Just days prior to the Utah
State Road Race Championships
in Herriman, the distances for
the Men’s Category 1-2 and
Category 3 races were
increased. This generated a fair
amount of email activity following
one racer’s complaint that
this would turn the race into one
of attrition. He was right,
though most responding had no
problem with that. Indeed, most
recognized that attrition is an
integral part of many road
events.
In both races, the gentle but
deceptively draining slope from
the start/finish line of the 9 mile
race loop to the base of the short
but steep climb at the mid-point
of the loop, plus the fatigue,
heat and dry summer wind,
worked the riders over enough
that the push over the climb nar-
