wishes to The Royal Canadian Legion on the publication of this fifth edition of the ‘War Service 

Recognition Booklet’. 

Islanders have a long and proud tradition of responding to the call of duty both in times of peace and 

conflict. This particular publication will serve as a lasting legacy to the commitment and dedication of 

Island veterans who served our country during two World Wars and the Korean War. 

Let us continue to honour the memory of those individuals who fought to ensure the freedom we enjoy 

today.

This year commemorates the 90 th Anniversary of the signing of the Armistice which ended World War I 

at 11:00 a.m. on the 11 th November 1918. This “war to end all wars” was unfortunately followed by 

WWII, the Korean War, numerous U.N. peace-keeping missions and NATO operations and, currently the 

war in Afghanistan. Canadian soldiers, sailors and airmen have always been ready and willing to assist 

their allies in the pursuit of democracy, freedom and human rights. 

In this, the 5 th volume of the War Time Recognition Booklet, it is our honour to recognize those who 

served their country and it is the Legion’s duty to keep their memories alive. 

PEI Command of The Royal Canadian Legion would like to thank all those who submitted information 

for this booklet and also the support of advertisers and donors who make its production possible. 

Proceeds from this booklet are used to assist Legion programs, which include education bursaries, 

National Track and Field meet for youth and the Veteran’s Service Bureau.

George was born in Alberton, PEI. He enlisted as a Private in the 

Army R.C.O.C. on September 10, 1939, serving in Canada. He 

received his discharge on February 12, 1940. 

AHEARN, Eileen Matilda WWII 

Eileen was born in PEI. She enlisted in the Canadian Womenʼs Army 

Corps on June 23, 1943. Eileen served in the Canadian Active Army 

and was discharged on August 18, 1944, when she was unable to meet 

the required military medical standard. 

ALBERT, William Henry WWII 

William enlisted in the Canadian Army Ordinance Corps on April 15, 

1942, serving as a Corporal in Canada, the UK and Continental 

Europe. 

ARSENAULT, Albin Joseph KOREAN WAR 

Albin, son of Andre and Leonide Arsenault, enlisted in the Canadian 

Army (regular) on August 28, 1951 and served as a craftsman in 

Canada and in the Far East with No. 2 Canadian Infantry Workshop, 

Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Albin was killed 

on July 3, 1955 as the result of a motor vehicle accident while serving 

at Saint John, N.B. 



ARSENAULT, Antonin (Thompson) WWII 

Antonin, adopted son of Alcide A. Arsenault and Marie Gallant, served 

in the Army and Royal Canadian Air Force in Canada and Korea.

ARSENAULT, Cyrus WWII 

Cyrus was born in St. Louis, PEI. He enlisted on January 5, 1943, and 

served in the Central Mediterranean Area, the United Kingdom and 

Continental Europe. Upon his discharge on March 23, 1946, Cyrus 

returned to St. Louis. 

ARSENAULT, Emile KOREAN WAR 

Emile is the son of Andre and Leonide Arsenault. He enlisted in the 

Canadian Army in August 1950. He served with the Royal 22 nd 

Regiment during the Korean Conflict and was discharged in November 

1952. 

ARSENAULT, Fred WWII 

Fred was born in St. Louis, PEI. After joining the Army in June 1940, 

he served fourteen months in Newfoundland. In 1942, he went to 

England where he was transferred to the Cape Breton Highlanders. 

He spent fourteen months in Italy, and in June 1945, he went to 

Holland and then to Halifax. Upon his discharge on December 15, 

1945, Fred returned to St. Louis. 

ARSENAULT, Theophile WWI Killed in Action 

Theophile, son of Leon (Jean O.) Arsenault and Elizabeth LeBlanc, 

served in the First World War in England and France. He was killed in 

action on May 5, 1917 at the age of 19. 



ARSENAULT, Ulric J. Octave “Spud” WWI 

Ulric is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Felix Arsenault. He enlisted in 

the First World War at the age of sixteen, on November 30, 1915. He 

served in Canada and overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary 

Force in the 105 th and 26 th Battalions. He was twice wounded in 

action while serving in France, and was discharged on January 10, 

1919 in Charlottetown. Ulric is buried in Summerside, PEI.

ARSENAULT, Wilbert WWI 

Wilbert, son of Prospere and Cecile Arsenault, enlisted in the First 

World War in January, 1915. He served in France and in Belgium with 

the Canadian Army and was discharged in January 1919. Wilbert reenlisted 

in the Veterans Guard of Canada in 1940 and served in 

Canada and in the USA until his discharge in December 1944. 

ARSENAULT, William WWI 

William, son of Arcade and Adeline Arsenault, worked for the postal 

service in the American Army during World War One. 

AUCOIN, Glorice “Wedge” WWI 

Glorice, son of Aime Aucoin and Marie Poirier, enlisted in the First 

World War in 1915. He served with the 105 th Battalion in Canada and 

Europe, and was discharged in 1919. 

AYERS, Ada Gertrude WWI 

Ada, daughter of Patrick Ayers and Jane Rowe, served in the Navy 

Nurse Corps of the American Expeditionary Force in England from 

1918 to 1919. Later, she was sent by the American Red Cross to do 

relief work in Siberia, where she worked until it was evacuated 

because of the approaching Bolsheviks. Ada passed away in 1940. 



AYERS, James Bernard WWI 

James, son of James P. Ayers and Elizabeth Praught, served in World War 

One. The family records show that during the war, James and a comradein-arms 

were at the front together in France with very little food. Meeting 

an elderly woman milking a cow, his comrade, who did his schooling in 

Abramʼs Village and spoke French fluently, spoke to her in French and she 

gave them shelter, food and milk. Jim used to relate that this incident may 

have saved his life in war days.

Arthur, son of James and Laura Baglole, served in Canada and 

England from 1917 to 1918 during World War One. He was discharged 

on July 18, 1919. Arthur also served in World War Two from 1941- 

1946 in Canada and in the Caribbean. He was discharged on July 15, 

1946. 

BAGLOLE, Oliver James WWI 

Oliver enlisted in the 105 th Battalion (C.E.F.) on December 23, 1916. 

He served in Canada and in England and was discharged in Halifax on 

January 18, 1918. 

BAILEY, Harold WWII 

Harold was a veteran of the Second World War and served as a 

Sapper with the R.C.E. during the 1940ʼs until the end of the War. 

BAILEY, Harold KOREA 

Harold was a veteran of the Korean War and served as a Gunner with 

the 4 th R.C.H.A. and served in Korea in 1951. 



BANKS, Kenneth WWII 

Kenneth was born in Poplar Grove, PEI. He enlisted in the Royal 

Canadian Air Force as a FL/LT on December 14, 1943 and served in 

Canada. He was discharged on February 25, 1946.

BARBOUR, Roy Atwood WWII 

Roy was born in Montrose, PEI. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air 

Force with the rank of Corporal on May 20, 1941 and served in 

Canada. He was discharged on October 20, 1945. 

BARLOW, James WWII 

James was born on December 10, 1918 in Stanley Bridge, the son of 

Edward and Mary Ethel (Turner) Barlow. Jimmyʼs mother died young and 

he was sent to live with his Uncle Leander and Aunt Florrie Reid. During 

World War Two, he served as a mechanic at Camp Borden, Petawawa and 

Winnipeg. He left the Army in 1945 and worked the remainder of his life 

in Toronto, Ontario. James passed away on February 5, 2003. 

BARNETT, Ralph Lester WWII 

Ralph was born in Wells Road, Elmsdale, PEI. He enlisted on August 

21, 1941 with the rank of Corporal serving in Canada with the # 6 

District Depot (O.A.). Ralph received his discharge on November 17, 

1945. 

BARRETT, Frederick WWII 

Frederick was born in Alberton, PEI. He enlisted on January 8, 1943 

as a Gunner with the # 6 District Depot, C.A. serving in Canada, the 

UK and Continental Europe. He received his discharge on February 6, 

1946. 



BERNARD, Ernest J. KOREAN WAR 

Ernest, son of Antonin Bernard and Emma Cormier. He enlisted in the 

Army on May 6, 1950, and served with the R.C.D. and Stradacona 

Horse (R.C.E.M.E.) in Korea in 1953 for eleven months, and, in Egypt 

in 1957 for eleven months. He received his discharge from the service 

on May 6, 1960.

Bernard was born in Tignish, PEI. He enlisted in the Army as a Private 

with unit #62 C.A. (B) T.C. on October 16, 1942. He served in Canada, 

the UK and Continental Europe, and received his discharge on 

December 15, 1945. 

BERNARD, Mary Mildred WWII 

Mary was born in Tignish, PEI. She enlisted with the Army C.W.A. Corp 

on January 22, 1943 and served in Canada. Mary received her discharge 

on August 30, 1946. 

BERNARD, Valerie Joseph WWII 

Bernard was born in Tignish, PEI. He enlisted with the R.C.A.S.C. as 

a Private on August 13, 1950 and served in Canada. He received his 

discharge on March 24, 1952. 

BLACKETT, Lester WWII 

Lester was born in 1911 to Sarah and Crawford Blackett in Little Pond, 

PEI. He served in the Canadian Army during World War Two. Lester 

passed away in 2008. 



BOLGER, Joseph Ernest WWII 

Joseph was born in Stanley Bridge on October 19, 1905, the son of 

Thomas and Margaret Jane (Walsh) Bolger. He joined the Royal 

Canadian Air Force in World War Two and served at air bases as Security 

Guard and Instructor during the war. After his discharge, he was 

employed with the “George Full Produce Co.” in Hunter River, where he 

and his family resided. Joseph passed away on September 22, 1996.

BOUDREAU, Reuben Reginald “Reggie” 

BOLGER, Patrick WWII 

Patrick was born in Stanley Bridge, PEI. He joined the Army in 

February 1943, taking his basic training in Charlottetown. He was discharged 

because of his size and low weight, but was called back and 

assigned to Military Pay Corps because of his banking experience. 

Staff Sergeant Bolger continued six months after the war to assist with

CASELEY, Elmer KOREAN WAR 

Elmer was born in Spring Valley, PEI on April 29, 1929. He joined the 

Air Force in Charlottetown on April 24, 1951 and served in St. Jeanʼs, 

Quebec, Wainwright, Alberta, South Hampton Island and Northern 

Canada. Elmer contracted tuberculosis and was discharged on 

January 7, 1953. 

CLEMENTS, George W. WWII 

George was born in Elmsdale, PEI on December 8, 1924. He served 

with the Essex Scottish Regiment in Canada, France, Belgium and 

Holland from 1942-1945. George was wounded and taken prisoner in 

Holland for six months and six days. He escaped two months before 

the war ended. 

COFFIN, Kenneth WWII 

Kenneth was a veteran of the Second World War and served with the 

8 th Canadian Battery Heavy A.A.R.C.A. 

CONROY, Edison WWI Killed in Action 

Edison was a veteran of the First World War and served with the 8 th 

Canadian Siege Battery, C.G.A. Field Artillery from 1916 until he was 

killed in action at Vimy Ridge. 



CONSTABLE, Melvin Ralph WWII 

Ralph was born on PEI and joined the R.C.A.F. about 1941. He 

trained in England and was on a mission with the R.A.F. when his aircraft 

crashed on a return from the continent on September 7, 1942. 

Melvin is buried in a church-yard in England.

Alfred, the son of Belonie Cormier and Irene Gallant, enlisted in the 

Royal 22 nd Regiment on July 29, 1952. He served in Korea as a paratrooper 

in the Infantry from March 26, 1953 to April 14, 1954. He was 

discharged on March 18, 1956.

Sylvere, son of Belonie and Irene Gallant, enlisted in the Royal 22 nd 

Regiment (2 B.N.) on September 29, 1950. He served as a paratrooper 

instructor on motorcycles and tanks. He was discharged on 

December 3, 1953. 

CREED, James V. WWII 

James served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders during World 

War Two. 

DALEY, Eugene Joseph WWII 

Eugene was born in Newcastle, New Brunswick. He joined the 

R.C.A.F. in 1939, and served as an airframe mechanic in Summerside 

during World War Two. After the war, Eugene managed Agnew 

Surpass Shoe Store in Charlottetown. He passed away in 1972. 



DAWSON, Kenneth Lorne WWII 

Kenneth, son of Frank and Sarah (Ellis) Dawson was born in Polar Grove 

on June 5, 1919. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Artillery in June, 1941 

and served for some time with an anti-craft unit. Once overseas, he was 

transferred to the 5 th Canadian Armored Division with the Cape Breton 

Highland Regiment. Kenneth saw action in Belgium, Netherlands, and 

was with the Army of Occupation in Germany from 1945-46. He was discharged 

in March 1946. Kenneth passed away on January 31, 1996 and 

is buried in the Freeland Presbyterian Cemetery.

DUNN, Wilfred Louis WWII 

Wilfred was born in Roseville. He enlisted in the Army with the Nova 

Scotia Highlanders as a Private on June 19, 1940, and served in 

Canada and PEI until being discharged on May 13, 1941. 

DWAN, Joseph Gerard WWII 

Gerard was born on Fortune Road, PEI on May 5, 1921 and enlisted in 

December 1943 and again in 1948 in the R.C.N. on the High Seas as 

a Chief Petty Officer. He was discharged in 1947 and again in 1951. 

FLEMING, John Paul Rubens WWII 

Paul was born on January 21, 1915 in Stanley Bridge. He was the son 

of Dr. James and Clara (Hogan) Fleming. During World War Two, Paul 

served with the R.C.D.F. Marine Squadron and as an R.C.A.F. traffic 

controller. He later served with the R.C.M.P. He returned to PEI after 

retiring and is buried in St. Annʼs Cemetery in Hope River. He passed 

away on July 4, 2006. 

FYFE (MACDONALD), Anna WWII 

Anna was born on September 22, 1922 in Alba Station, Cape Breton, 

NS. She served with the Royal Canadian Air Force form 1940-44 on 

various Canadian air bases. She lived on the farm until it was sold to 

Gerritt Kuipers in 1996, at which time she moved back to Cape Breton. 

Anna passed away on June 16, 2002. 



FYFE, Hannah Gerritt WWI 

Hannah was born on December 23, 1870, the daughter of John and Mary 

Ann (Smith) Fyfe of Stanley Bridge. She received her Registered Nurse 

license in 1899 from Newton General Hospital and worked in Boston. She 

enlisted as a Nursing Sister for the Canadian Forces Medical Services 

during World War One. Hannah completed her duty in England and 

France. She returned to work as an Industrial Nurse with the Strathmore 

Paper Mills and retired in Charlottetown in 1943. Hannah passed away on 

January 15, 1951 and is buried in Cavendish Cemetery.

Highlanders in World War ii and served in Canada, Newfoundland and 

England and retired to farm with his wife Anna (MacDonald) Fyfe in 

Stanley Bridge. John passed away on February 10, 1966.

John, son of Edmond and Delima Gaudet, enlisted in the Royal 

Canadian Air Force in December 1939. He did his training at Toronto 

Training Depot and St. Thomas Pilot and Gunnery Training School. 

John was killed in a car accident in St. Thomas, Ontario on June 30, 

1940. 

GAUDET, Joseph F. WWII 

Joseph, son of Clovis and Jacqueline Arsenault was born in 

Wellington, PEI and joined the Navy on November 1, 1940 at H.M.C.S. 

Queen Charlotte at Charlottetown. He did his basic training on 

H.M.C.S. Stadacona from November 21, 1940 to March 31, 1941. 

Joseph was discharged on June 26, 1945.

Joseph was born in Rustico, PEI in 1886 and passed away in 1949. 

He served in France with the Canadian Army, 8 th Seige Battalion from 

April 16, 1916 to June 16, 1919. 



GAUDET, Joseph Marc WWII 

Joseph Marc, son of Clovis Gaudet and Jacqueline Arsenault, enlisted 

in the Army on December 17, 1942. He served in England and joined 

the 48 th Highlanders in the Italian Campaign at Ortona and was

Gerald was born in Murray Harbour North, PEI, on April 19, 1921, 

youngest son of Wendell and Jane Boyd Graham. He enlisted with the 

Royal Canadian Naval Regiment on May 17, 1943 as an able seaman. 

He served on H.M.C.S. Charlottetown on the High Seas and overseas 

from December 23, 1943 until October 9, 1945. Gerald passed away 

on November 15, 2001.

Highlanders early in September 1939. He served with the West Nova 

Scotia Regiment in Newfoundland, England, Italy, France, Belgium,

Thomas was born in Roseville, PEI. He enlisted in the Army as a 

Private with the Prince Edward Island Light Horse Division on 

February 25, 1943 and served in Canada, Britain and Northwest 

Europe. He received his discharge on June 21, 1946. 

KEMP, William Lindsay WWII 

William was born on June 30, 1914. He served in the Royal Canadian 

Army during World War Two. William is deceased. 

KUIPERS, Gerritt WWII 

Gerritt was born in Holland on April 23, 1928, and served in World War 

Two with the Police Corps of the Dutch Army. From there, he went to 

Indonesia and Dutch Guiana. He immigrated to Canada and then to PEI 

to help with farm work, and then bought his own farm in 1996. His home 

burned in 1991, and Gerritt was badly burned and took many months to 

recover. He was very proud to be recognized as a Canadian citizen in 

1965. He loved to sing in the church choir. Gerritt passed away on 

December 12, 1993 and is buried in Cavendish Cemetery. 

LARKIN, Stephen L. WWII 

Stephen was born on the Fortune Road, PEI on February 21, 1920 and 

enlisted as Private/Gunner with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders on 

September 2, 1939. He was wounded in Italy and was discharged on 

April 3, 1945. 



LaROSE, Edward WWII 

Edward, son of Edward Joseph and Lucille Arsenault, enlisted in 

Charlottetown in 1941. He served with the 105 th Heavy Artillery in 

Gaspe, Quebec and Shelbourne, Nova Scotia. Edward was medically 

discharged in 1944.

LEDWELL, Thomas G. WWI 

Thomas was born on Souris Line Road on January 28, 1887. He 

enlisted on July 27, 1915 with the rank of Sergeant in the 2 nd 

Canadian Siege Battery. He served in England, France and Belgium 

in the battles of the Somme and Vimy Ridge. His discharge came on 

July 31, 1919. Thomas passed away on July 20, 1973. 

LEWIS, Jerome WWII 

Jerome was born in St. Peterʼs Bay, PEI on August 28, 1920. He 

enlisted in the Canadian Army on September 1, 1939 and received his 

discharge on February 4, 1943. Jerome passed away on February 7, 

1984. 

LEWIS, Sylvester Meletius WWI Killed in Action 

Sylvester was born in Greenwich, PEI on February 12, 1882. He 

served with the 29 th Battalion British Columbia Regiment and was 

killed at Passchendaele, France on November 6, 1917. 

LIVINGSTONE, Stephen WWI & WWII 

Stephen was born in 1891 in Cardigan, PEI. He was at the Battle of 

Vimy Ridge in World War One and served in the Veterans Guard of 

Canada from 1940-1945. Stephen passed away on March 31, 1963. 



MacAULAY, Francis WWII 

Francis was a native of Souris, PEI. He fought in World War Two with 

R.C.A. from April 1941 until September 1945.

MacEWEN, Daniel Sutherland WWII 

Danny was born on July 25, 1926. He joined the Army in 1944 and 

took basic training in Aldershot, N.S. and Vernon, B.C. for Pacific 

Warfare. He returned to Aldershot for discharge. Today he lives in 

London, Ontario. 

MacEWEN, Herbert Stewart WWI 

Herbert was born in Stanley Bridge on December 25, 1898. He enlisted 

in World War One on October 4, 1915 at the age of 17 with the 

Second Siege Battery. Herbert was a Sergeant with the 105 th 

Battalion and led a platoon of soldiers on Melkein-on-Rhine in 1919. 

Herbert passed away on July 26, 1986. 

MacINNIS, James WWII Killed in Action 

James was born in Summerside, PEI on November 7, 1918. He enlisted 

in the Army in July 1938 with the PEI Highlanders then transferred 

to the North Nova Scotia Highlanders in September 1939. James 

served in England and France. He was killed in action at Buron on 

July 7, 1944. 

MacKAY, George WWI 

George was born on September 28, 1894 in Stanley Bridge, PEI, the 

son of Alexander and Marjorie (Martin) MacKay. He joined the 105 th 

Battalion and served overseas during World War One. He died of 

wounds during the war and is buried in England. George was not married. 



MacKAY, Hugh S. WWI & WWII 

Hugh was born in 1892 in Stanley Bridge, PEI, the son of Alexander 

and Marjorie (Martin) MacKay. He joined the 105 th Battalion and 

served overseas during World Wars One and Two. He was a tailor by 

trade and made clothing for the Armed Forces. While in Belgium in 

1918, he made a suit for a coupleʼs child. He and his family lived in 

Charlottetown. Hugh passed away in 1972.

MacKAY, William WWI 

William was born in Stanley Bridge on December 23, 1890, the son of 

Alexander and Marjorie (Martin) MacKay. He joined the 105 th Battalion 

and served overseas during World War One and returned to PEI with 

an English war bride and lived in Charlottetown. 

MacLEAN, S. Arthur WWII 

Arthur was born on September 3, 1921 in Breadalbane, PEI and 

served 3 years and 5 months in the Air Force earning rank of Flying 

Officer. He also served with the Royal Navy Gunnery School. Arthur 

passed away on September 20, 2005. 

MACLENNAN, Nicholas Oliver Cromwell WWI 

Nicholas was born in Prince Edward Island on August 22, 1883. He 

joined the Army on May 1, 1916, serving overseas with the 78 th 

Battalion, Manitoba Regiment. He was killed in action in Belgium, 

France on September 2, 1918, and is buried in Dury Mills British 

Cemetery in France. 

MACLEOD, Roderick WWII 

Roderick was born in the Isle of Lewis, Scotland, and emigrated to 

Calgary, Alberta, where he was in the Reserve Army. He enlisted in the 

R.C.C.S. in 1939 and was posted to Sydney, NS and St. Johnʼs, NL until 

1942. He was involved in the erecting of the “Dew,” “Mid-Canada,” and 

“Pinetree” lines of defense for attack from the North. Roderick retired 

from Service in 1946 and worked for the Canadian Marconi Company in 

Montreal. He was married to Nursing Sister E. Blanche MacRae and lived 

in Brackley, PEI until his death in 1986. 



MACLURE, William M. PEACETIME 

William was born in Montague, PEI on October 22, 1939. He served 

with the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1956-1962 in Canada and the 

Middle East (Egypt) with the U.N.E.F.

MACPHAIL, Ralph David WWII 

Ralph was born on November 28, 1920. He enlisted at age 21 and 

served with the Infantry overseas. Ralph passed away in November 

1961. 

MACPHAIL, John Angus WWII 

John was born at Argyle Shore, PEI on February 3, 1923. He enlisted 

in the Navy in July 1941 and trained on the H.M.C.S. Queen Charlotte. 

He was a wireless operator on the Corvette Louisburg, which was torpedoed 

and sank in February 1943, which ended Johnʼs short life at 

the age of 20 years. 

MACPHAIL, Merrill Rogerson WWII 

Merrill was born at Argyle Shore, PEI on November 1, 1926 and enlisted 

in October 1944. He trained in Yarmouth, NS and served in 

Aldershot and Debert. Merrill was sent to Vernon, BC in 1945. 

MACPHAIL, Woodrow WWII 

Woodrow was born at Argyle Shore, PEI on July 25, 1925. He enlisted 

in the Navy on August 5, 1943 at age 18, six months after his brother, 

John, was reported lost on board the Louisburg when it sank in the 

Mediterranean. Woodrow served on the Portage, the Peregrine and 

the Lachine, also in the Pacific. He was discharged on February 11, 

1946. Woodrow passed away on January 2, 1996.

Myles was born in Valleyfield, PEI on August 14, 1916. He served with 

the 2 nd H.A.A. Regiment 8 th Battery.

MACRAE (MACNUTT), Mary W. WWII 

Mary was born in Charlottetown, PEI. After early education, she 

entered the PEI Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1938. In 

1941, she enlisted in the R.C.A.M.C. until 1945. She served in 

Newfoundland and England. For outstanding work following an explosion 

in Lewisport, Newfoundland, she was awarded R.R.C. 1 st Class 

(Royal Red Cross). She later married Norman A. MacRae and resided 

in Wheatley River, PEI. 

MATHESON, Frank Millar WWII 

Frank was born on May 8, 1921 in Clyde River, PEI. He joined the 

Canadian Army and served in Canada and overseas. Frank passed 

away on April 2, 1996. 

MCCLOSKEY, James T. WWI & WWII 

James was born in Emyvale, PEI on August 3, 1895. He received a 

Purple Heart in World War One, serving on the front lines in Europe. 

In World War Two, he served with the Veterans Guard of Canada. 

James passed away on April 20, 1975. 

MCINNIS, Houlton WWII 

Houlton was born on April 16, 1920 in Moncton, NB. He served with 

the Royal Canadian Navy for five years on the Corvette H.M.C.S. 

Pictou in the North Atlantic. Houlton passed away in Charlottetown, 

PEI on November 14, 2006. 



MCLURE, Gordon WWII 

Gordon was born in Berlin, New Hampshire, USA on October 14, 1920. 

He was a Flight Lieutenant in the Air Force serving from February 7, 

1941 to November 1945. He served in Quebec, Bournemouth, 

England, Banff, Scotland, Yorkshire, England and Linton-on-Ouse. 

Gordon passed away on January 17, 1994.

William was the son of Dr. Roderick and Amelia Ann (McKie) McNeill 

of Stanley Bridge. He studied as a tailor with Nicholsonʼs Tailor Shop. 

He joined the Armed Forces in World War One and was killed in action. 

MILLIGAN, Charles E. WWII 

Charles was born in Milo, PEI on December 22, 1920. He served as 

Lance Corporal with the Canadian Army Princess Louise Fusiliers in 

the United Kingdom, France, Holland, Italy and Germany. He passed 

away on December 8, 1979. 

MORESIDE. (MacEwen) Anna WWII 

Anna was born on April 20, 1925. She served the Army during World 

War Two. After her discharge, she worked as a secretary. Anna lives 

in Charlottetown, PEI. 

MURPHY, Robert WWII 

Robert was born in 1913, the son of Wendall and Theresa Stevenson 

of Stanley Bridge. He was a veteran of World War Two and served in 

Europe. He personally met King George VI and Queen Elizabeth and 

the two Princesses who were playing golf at Windsor Castle. He had 

his picture taken with them. Robert worked in Stanley Bridge for a few 

years after the War ended, but later settled in Langley, British 

Columbia. He passed away in 1997. 



MURPHY, William D. WWII Killed in Action 

William served with the R.C.A. 2 nd Battery during World War Two. He 

was killed in Caen, France on July 4, 1944.

Corporal and served in the Philippines, Japan and Hong Kong. 

George was a P.O.W. in Hong Kong for three years and nineteen 

months. He passed away on July 7, 1991.

Malcolm was born on June 9, 1926 in Saint John, N.B. He served with 

the Royal Canadian Navy in the North Atlantic.

PETERS, Louis Benjamin WWII 

Louis was born in Bloomfield, PEI. He enlisted as a Private with the 

North Shore NB Regiment and North Nova Scotia Highlanders on 

September 11, 1942 serving in England, Holland, Germany and 

Canada. He received his discharge on March 2, 1946.

Roderick was born in St. Peterʼs Bay, PEI on January 21, 1927. He 

enlisted in the Canadian Army on December 8, 1944 and received his 

discharge on November 20, 1945. Roderick passed away on 

September 19, 2001. 

QUINN, Louis WWII 

Louis was born on March 29, 1920. He was the son of John and 

Emma (Turner) Quinn of Stanley Bridge. He enlisted in the Canadian 

Army, training in Amherst and Debert, NS. He served overseas in 

England, France, Germany, Holland and Belgium. 

REID, Daniel Bernard WWII 

D.B. was born on May 4, 1925 in Stanley Bridge, PEI. He enlisted in 

the Army in World War Two as a mechanic with the Tanks Corp. After 

his discharge, he had his own garage where he worked as a mechanic. 

He moved his family to Alberta in 1972. D.B. passed away on 

March 4, 1998 and is buried in Alberta. 

REID, Gladys WWII 

Gladys was born in Crapaud, P.E.I. on January 27, 1922. She joined the 

Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps as a Nursing Sister on January 2, 

1944 and was posted to Debert, N.S. for basic training, then to Cogswell 

Army Medical Hospital in Halifax for 3 ½ months. She was then sent to 

England where she nursed in #17 Canadian General Hospital #19 C.G.H., 

#24 C.G.H., and #11 C.G.H. Gladys returned to Canada in April 1946 and 

was discharged on May 23, 1946. She married Major Reid on September 

4, 1946. 



REID, Justin WWII 

Justin was born on December 28, 1921 in Stanley Bridge, PEI. He 

served in World War Two with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 

England. From 1945-1970, he served with the Canadian Army Forces 

and was stationed in Summerside, Chilliwack, BC, Germany and 

Petawawa, Ontario. Justin now resides in Renfrew, Ontario.

REID, James Norbert WWII 

James was born on May 5, 1925 in Stanley Bridge. He was the son of 

Walter and May (Cullen) Reid. He joined the Army in October 1941 

and took his basic training at Petawawa, Ontario. A bronchial condition 

prevented him from serving overseas. He was discharged in 

1946. He lived his married life in Pembroke, Toronto and Barrie, 

Ontario. James passed away on December 18, 2002. 

REID, Thomas L. WWII 

Tom was born on August 8, 1917 In Stanley Bridge, PEI. He joined the 

Canadian Army during World War Two and was stationed in Halifax. 

He was a farmer and carpenter by trade after his return and lived in 

Hope River. Tom passed away on November 14, 1999. 

REID, John Patrick WWII 

John was born on April 17, 1924 and is the son of Clarence Reid and 

Anastasia Bolger of Hope River, PEI. He joined the Army in 1943 and 

took his basic training at Beach Grove, PEI and also advanced training 

in light artillery at Eastern Passage, NS. He was discharged for 

medical reasons in 1943. 

RENNEHAN (MACEWEN), Vivian WWII 

Vivian was born on April 13, 1924. She enlisted in the Army and 

served during World War Two and now resides in Halifax, N.S. 



RENNIE, Ralph Hampton WWII 

Ralph was born in Alma, PEI. He enlisted in the Army R.C.A.S.C. 6 th 

Division Amm. Co as a Private on April 9, 1942 and served in Canada. 

He received his discharge on October 13, 1942.

Ralph was born in St. Peterʼs Bay, PEI on July 19, 1925. He enlisted 

as a Gunner in the Canadian Army in September 1943 and served in 

England, Holland and Germany. Ralph passed away on April 20, 

1987. 

SMALLWOOD, John “Jack” WWII 

John was born in Charlottetown in 1919 and joined the R.C.N.V.R. in 

1939. He served onboard H.M.C.S. Skeena, Regina and Acadia. He 

lives in Charlottetown and is a Life Member of The Legion. 

SMITH, Erskine James WWII 

Erskine was born in Campbellton, PEI. He enlisted with the rank of 

Sergeant in the Royal Canadian Air Force, Communications Squadron 

on January 24, 1940, serving in Canada until his discharge on 

September 27, 1945. He re-enlisted on June 22, 1953 and served 

until June 30, 1964. 



SMITH, Erving Matthew WWII 

Erving was born in Freeland on July 15, 1916, son of David and Annie. He 

enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army at #62 Canadian Army Basic Training 

Centre in Charlottetown on July 31, 1942. Erving served in Canada and 

was transferred overseas to the United Kingdom and on Continental 

Europe with the 11 th Battery, 12 th Canadian Field Regiment. He returned 

to Halifax, NS on December 22, 1945 and received his military discharge 

on February 6, 1946. Erving passed away on May 3, 1999.

STENBERG, Lois Olive WWII 

Lois was born at Freeland on November 30, 1904, to Ernest and Eva Hardy. 

In December 1944, she enlisted in the U.S.A.F. in New York City and served 

as a Registered Nurse at Patterson Field, Ohio in Macon, Georgia near 

Camp Wheeler, and on the General Staff of the Army Forces Regional 

Hospital at Robins Field, Georgia, headquarters of the Warner Robins Air 

Technical Services Command. Lois worked in psychiatry, providing rehabilitation 

for returned soldiers who had suffered from “shell-shock” on the firing 

line. She received her discharge in the autumn of 1945. Lois is buried 

in Freeland Presbyterian Cemetery, lot 11. 

STENBERG, William Oakee WWII 

William was born on January 2, 1908 and enlisted in September 1931 

with the United States Army Air Force serving in the Philippine Islands 

with the 28 th Bombardment Squadron until his discharge in 1934. In 

1942, he enlisted again in the U.S.A.A.F. and served with the Military 

Police at Robin s Field, Georgia until the autumn of 1945. Bill is 

buried in the Freeland Presbyterian Cemetery, lot 11. 

STIRLING, Alex Reid WWII Killed in Action 

Alex was born in Rollo Bay, PEI on October 13, 1917. He enlisted in 

September 1942 and was posted to Brockville, Ontario and commissioned 

in 1943. In March 1944, he went overseas to England on the 

“Canloan” program with the British Infantry Army Division and was part of 

the invasion on June 6, 1944, with the East Yorkshire Regiment. Alex was 

killed in action in The battle for Caen on June 28, 1944. He was commended 

in action for his gallant leadership in battle. A cross is erected in 

him in the Memorial Field in Hermanville. 

THOMPSON, John Cecil “Jack” NATO FORCES 

John was born on July 16, 1929 in Conway, PEI and enlisted in the 

R.C.A.F. in Summerside on April 16, 1951. He served with NATO 

Forces, 4 th Canadian Fighter Wing from 1953-1955. John also served 

in Manitoba and Ontario with the Marine section search and rescue 

operations. He was discharged in 1960. 



THOMPSON, John J. “Johnnie” WWII 

Johnnie was born on Cardigan Road, PEI on April 8, 1924. He enlisted 

as a Rifleman, then to Staff Sergeant with the Royal Regina Rifle 

Regiment, 3 rd Division in September 1943. Johnnie fought in England, 

France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. His discharge came in March 

1946.

Linwood was born in Long River, PEI on October 9, 1923. He served 

with the Air Force on Spotted Island, Northern Labrador building radar 

stations and also in Gagetown, New Brunswick. After the war, he 

served with the military in Nova Scotia. 

WALLACE, Ralph Earl WWII 

Ralph was born in Fortune Cove, PEI. He enlisted as a Private in the 

Army with Unit No. 6 District Depot on January 15, 1945, serving in 

Canada. He received his discharge on December 6, 1946. 

WALSH, Arthur Francis WWII 

Arthur was born on January 4, 1912, the son of Austin and Mary 

(LeClair) Walsh of Stanley Bridge, PEI. He served with the Armed 

Forces during World War Two. After returning to PEI, Arthur worked 

with the Canadian National Railways. He and his family lived in 

Charlottetown. He passed away on April 20, 1979. 

WALSH, Louis Patrick WWII 

Louis was born on December 27, 1919 in Stanley Bridge, PEI, the son

North Nova Highlanders in World War Two and also returned home 

with an English war bride. He served as a road engineer with the 

Prince Edward Island Government. Louis passed away on October 11, 

1965.

Urban was born in Stanley Bridge, PEI on August 25, 1914. He served 

in the Armed Forces during World War Two. He returned early from 

Europe because of wounds. He returned with his English war bride. 

He was a Canadian Fisheries Officer, and he and his family lived in St. 

Andrewʼs, New Brunswick.

WARD, James W. “Jim” WWII 

Jim joined the Royal Canadian Navy in Regina in 1941. He served on 

the Aircraft Carriers, Warrior, Magnificent and Bonaventure as Chief 

Petty Officer, Photographic Section. Jim served until 1965 and moved 

to PEI in the 1970ʼs. 

WEDLOCK, Daniel A. WWI 

Daniel was born on September 28, 1871, the son of John and Mary 

(Lamont) Wedlock of Stanley Bridge, PEI. He served with the 105 th 

Battalion and the 2 nd Siege Battery. These troops remained in 

Germany as security forces after World War One ended. After returning 

to Stanley Bridge, he decided to join his brother in Charlottetown 

in the automobile business. It is said that he was the first person to 

drive a car from Charlottetown to Cavendish, PEI. 

WEEKS, Melville Herbert WWII 

Melville was born on May 26, 1913 in Fredericton, PEI. He joined the 

Air Force in October 1939 in Charlottetown and served in Defoe, 

Saskatchewan, Newfoundland, Summerside, Greenwood, NS. He was 

discharged in January 1946. 

WILSON, Daryle Joseph WWII 

Daryle was born on May 26, 1920 in Southhampton, PEI and enlisted 

on September 7, 1939 as a Corporal with the PEI Highlanders and the 

North Nova Scotia Highlanders. Daryle served in Ireland, England, 

France, Belgium, Holland & Germany. He received his discharge on 

September 11, 1945. Daryle passed away on February 26, 1988.
