Introduction<br />

Thank you for your interest in the above role. This document does not form part of the<br />

terms and conditions, but aims to give you more information about the role, its context<br />

and an outline of the work you could be involved with.<br />

Background to <strong>The</strong> <strong>Scout</strong> <strong>Association</strong>’s Headquarters<br />

<strong>The</strong> UK headquarters of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Scout</strong> <strong>Association</strong> is based at Gilwell Park, Chingford, London,<br />

and is operationally divided into four directorates:<br />

Outline of Role:<br />

To own and deliver the business plan relating to the development of the ‘World <strong>Scout</strong> Shop’<br />

ensuring this is fully integrated with <strong>Scout</strong> Shops Ltd (SSL) business model.<br />

To fully capitalise upon sales and marketing opportunities related to the operation of the<br />

World <strong>Scout</strong> Shop.<br />

1. PURPOSE OF THE JOB<br />

To own and deliver the business plan relating to the development of the ‘World<br />

<strong>Scout</strong> Shop’ ensuring this is fully integrated with <strong>Scout</strong> Shops Ltd (SSL) business<br />

model.<br />

To fully capitalise upon sales and marketing opportunities related to the<br />

operation of the World <strong>Scout</strong> Shop.<br />

2. DIRECTORATE/DEPARTMENTAL OVERVIEW<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Scout</strong> <strong>Association</strong> (TSA) via its trading subsidiary, <strong>Scout</strong> Shops Ltd,<br />

currently produces and sells retail product to internal and external markets,<br />

through two sub brands – <strong>Scout</strong> Shops and Outdoors.<br />

This new post, which takes account of the recent decision of World <strong>Scout</strong>ing to<br />

award the management of the World <strong>Scout</strong> retail business to World <strong>Scout</strong> Shops,<br />

makes a key contribution to <strong>Scout</strong>ing both worldwide and within the UK. <strong>The</strong> role<br />

links with the wider development and success of <strong>Scout</strong>ing, while being<br />

embedded with the retail arm of the charity.<br />

In global terms World <strong>Scout</strong>ing has the potential to market to in excess of 30m<br />

<strong>Scout</strong>s.<br />

<strong>The</strong> customer base includes National <strong>Scout</strong> Organisations and individuals who<br />

are either currently or have previously been involved with <strong>Scout</strong>ing.<br />

Ranges for World <strong>Scout</strong>ing include leisure garments, souvenirs, publications and<br />

badges.<br />

<strong>Scout</strong> Shops Ltd (SSL), a wholly owned subsidiary of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Scout</strong> <strong>Association</strong>,<br />

returns all financial surpluses to TSA to support projects to enhance the lives of<br />

many thousands of young people involved with <strong>Scout</strong>ing.<br />

With a turnover in excess of £7m in the UK, a product range of 2,000 lines, and<br />

55,000 orders processed annually and dispatched to both a wholesale and<br />

consumer customer base, the business is the fundamental component to<br />

servicing the merchandise requirements of the <strong>Scout</strong> audience.<br />

Sales<br />

• To meet annual agreed sales targets with specific focus upon achieving


sales/profit objectives relating to World <strong>Scout</strong> Business.<br />

• To support the sales office team in delivery of all company sales/profit targets<br />

relating to merchandise sales via World <strong>Scout</strong>ing channels.<br />

• In conjunction with the Business Development Manager, develop relationships<br />

with other <strong>Scout</strong> Organisations and key individuals worldwide to maximise<br />

awareness, sales and business opportunities.<br />

• To attend/represent S.S.L at external sales events overseas.<br />

• To attend World <strong>Scout</strong> Jamborees, assist in sales activities, promoting the<br />

World <strong>Scout</strong> Shops proposition and liaising with key worldwide <strong>Scout</strong> contacts.<br />

Marketing<br />

• Adopt, own and further develop the World <strong>Scout</strong> Shop marketing plan/tender<br />

response document to include the World <strong>Scout</strong> Shop including direct and<br />

wholesale sales.<br />

• Work with S.S.L, T.S.A and World <strong>Scout</strong> colleagues to further develop<br />

cohesive, timely impactful and profitable strategies for world <strong>Scout</strong><br />

merchandise development.<br />

• To deliver timely, measurable plans and initiatives to support targeted sales<br />

and profit growth.<br />

• Instigate and deliver marketing initiatives in conjunction with World <strong>Scout</strong><br />

Organisation <strong>Scout</strong> Shops and <strong>Scout</strong> <strong>Association</strong> colleagues.<br />

• To develop the World Shop Global Market Place concept within agreed<br />

timeframe and in line with the tender response document.<br />

Communication<br />

• To effectively communicate with:<br />

a) relevant internal S.S.L & TSA departments/colleagues<br />

b) World <strong>Scout</strong>ing representatives & National <strong>Scout</strong> Organisations<br />

c) the global <strong>Scout</strong>ing audience<br />

• To clearly and concisely document plans & agreements.<br />

Outcomes measured include increased awareness, growth in market share,<br />

customer satisfaction, improved return on investment and increases in sales<br />

income and profitability against agreed targets.<br />

3. QUANTITIVE DIMENSIONS OF THE JOB<br />

Budget: Worldwide start up expenditure budget £100K+. Worldwide sales plan<br />

£500K year one rising to £3.3M by year nine.<br />

Opportunity to develop business cases to request funding for future business<br />

development projects.<br />

5. OTHER INFORMATION<br />

• Fully integrating new World <strong>Scout</strong> Shop business with existing SSL business<br />

• World <strong>Scout</strong> Jamboree participation summer 2011.<br />

• Co-ordinating World <strong>Scout</strong> Shop activity.<br />

• Occasional unsocial hours working, including weekends and evenings.<br />

What’s in it for me?<br />

Annual Salary: £27,682 per annum Band and Level: Band F, Level 1<br />

Salaries are paid monthly by direct transfer on or about the 20 th of the month. Overtime<br />

is not paid although time of in lieu may be authorised.<br />

Hours of Work: 35 hours per week<br />

Location: Lancing, West Sussex<br />

6 months fixed term contract<br />

Holiday Entitlement: 23 days per year plus bank holidays. This increases after two<br />

years service to 26 days and after five years to 30 days.<br />

Probationary Period: This post is subject to a 6 month probationary period.<br />

Notice Period: 1 Month<br />

Pension<br />

For all employees, the <strong>Association</strong> has a Group Personal Pension Plan. This plan<br />

allows employees to contribute a minimum of 1.5% of their gross salary up to the


maximum allowed within HMRC limits. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Association</strong> will contribute twice the<br />

employee’s contribution, up to a maximum of 10% of gross salary.<br />

Life Assurance<br />

All employees are covered by a scheme which pays two times the basic salary in the<br />

event of death in service.<br />

Getting to and from work<br />

Interest free season ticket loan<br />

Employees may apply for a loan to assist with the purchase of a travel season ticket.<br />

<strong>The</strong> loan will be paid back monthly by automatic deduction from salary.<br />

Car parking<br />

All sites offer free car parking to employees<br />

Cycle to Work scheme<br />

This scheme is a form of salary sacrifice which enables employees to purchase a<br />

bicycle through the Government’s Cycle to Work Scheme and can save you up to 50%<br />

on the retail value (depending on the employees tax bracket).<br />

Minibus Service (Gilwell Park)<br />

A minibus service is provided which collects colleagues at 08:40 and 08:50 from<br />

Chingford Station and drops off to the same location at 17:00 hours.<br />

to 50%) on a range of restaurants across the UK. This can be purchased for<br />

approximately £30.<br />
