… and the amazing funders! With the combination of Isabelle De Smul-Brink (Born in Africa General Coordinator) determination to incorporate the Homework Centres within the Born in Africa programme, the enormous need for these centres, dedicated tutors, motivated children and the wonderful fundraisers we have all the perfect ingredients for a successful recipe! Born in Africa has been blessed with private donations which have enabled us to implement many different activities within the programme. We would like to introduce two of the main sponsors from Holland: Bram Verwije and Chantal Van Summeren (see pictures with their children). Both recently visited the projects and they too were impressed by what they saw. “When you invest in something and you can see first hand how your hard work is paying off day after day, then your hard work is worth it,” says the couple. Bram & Chantal went to visit the class in the Crags they sponsored. Maths Challenge Holiday Programme The eagerness of the children to attend and learn as much as they can before the end of the year lead to Born in Africa running a Maths Challenge which took place during the school holidays. The 30 Crags and 45 Kranshoek Primary school learners ranging from GR4 to GR7 pupils attended the two day Maths boost programme. Who are Bram and Chantal? “We met Isabelle at the Crags Primary school in the beginning of 2000 whilst we were teachers at the school and she was the leading lady of the after care programme. It was love at first sight between us all! Love for the school but, most of all, love for the children of the Kurland Village. From that moment, we have been bound to Born in Africa. Since then we have been able to do and achieve so much together. The swimming lessons, reading classes, the container filled with education material for the Homework Centres as well as toys, blackboards, tables and chairs etc. We have assisted in building two classrooms at the Crags Primary school and we have been involved in other various projects assisting and working along side BIA. They also went to visit the homework classes. This has all been possible thanks to the wonderful assistance we receive in Europe. The primary school “De Triangle” and the high school “Maaswaal College”, both in Holland, have worked with us on fundraising projects to raise considerable funds. We are most grateful to all our friends and colleagues. This money is used to assist BIA wherever we can in aid of the Kurland children. We truly hope to continue our relationship with BIA for many years to come because we can see a difference in the lives of many children”. The event was jam packed with a variety of mathematical hurdles for the learners to take on! Fractions, times tables, rounding, weights & measures and transformations were just a few of the topics covered during the two days. The BIA team shared this knowledge with the youngsters by means of fun games and treasure hunts after attending a rotating system of 30 minute classes. Well done to all to the Wittedrift High BIA students who assisted and to all the learners who attended. Lots of improvement was achieved between the pre and post tests!
Our Tertiary stars are shining bright! Our students are at home for a short holiday and are giving back ... Our UWC student Charné Majavie who is doing her degree in Physiotherapy has completed her exams and has passed all seven subjects. Upon returning home for a well deserved break, she insisted on helping at the Maths Challenge where she was a joy to have around. Having three younger sisters of her own, she loved working with the children and managed to gain the trust of those who needed extra attention. Well done Charné, you make us proud! News from the Eden Campus front is that Candy Gadebe is one of their star students. This first year her results were excellent. Making her one of the top achievers in her class. Candy was also chosen as one of the Marshals at the Knysna Oyster Festival, which is an honor for any student. Candy with Lieve De Backer! Berna-Lee Ewertse, a second year student at Eden has spent her weeks holiday in the Born in Africa office. During the week she assisted the Born in Africa admin team with various tasks. This was to prepare her for slotting into a work environment with confidence. Keep up the good work Bernie! Shenise Stuurman, our star student from the NMMU in George has also done extremely well by passing all her subjects with high grades. Good luck to her with the second semester. As you can clearly see, Abigail Links from South Cape college is cooking up a storm in her second year of hospitality. Should she continue to whip up mouth watering meals, Aby can be assured a career as a chef at one of our local five star hotels. What is happening at Wittedrift High? Our BIA students. We our so proud of them! Well done team, you have managed to complete the first half of 2011 and with flying colors! Born in Africa now boast some of the top achievers at the “small school with the big heart”, namely Wittedrift High! Not only did they assist Born in Africa during the school holidays with the Maths Challenge, but they also all managed to pass their exams did this very well indeed. We have had so much feedback lately that these students are always impeccably dressed, that their manners towards their teachers are outstanding and that they are respected by their peers. Their involvement in netball, surfing, the school choir, athletics, rugby, tug of war, Field Band and other extra curricular activities has also ensured Born in Africa’s all round commitment to the school. Bring it on guys!
