CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DIVISION<br />
Property Crimes Unit<br />
The Property Crimes Unit consists <strong>of</strong> the Burglary and<br />
Larceny Detail, Pawn Shop Detail, Auto Theft Detail,<br />
Metal Theft Detail and Forgery and Fraud Detail. In<br />
2011, the Unit reviewed 15,542 reports and assigned<br />
5,976 cases to investigators.<br />
Metal Theft Detail<br />
The Metal Theft Detail is responsible for investigating<br />
all crimes involving metals. Officers routinely conduct<br />
inspections <strong>of</strong> scrap yards to ensure owners are in compliance<br />
with regulations and laws. In 2011, there were<br />
273 cases <strong>of</strong> metal thefts, many <strong>of</strong> which were attributed<br />
to outside air conditioner units and sprinkler components<br />
that were stolen and scrapped.<br />

The Forgery and Fraud Detail is responsible for investigating forgeries, scams, embezzlements, fraudulent<br />
use <strong>of</strong> credit cards and internet-related fraud cases. The detail is a member <strong>of</strong> the East Tennessee US Attorney<br />
Generals Identity Task Force and members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Knoxville</strong> Bankers Group who meet and share information.<br />
The detail was also assigned a number <strong>of</strong> Internet Crimes Complaint Center referrals from the National White<br />
Collar Crime Center (NWCC) that occurred in our jurisdiction. In 2011, the Detail received 803 cases to investigate.<br />

We are committed to a police-community partnership in providing the delivery <strong>of</strong> police<br />
services. We shall accept a leadership role in increasing community understanding <strong>of</strong><br />
