Did you know that… * Fairborn cross country runner Jordan Redd posted a personal best time in August in the 2010 Dog Days 5K race in Circleville? Redd, running out of the 15-16-year-old age group, finished with a PRtime of 15:27. He ran a 4:58 per mile pace. His time was good enough for second best overall. * Even Chuck Liddell gets Star- Struck?!?!? Here’s proof -- Alexandria Archer poses with UFC Champion Chuck Liddell after watching the Broadway hit “Wicked” while on the Senior Trip to NYC last spring. * The Fairborn City Schools held the twenty-third annual enshrinement for the Hall of Honor last April? The inductees were Rex E. Aukerman, Joyce Dennis, Daniel J. Florio, Martha Rockwood King, Lt. Commander Erik Neal, and Gertrude Simms Williams. Page 6 of 15 HOBY Ambassador Reports Back 6/23/10 I would like to thank each and every one of you for letting me have the opportunity in going and representing Fairborn High School at the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar. I had an amazing time there. I learned how to become a better leader as well as a better person. I can't wait to use what I learned at the seminar for the upcoming freshman during freshman focus. While at this seminar, I was a volunteer for the St. Vincent de Paul homeless shelter. We cleaned up all the trash, swept and mopped the floors, and also organized as well as alphabetized all of the bags in the storage. I made so many new friends with several students each from different high schools around Ohio, and Kentucky. We did several activities that helped us to become open and better leaders for the future. I would like to thank you again for this opportunity that you had given me this summer. It was a life changing experience and I would like to apply what I learned to better the Fairborn community. Sincerely, Kayla Hill, Sophomore Class President , 2010 HOBY Ambassador AFA Grant Helps IED Classes Design, & Build In May, Mr. Darwin “Chip” Chivers, Project Lead the Way Introduction to Engineering Design teacher at Fairborn High School, was awarded an Air Force Association scholarship for $250-which he immediately put to good use. The district received several grants for Project Lead the Way curriculum-which focuses on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and this scholarship helped to IED students working with mockup airplane wings and pneumatic systems purchased with an Air Force Association grant. create an engaging lesson. In teams of 3 or 4 students were given a scenario to design and create a simulator that could demonstrate and teach how pneumatics and hydraulics can be used to manipulate aircraft control surfaces. Before starting the students researched the three degrees of rotational freedom used to describe aircraft motion (roll, pitch and yaw) and how flaps work. Students had to describe which control surfaces were responsible for each motion, then they built a mock-up and had to make it work. During the process students explored Autodesk Inventor CAD software which allowed them to draw 3-D models and to simulate their motion. Students also had to write a pamphlet describing how motion of an aircraft is controlled. The Air Force Association grant provided 24 kits that were used for several days and classes. Students were very excited to work in a “hands-on” environment-and provided encouragement for possible careers in engineering or other aeronautical sciences. The project fostered team work and allowed students with different skill sets to contribute to the team effort. Fairborn High

Page 7 of 15 September΅ Flower of the Month: Aster Birthstone: Sapphire Did you know that… * Sophomore Steven Buckey entered his original piano composition "Anya" in the Ohio Northern University composition contest, and was awarded a full scholarship to the Ohio Northern University Summer Music Camp for this past summer? * Logan Susong and Travis Byrd (representing Baker Middle School) and Steven Buckey (representing Fairborn High School) attended the State Science Fair in May at The Ohio State University? * A dozen FHS students attended the Anthony Munoz Leadership Conference at Xavier University on October 7th? The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous collegelevel courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.8 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams. We are pleased to congratulate Fairborn High School AP Scholars: Benjamin Lorenzetti qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Tara Spacy and Jacob Wilson qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Five students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with scores of 3 or higher. The AP Scholars are Joselito Buendia, Christina Hebert, Kan Liu, Joseph Lorenzetti, and Christopher McAuley. Marines and Hawks Team Up for Tots The Marines do A LOT for Fairborn Skyhawk Athletics! They work at sporting events and concession stands and serve as workers at the annual Spring Fling. This past summer they donated weight room equipment to the athletic program. And this winter the Marines will be the primary concession workers at all of the home boys’ basketball games. Now the Marines need OUR support! The Marines will be "guest grillers" at BD's Mongolian BBQ in Beavercreek. This event will be on Thursday, October 28, 2010 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 and that takes care of a trip to the grill, all you can eat salad and soup bar, a soft drink, tax, tip, and a $5.00 donation to “Toys for Tots.” What a bargain! Plus...you get to see the Marines work their magic on the grill and sing songs!!
