII. Lee passed away 

in February 1977 and is buried in Cardigan.

Alfred enlisted in the Army on November 19, 1942. He served with the Royal 

Canadian Ordnance Corps and went overseas in 1943.

WWII 

Augustin joined the Army on September 22, 1941 and served in the Royal 

Canadian Engineers in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. 

ARSENAULT, Cyrus J. 

WWII 

Cyrus enlisted in the PEI Highlanders on May 20, 1940 and served overseas 

during the war with the Cape Breton Highlanders in Italy, France, Belgium and 

Holland. He was wounded on January 17, 1944 during the Italian campaign. 

BANKS, Chester Glenwood 

WWII 

Chester was born on July 18, 1916. He joined the Halifax Army Service Corp 

in January of 1940. He served until his discharge on March 2, 1946. 

BANKS, Margaret Ellen “Nellie” 

WWII 

Nellie was born on February 16, 1914 in Poplar Point, PEI. She enlisted with 

the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 and served as a cook until her 

discharge in 1946. Nellie passed away on October 17, 2001, she is buried in 

the Dundas United Church Cemetery.

Earl was born in Alma, PEI. He served the R.C.N.V.R. from April 1941 until 

November 1946 as Leading Seaman. 

BENNET, Frederick Charles 

WWI 

Frederick was born in Alberton, PEI. He served the Army with the 231 st 

Overseas Battalion and the 72 nd Battalion in France. He enlisted on April 1, 

1916 and discharged as Private on March 3, 1919.

Joseph was born in Bloomfield, PEI. He served the Army as Private with the 

105 th and 12 th Battalions, enlisting on March 10, 1916 and being discharged 

on June 15, 1919. 

BIRCH, Raymond Sydney

Raymond was born on September 24, 1919 in Port Hill. He enlisted with the 

Royal Canadian Artillery on December 6, 1940. He served in the United 

Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium and Holland as a Wireless Operator 

until his discharge on December 3, 1945. Raymond passed away on August 

12, 2005. 

BIRCH, William Thomas 

WWII 

William was born on November 20, 1917 in Port Hill, PEI. He enlisted in 1939 

and was Staff Sergeant with the Provost Corps stationed in Sydney and Cape 

Breton. He served until his discharge in 1945. Willie passed away on October 

12, 2002.

Raymond was born in Bloomfield, PEI. He served as a Private in the Army 

from December 4, 1952 until December 21, 1955.

Claude passed away in 1986.

James was born on May 23, 1894 in Breadalbane, PEI. He enlisted on 

October 16, 1916 and served with the 105 th Battalion, 2 nd Canadian Infantry 

Works Battalion and the 4 th Labour Battalion. He served in Canada, Britain, 

France and Belgium until his discharge on May 29, 1919. James is deceased. 

BROWN, John Harold 

WWI 

John was born on January 10, 1895 in South Granville, PEI. He served in the 

105 th and 13 th Battalions. John died on September 5, 1918 in France due to 

his wounds. He received the Victory and British War Medals. 

CAMPBELL, Cecil Edgar 

WWI 

Cecil was born on May 28, 1895 on Whim Road, PEI. He enlisted on June 

15, 1917 with the 236 th Over Seas Battalion (New Brunswick Kilties – Sir 

Sams Own) as part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He served in 

England and in France. He was wounded in action on September 29, 1918 

at Cambrai, France. He was discharged on May 17, 1919. Cecil passed 

away in 1974.

WWII 

Gordon was born in Milo, PEI. He enlisted on July 28, 1941 and served with 

the Royal Canadian Air Force until the end of the war. Gordon passed away 

on September 28, 1975. 

CAMPBELL, J. A. “Gus” 

WWII 

Gus was born on July 25, 1918 on the Line Road in Souris, PEI. He enlisted 

with the 2 nd Medium Battery, R.C.A. on September 2, 1939. He went 

overseas on January 26, 1940, and landed in Greenrock, Scotland. He 

served in Great Britain, Sicily, France, Belgium and Holland. He came home 

to PEI on June 16, 1945. Gus passed away on May 28, 1993. 

CAMPBELL, R. Douglas 

WWI Killed in Action 

Douglas was born in Alberton, PEI. He served as a Private in the Army, 105 th 

Battalion and 13 th Battalion, Canadian Infantry from November 20, 1915 until 

he was killed in action at Vimy Ridge, France on August 15, 1917. 

CAMPBELL, Roy Spurgeon 

WWII 

Roy was born in 1915 in Brae, PEI. He enlisted with the Prince Edward 

Highlanders in July of 1940. He served with the Cape Breton Highlanders in 

the United Kingdom, Italy, France and Holland. 

CAMPBELL, Simon Alexander 

WWI 

Simon was born in Brooklyn, King’s County, PEI in 1890. He served in the 

Canadian Army Overseas Expeditionary Forces and the Canadian Field 

Artillery from 1914-1919. He was awarded the Military Medal. Simon passed 

away in 1967.

Seldon was born on October 20, 1909 in Bristol, Lot 40. He enlisted on 

December 9, 1940 and served in Canada, United Kingdom, and Continental 

Europe. Seldon passed away on January 26, 2002, and is buried in West St. 

Peters Cemetery.

DUNNING, Francis 

WWII 

Francis was born on March 8, 1915 in Long River, PEI. He enlisted with the 

Prince Edward Island Highlanders on July 15, 1940 and served in Canada, 

North Atlantic arena, United Kingdom, and Central Mediterranean arena until 

his discharge on April 15, 1946. Francis passed away on February 16, 1966. 

FOLEY, John Joseph 

WWII 

John was born on February 19, 1912 in St. Theresa, PEI. He served with the 

8 th Battery, Royal Canadian Army from 1939-1945 in Heavy Artillery and Anti 

Aircraft in Europe. John has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion 

for sixty years. He attends Remembrance Day activities and regular 

meetings. 

GALLANT, Alcide 

WWII 

Alcide enlisted in the Canadian Army in May 1942. He served with the Perth 

Regiment in England and Italy. He was taken prisoner at the battle of Arielli 

on January 16, 1943 just before the battle of Ortona. He was held prisoner 

for sixteen months in Germany. 

GALLANT, Anthony H. 

WWII Killed in Action 

Anthony was born on January 18, 1919. He joined the North Nova Scotia 

Highlanders in 1941 and served in the United Kingdom until 1944. Anthony 

was killed in action on June 7, 1944, the day after D-Day in Normandy, 

France. His grave is located in Beny-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery. 

GALLANT, Antoine Hermas 

WWI 

Antoine was born in Cape Egmont, PEI on December 24, 1923. He enlisted 

in the West Nova Scotia Regiment in the fall of 1943. He was transferred 

overseas, serving in England and Italy, until he was killed in action in Italy on 

August 31, 1944.

Bélonie enlisted in the Army on May 15, 1941 and served until 1946. He 

served with the 6 th Royal Canadian Hussars (5 th Canadian Armoured 

Division) in Canada, the United Kingdom, Continental Europe and in the 

Italian campaign. Bélonie is deceased.

Cornelius was born in Cardigan, PEI. He served in the 105 th Regiment, 13 th 

Battery during WWI. Cornelius passed away on January 22, 1949, and is 

buried at All Saints Cemetery in Cardigan. 

GALLANT, Fidèle Cyrus 

WWII 

Fidèle enlisted in the PEI Highlanders on May 15, 1940. In April 1943, he 

went to England and joined the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. He saw 

action on D-Day.

Francis was born in Charlottetown, PEI. He served on the HMCS Raccoon, 

which was torpedoed on September 7, 1942. His name was inscribed on the 

Halifax memorial erected to remember those who died at Sea.

Fred enlisted in the Army on June 5, 1940 at the age of seventeen. He served 

with the PEI Highlanders and West Nova Scotia Regiment in Canada, Sicily 

and Italy. Fred lost his right arm and most of his hearing in battle at Ortona, 

Italy.

Thomas was born in Duvar, PEI. He served as Corporal in the Army with 

Carleton York Regiment in New Brunswick from May 13, 1943 to June 25, 

1945. 

GARDHAM, Tom 

WWII 

Tom was born on January 19, 1906 in England. He joined the Royal Canadian 

Army Medical Corp on May 5, 1941. He served in England and Europe until 

he was discharged on October 16, 1945. He served in the reserve force for 

several years after the war and was promoted to Regimental Sergeant Major 

on April 1, 1947. Tom passed away on March 20, 1966. 

GAUDET, Clifford 

WWII 

Clifford enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on December 12, 1942. He 

served as R.C.A.F. Service Police in Saskatchewan, Alberta, New Brunswick, 

Labrador and Nova Scotia. 

GAUDET, Edmond 

WWII 

Edmond enlisted in the Army on November 25, 1939. He served with the 

Three Rivers Regiment, Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers 

in Canada, the United Kingdom, the Central Mediterranean Area and 

Continental Europe. 

GILLESPIE, Bruce 

WWII 

Bruce was born on August 27, 1924 in Montreal. In August 1943, he joined 

the R.C.N.V.R. He served on the High Seas in the Atlantic until his discharge 

in December 1945.

MACARTHUR, James Gordon 

WWI 

James (Spelled McArthur on Attestation Paper and on Military Medal) was 

born in Tyne Valley, PEI in 1887. He enlisted with the 105 th Infantry Battalion 

PEI Highlanders from 1914-1918 and served overseas in France. He was 

awarded the Military Medal for bravery at Vimy Ridge. James passed away 

on May 8, 1986. 

MACAULEY, Daniel Joseph 

WWII 

Daniel was born in 1915 in Cardigan, PEI. He served in the Canadian Army 

overseas. Daniel passed away in March 1997 and is buried at All Saints 

Parish Cemetery in Cardigan. 

MACAUSLAND, Vincent F. O. 


Vincent was born in Tyne Valley, PEI. He joined the R.C.A.F., and in 1943 he 

was assigned to 617 th Squadron (R.A.F.) known as the “Dambusters 

Squadron.” He trained as a Bomb Aimer and took part in the mission known 

as operation “Chastise” on the night of May 16/17, 1943. Vincent’s plane was 

shot down by coastal batteries and crashed into the North Sea with no 

survivors. 

MACCANNELL, Neil 

WWII 

Neil was born in 1918 in Lorne Valley, PEI. He joined the Army in 1941 and 

served overseas. Neil passed away in 1998 in Charlottetown, PEI. 

MACCORMACK, D. Leonard 

WWII 

Leonard was born in Souris, PEI. He was a veteran of the Second World War, 

serving from 1914-1918 at Vimy Ridge and Ypres. He also served as a 

member of the Veterans Guard of Canada from 1942-1944.

Robert was born on April 4, 1888 in Fortune Bay, PEI. He joined the Army as 

a Private and was wounded at Vimy Ridge. Robert passed away on June 3, 

1952 and is buried in Dundas Cemetery.

William was born on October 20, 1908 in Little Pond, PEI. He joined the 2 nd 

Battery in 1939 and served overseas from 1940 to 1945. William passed 

away on December 10, 1987.

Art was born in Cardoss, PEI. He served as a bombardier from 1941 to 1945. 

Art passed away in 2006.

World War One. Joseph passed away in 1952 and is buried at the Catholic 

Cemetery in Cardigan, PEI.

June 12, 1917 and served in France and Belgium. Angus passed away in 

August of 1979.

Canadian Army on August 15, 1942 and joined the West Nova Scotia 

Regiment. He served in Italy, France, Germany and Holland until his

Gerald was born on April 19, 1921 in Murray Harbour, PEI. He enlisted with 

the Royal Canadian Naval Regiment on May 17, 1943 as an Able Seaman.

December 23, 1943 until October 9, 1945. Gerald passed away on 

November 15, 2001.

Heath was born in Alberton, PEI. He served the Canadian Army with the 1 st 

Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment from 1951-1953 as a Private. The 

photograph, “The Face of War,” is of Heath Matthews. It was used in the 

booklet on the Korean War published by Veterans Affairs. It was also used 

on a poster for the War Museum to commemorate the 40 th Anniversary of the 

Korean War.

War Two. James passed away on April 20, 1975.

Morgan was born in November 1922 on Appin Road, PEI. He enlisted with 

the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and served in communications as 

WOG/A and Radar, he was released to Class “E” reserve in 1946. He was a 

member of the Ground Observer Corps until 1956. He rejoined the Air Force 

under the Mobilization Assignment Training Plan (MATP) in 1956 and was 

discharged in 1959.

joined the US Army, serving in the Pacific. Charles passed away in 1983.

MCLAREN, John 


John was born in Souris, PEI. He served as a member of the Cape Breton 

Highlanders during the Second World War. John was killed in action at the 

age of twenty-four. He is buried in Holten Cemetery, Holland. 

MCLEAN, Roderick Sterling 

WWII 

Roderick was born on January 11, 1907 at Lot 16 in PEI. He enlisted in the 

R.C.E.M.E. on September 5, 1939 and served in Canada, United Kingdom, 

Sicily and Northwest Europe until his discharge on April 9, 1947. He rejoined 

on May 1, 1947 and was discharged on August 8, 1948. Roderick passed 

away on December 4, 1982. 

MORRISON, Edgar H. “Eddy” 

WWII 

Eddy was born on November 9, 1918 in Conway, PEI. He enlisted with the 

R.C.N.R. in 1938. During World War Two, he joined the R.C.N. and served 

mostly on convoy duty in the North Atlantic. He also served in the Pacific theatre. 

Eddy passed away on October 7, 1979 in Conway. 

MORRISON, Edward R. “Ned” WWI Killed in Action 

Ned was born at Ellerslie, PEI on October 20, 1895. He joined the Army and 

served overseas. He was wounded on August 18, 1917. On September 2, 

1918, Ned was killed in action during the battle of Amiens. He is buried in 

Dominion Cemetery in France. 

MORRISON, George V. 

WWII 

George was born on November 25, 1916 in Conway, P.E.I. He enlisted in the 

R.C.N.R. on February 7, 1938, and during World War Two, he joined the 

R.C.N. Most of his war service was in the Atlantic theatre between St. John’s, 

Halifax, and Londonderry, Northern Ireland. He was discharged in 1945 and 

resided at Conway until his death on June 20, 1977.

MORRISON, Harry E. WWI Killed in Action 

Harry was born on October 31, 1899 in Ellerslie, PEI. He enlisted in 

Charlottetown, PEI on October 29, 1915 in the 82 nd Regiment and then was 

transferred to the 105 th Battalion, Prince Edward Island Highlanders. He then 

transferred to the 14 th Battalion, Royal Montreal Regiment, on December 5, 

1916, reaching France on December 7, 1916. Harry was killed in action on 

March 3, 1917, near Bully Grenay, France. He is buried at Maroc British 

Cemetery in France. 

MORRISON, J. Clinton, Sr. “Clint” 

WWII 

Clint was born on July 18, 1914 in Conway, PEI. He enlisted with the Royal 

Canadian Air Force on August 23, 1940 and served on the High Seas until he 

was discharged on October 10, 1945. Clint passed away on July 26, 1990 in 

Conway. 

MURL, Leamon 

WWII 

Leamon was born on June 23, 1902 in Freetown, PEI. He served with the 

North Nova Scotia Highlanders in England and Holland. Leamon served a 

total of 36 years with the Canadian Army. 

NICHOLSON, Alex 

WWII 

Alex served overseas with the Canadian Engineers. 

NICHOLSON, Alexander Pope 


Pope was born on September 30, 1894 in Montague, PEI. On May 11, 1915, 

he enlisted with the 56 th Battalion in Calgary, Alberta. He was killed in action 

on September 27, 1916 while serving with the 31 st Battalion. Pope is buried 

in Plot III, Row C, Grave 4, in Regina Trench Cemetery in Grandcourt, France.

NICHOLSON, John Samuel 


Sam was born on November 9, 1898 in Montague, PEI. He enlisted with the 

105 th Battalion in Charlottetown, PEI on December 4, 1915. He was killed in 

action on August 28, 1918 while serving with the 26 th Battalion. Sam is 

buried in Row B, Grave 10 in Sun Quarry Cemetery in Cherisy, France. 

PINEAU, Camille Joseph 

WWII 

Camille was born in Duvar, PEI. He served the Army as Private with the 

Infantry from January 6, 1943 until 1945. 

PINEAU, Paul 

WWI 

Paul was born in Bloomfield, PEI. He served with the 105 th Battalion and 

78 th Battalion Canadian Infantry Manitoba Regiment as Private from April 4, 

1916 to September 2, 1918. 

POIRER, Joseph Ulric 

WWII 

Joseph enlisted in the Army on July 16, 1942. After his basic training in 

Charlottetown, he was engaged in clerical duties with Search Light troops, 

attached to Air Force bases in Canada. He served in Canada and overseas 

with the rank of Bdr. in Artillery, training on 30 and 60 lbs. guns. In Europe, 

he was attached to Army Headquarters, serving in England, Belgium and 

Holland. 

QUINN, Richard H. 

WWI 

Richard was born on November 1, 1895 in Cardross, PEI. He served in the 

CEF overseas during World War One. Richard passed away on April 21, 

1965.

Canadian Navy from 1941 to 1945. Clarence passed away in 1967 in Boston.

STEWART, Arthur Currie “Ted” 


Ted was born on October 7, 1918 in Glen William, Kings County, PEI. He 

joined the Army in 1940 with the PEI Lighthorse Division, and transferred to 

the R.C.N. when the war broke out. He served on the High Seas and in 

Canada. He later joined the Air Force from 1950-1959. Arthur passed away 

on February 12, 2006. 

STEWART, Frederick B. 


Frederick was born on December 13, 1922 in Beach Point, PEI. He served 

with the West Nova Scotia Regiment. Frederick was killed in action on 

October 22, 1943 and is buried in Agira Cemetery in Sicily, Italy. 

STEWART, George Daniel 

WWII 

George was born on February 9, 1911 in Kilmur, PEI. He served with the 6 th 

Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Army in Europe from 1941-1945. George 

passed away on August 25, 1961. 

STEWART, Harry Linden 


Harry was born on March 21, 1915 in Kilmur, PEI. He served from 1940-1951 

with the Special Forces, PEI Highlanders, Royal Canadian Artillery, and the 

Canadian Armoured Brigade. Harry passed away on February 26, 1973.

Warren was born on November 8, 1919 in Beach Point, PEI. He served with 

the R.C.N.R. during World War Two. Warren passed away in April of 1962 in 

Ontario.

R.C.N.R. during the Second World War, and the R.C.E. during the Korean 

War. Wilson passed away on January 14, 1990.

One, he served overseas with the 105 th Battalion Army and he served as a 

Shipwright in the Navy during World War Two. John passed away on January

Royal Canadian Navy during the War. Robert passed away in 1994.

John was born on December 25, 1917 in Charlottetown, PEI. He joined the 

PEI Highlanders and then the Cape Breton Highlanders and served in Italy 

and Northern Europe. John passed away on January 21, 1949 in the 

Provincial Sanitorium from Tuberculosis.

Samuel was born on February 11, 1922 in Charlottetown, PEI. He joined the 

Army in 1941 and served overseas in Holland, Belgium, Italy, France, 

Germany and North Africa. Samuel currently resides in the Atlantic Baptist 

Nursing Home in Charlottetown. 

WOOD, Milton 

WWII 

Milton was born on June 23, 1915 in Vernon River, PEI. He enlisted with the 

R.C.A.F. on November 17, 1941 and served in Trenton, Ontario. He opened 

the Bombing and Gunnery School in Mount Pleasant, PEI.

EVERYDAY IS REMEMBRANCE DAY 

‘Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone, 

In a one bedroom house of plaster and stone. 

I had come down the chimney with presents to give, 

And to see just who in this home did live. 

I looked all about, a strange sight to see, 

No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree. 

No stocking by mantle, just boots filled with sand, 

On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands. 

With Medals and Badges, awards of all kinds, 

A sober thought came through my mind. 

For this house was different, it was dark and dreary, 

I found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly. 

The soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone, 

Curled up on the floor in this one bedroom home. 

The face was so gentle, the room in disorder, 

Not how I pictured a Canadian Soldier. 

Who was this hero of whom I’d just read, 

Curled up on a poncho, the floor for a bed? 

I realized the families that I saw this night, 

Owed their lives to these soldiers who were willing to fight. 

Soon ‘round the world, the children would play, 

And grownups would celebrate a bright Christmas Day. 

They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year, 

Because of the soldiers, like the one lying here. 

I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone, 

One a cold Christmas Eve, in a land far from home. 

The very thought brought a tear to my eye, 

I dropped to my knees and started to cry. 

The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice, 

“Santa, don’t cry, this life is my choice”. 

I fight for my freedom, I don’t ask for more, 

My life is my God, my Country, My Corps. 

The soldier rolled over and drifted to sleep 

I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep. 

I kept watch for hours, so silent and still, 

And we both shivered from the cold night’s chill. 

I didn’t want to leave on that cold, dark night, 

This Guardian of Honour, so willing to fight. 

Then the solider rolled over, with a voice soft and pure, 

Whispered, “Carry on Santa, It’s Christmas Day, All is Secure”. 

One look at my watch, and I knew he was right, 

“Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a Good Night”. 

Written by a Peacekeeping Soldier stationed overseas.
