Mantas Coaches 2013 Summer
Sean Nugent
Sean started swimming with Mantas as a child and now competes at international level. He won
a silver medal for Canada in the 200 breast at the British Grand Prix in 2011 and represented
Canada at World Cup Stockholm and Berlin in 2012. Sean was qualified multiple times for the
FINA’s A Olympic qualifying time.

Ciaran McDonnell
Ciaran has been involved with BCSSA for the last 13 years. He started swimming with the
Coquitlam sharks at the age of 7 and continued to swim for the sharks for 4 years. In this
time he has competed at regionals and provincials, winning many medals and meet records.
He then wanted to further his swimming career and moved to Simon Fraser Aquatics where
he has been for the last 10 years. In which he has been able to win medals at western
Canadian championships as well as nationals. In the winter of 2010 he was invited to travel
to Montreal and train for a week with the best butterfliers in Canada. He has won multiple
NAIA All- American honors and captured school records since he began swimming at Simon
Fraser University. He will be heading into his senior season with SFU in the fall. He is
currently studying Health Sciences. He has coached for 5 years with Coquitlam sharks and
Burnaby barracudas and has had many swimmers win and break records at provincials. I
am looking forward to a successful and fun year with the mantas!

Adam Kautz
Adam has been part of the Simon Fraser University varsity swim team for the past 5 years.
He has been swimming nationally since the age of 18, with standards in 200 free, 400 free,
and 200 fly. His individual best placing at Canadian nationals is top 16. He became a
Canadian national champion in 2009 as part of a 4x200 freestyle relay at the Canadian
World Trials in Montreal. When competing for SFU, he reached All American status and
became an NAIA National Champion in 2010 when he was a part of a 4x50 freestyle relay
with David Hibberd.

David Hibberd
David has swam for SFU for the past 6 years, won SFU athlete of the year in 2011, and was
selected to represent Canada at the 2011 World university games following a 4th place
finish at world championship trials in the 50 and 100m freestyle. Set NAIA records in 100,
200 freestyle and 200 IM.

Jessica Lui
Jessica is a student at Simon Fraser University. She has been swimming with Burnaby
Mountain Mantas for the past eleven years and has participated in many meets including
eleven Regional meets and eleven Provincial meets. This is her fourth year coaching with
the Mantas.

Ron Lau
Ron has just completed his Bachelor of Science Degree at Queen's University. He started
swimming competitively with the Mantas in the year 2000 and joined year-round swimming
with SFA in 2005. He swam with the SFA until 2008 and achieved his goal to swim at Age-group
nationals along the way. When Ron arrived at University, he wanted to try something new and
joined the Varsity Waterpolo Team, being a part of it for 3 years. This is Ron's 5th summer
coaching with the Mantas.

Vincent Chung
Vincent has been swimming since he was 3 years old spending the last 10 years with BMM.
Over many summer seasons Vincent has accomplished a number of provincial podium
finishes for various relays and individual events, most notably a provincial gold for div4 50
fly in 2007. Outside of the Mantas Vincent had been involved with the Burnaby North swim
team and was part of the managing and coaching team for the two years 2009-2010. This is
his third year of coaching with Mantas.

Mabel Ng
Mabel has been swimming with the Burnaby Mountain Mantas Summer Swim Club since the
age of six. This is her fourth summer as a coach as she really enjoys working with the
younger swimmers. Being a junior coach, Mabel treasures the chance to share her love of
swimming with the younger group of swimmers in our club. The more the kids love
swimming, the more her enthusiasm for swimming grows. Throughout her swimming
career, Mabel has participated in countless regular meets, Regional meets and Provincial
meets. Mabel is really looking forward to yet another fun-packed summer with everyone!

Sisi Zhou
Sisi is currently studying International Relations at the University of British Columbia. She
has been swimming since the age of 10 but start with the Mantas in 2008. She has competed
at numerous meets including five regionals and two provincial meets. This is her first year
coaching with the Mantas but was a volunteer coach for two year prior in addition to
coaching the Burnaby North Swim Team in 2012. She is looking forward to a fun filled
summer with all the swimmers!

Junjay Liu
Junjay has been swimming with Mantas for seven years and was qualified for BCSSA
Provincial Championships for many times. Junjay started coaching mini-Mantas last year.

Bryan Cheung
Bryan has been swimming with the Mantas for 10 years, and started when he was 6 years
old. He has been to many meets, including multiple regional meets and 3 provincial meets.
He is in Grade 11, and has also swum for 4 years on the Burnaby North Swim Team. He
started coaching for the Mantas during the winter season.
