The Flying Geese are now at rest.
They were rated by the State with some of the best.
Those Flying Geese.
They dribbled, they passed, they shot with class.
They feinted, and faked, they played the fast break.
They played man to man, when the opposition was in
command.
Those Flying Geese.
The Best Ever
The Flying Geese
They pivoted, they blocked, they maneuvered, and shot.
They stole the ball whenever they could
They didn't howl when they were fouled.
They jumped with ease when they were in a squeeze.
It was amazing to see when the Geese got hot.
They would immediately stop and make the long shot.
Those Flying Geese.
They were as cunning as a fox and as agile as a cat.
Soon the opposition recognized that.
They passed the ball with the speed of sound.
You should see them Geese pull those rebounds down.
They passed so fast the Referees were aghast.
The opposition at times, were indeed out-classed.
Those Flying Geese.
The Geese had a play called one, two, three.
To play it you had to be, as slick as an eel,
and busy as a bee.
They hustled and bustled, they schemed and pressed.
They left twenty-nine opponents in a heck of a mess.
Those Flying Geese.
To win the Sectionals you must have a good team.
The Super Sectional is more than a dream.
To participate you must add all of your steam,
On the way to winning a State Title.
There is always a better team.
You scheme, you plan, you quicken your hands.
You want them ready at an instant command.
Those Flying Geese.
The Geese were anxious to dominate.
They ignored the changeable traits of Fate.
I settled for a Pansy, but I wanted a Rose.
And that is how this story goes.
Those Flying Geese.
No greater local aggregation was ever organized
Than the Hying Geese of Wethersfield High.
The parents, the students, the faculty, working
together.
They accomplished a Feat.
Their records will show they are hard to beat.
Those Flying Geese.
The Faculty: Louis U. Guthrie Sr. (U.S. copyright applied for)
Their Ambition is, ' 'To do or die" .
Their documental evidence of their accomplishments,
Proves this quotation to be no Lie.
So carry on you Flying Geese,
Your record of 29-1 is indeed a treat.
You, Flying Geese.
This year the class of '81 has added
to its list of accomplishments,
as well as adding to its list of future
goals. Starting the year with
a great homecoming, we elected
Anne Johnson and Mark Neff as our
representatives throughout the festivities
and we built the third
place float, • 'Geese Top The
Charts. •' We had a successful
magazine sale and everyone had
fun at the car wash. As the new
year rolled in and the Blizzard of
'79'bore down on us, our class and
the new freshmen provided a break
in the monotony of the cold and
snow with the midwinter, ' 'Fantasy
Island.'' We would like to
give our best wishes and thanks to
Miss Beck, our sponsor. Overall it
has been a good year and we all
hope that the rest of our high
school years are just as fulfilling.

WENONA - For the Wethersdeld Flying Geese, no victory
was ever sweeter
The Geese took another giant step down tournament trail
here Friday night by winning the Wenona Class A Sectional in
a nerve-wracking 58-54 decision over Ottawa Marquette
The win puts Wethersfield into the state's Sweet 16 for the
first time ever. And it also gives them the best record in the
slate — big school or small school — 29-0
The sectional title earns the Geese a shot at the No 1 small
school in the state. New Lennox-Providence, in the Pontiac
Supersectional Tuesday night.
• • •
Wethersfield Coach Wally Keller had an ace in the hole.
And when he played it, Marquette's Crusaders went broke.
Ronnie Reed picked up his fourth foul at the 4:29 mark of
the third quarter.
From then until 3; 13 left in the game, Reed sat next to
Keller on the bench.
"Ronnie was my insurance," said Keller in a locker room
full of hugs, whoops and hand slaps "As long as we kept any
kind of a lead I was going to keep him with me
"I told him he'd go back in with three minutes left." Keller
continued "But when we had a dead ball at 3 131 told him to
go"
In the last three minutes. Reed had two steals and a pair of
free throws that were the biggest of his career.
Fouled by Marquette's Mike Stremlau. Reed went to the
line with only two seconds left in the game and the score 56-54
Wethersfield.
The pressure was on the splendid senior as stranger things'
than two points in two seconds have happened in high school
basketball games
"I knew I was going to make them." he said later. "I would
have been letting a lot of people down if I didn't"
Reed made them both and the wild celebration was on.
But Keller said his Geese should never have been in a
position to lose the game in the final seconds.
"If Mike had been hitting like he normally does, we'd have
blown them out of the gym." said Keller
Mike Smith, Wetliersfields 6-foot-l pivotman. went into the
game with a field goal percentage of .706. But in last night's
first half he hit only one of eight shots.
"I don't think it was because I was tight or nervous or
anything like that," Smith said "I was getting bumped
around quite a bit and I guess I was waiting for the fouls to be
called instead of playing ball."
Ronnie Reed added, "It wouldn't even have been close if
Smitty had been on."
The Geese hit only 11 of 33 shots in the first half en route to
their poorest shooting night in two years.
Despite their problems, the Geese were up by two. 27-25 at
the half.
After Marquette hit the first two buckets of the second half
to take a 29-27 lead, Wethersfield ran off a 10-point spurt that
Keller called the key to the win
Drew Folsom, Darryl Bond, Smith. Bond again and Donnie
Reed all hit baskets in a 66-second span of time that brought
Wethersfield from two down, 27-29. to eight up, 37-29.
"From that point on I believe we had them intimidated."
said_ Keller. "I'm not saying we_took advantage of that
intimidation I'm just saying they were looking over their
shoulders after that."
With both Reeds on the bench much of the fourth quarter,
Wethersfield's chances took a blow when Smith fouled out at
3 42
Marquette stormed back to within one
Kevin McCormick hit a rebound basket with 42 seconds left
to pull Marquette to within 55-54 Wethersfield then tried to
put the ball on ice as Bond dribbled the Crusaders crazy.
Marquette's Jim Hoffman fouled Mike Pillen with 17
seconds left Pillen hit the first free throw but missed the
second
Al Renkosik pulled down the rebound for Marquette as the
Crusaders headed upcourt looking for the tying bucket
With Bond. Ronnie Reed and Pillen all slapping at the ball
as he neared the top of the key, Stremlau lost it to Reed and
then fouled him
With the Wenona gym rocking with noise. Reed stepped to
the line, looked to the Wethersfield cheering section, held up
his hand with the forefinger extended, and flashed a smile
• It was the biggest game of my life." said Reed. "I've been
looking forward to tonight ever since I got in high school. No
way was I going to miss those free throws."
And while the game meant a lot to Ronnie Reed, it meant a
whole lot more to Keller.
"This is absolutely the biggest win in my 23 years of
coaching." said Keller. "And, believe me I've never had a
better bunch of kids.
"This is a once-in-a-lifetime team. And nobody deserved
this win tonight more than they did "
Keller admitted last year's sectional loss to Marquette
played a big part in the victory.
"That game was uppermost in the kids' minds," he said
"We've got nothing against Marquette. We just feel we came
over here last year and played very poor basketball. We
wanted to come back and show them who we really are."
While some still say Wethersfield's success is due to a soft
schedule, cold, hard facts prove it isn't so.
Last night's win over Ottawa Marquette was Wethersfield's
fourth straight over a conference champion
In the final two games of last week's Bradford Regional,
the Geese beat both Princeville and Wyoming, co-champs of
the Blackhawk Conference.
On Tuesday night of this week they beat Roanoke-Benson,
champions of the Tn-County Conference.
And last night, they beat the champs of the Illinois Valley
Add Wethersfields win over Davenport Assumption, a cochamp
of the Mississippi Eight Conference, and that's five
wins this year over the area's finest teams
Soft schedule' Hardly
Tuesday night, .New Lennox-Providence will bring the No 1
ranking and 28-1 record into the Pontiac gym
"We want them,' said Ronnie Reed last night You don't
always get a shot at the lop team in the state And we think
we can play with them."
This year the Wethersfield A.F.S. chapter had the honor to host-Mady
Roosen as the exchange student from Belgium. Eddie Smith was our exchange
student to Germany in the summer of '78.
With the aid of our advisor Mr. Carney and officers, we were able to sponsor
the annual A.F.S. week filled with assemblies and the selling of suckers.
(School)
Living in a foreign country for a period of time seemed to be an unreachable
dream that turned out to be a reality when I was selected to be
Wethersfield's American's Abroad student last summer. I spent two months
in West Germany on the AFS program. The experiences that I shared with
my three foreign families while I was in Germany will be memories that
I'll treasure for the rest of my life.
I left for Germany on June 24, 1978 along with 168 other students who
also spent their summer in Germany. All of us had mixed emotions about
leaving our homeland and going to live in a foreign land. Some were glad
to leave, others were scared. I was both. I wanted to share my life with
others, but then again, I didn't want to leave my family here in Kewanee.
Once we arrived in Frankfort we had two days of orientation to ask any
questions we might have concerning German life style.
On June 27, 1978 I met my first family the Draxler's. We lived in a
modem new development and I managed to stay busy during my 10-day
visit. When I wasn't in school with my sister Heidi, I was either seeing the
country-side, or out with my brother Klaus, Disco Dancing. My mother
worked as a part time pharmacist, and my father is a carpenter. On July 7,
1978, I left the Draxler's and met my second family, the Brutcher's.
I spent six weeks with my second family, and during that time I went and
saw Stuttgart, Ulm, Bonn, Munich, and Ludexsburg, all of which have
certain historical background behind them. I also participated in swimming,
frisbee, badmitton, soccer, mountain climbing, bike riding, and
jogging almost every day. I also went to school for two weeks also. The
school systems in Germany are totally different from our school systems.
The schools I attended had no form of discipline.
On August 23, 1978, I left the Brutcher's to join the other students for a
4-day get-together in Bremen. It was the 25th Anniversary for AA's to
meet there before they returned home, so we got the ' 'red carpet 1 ' treatment.
We were entertained by the government of Bremen, plus we sat in a
discussion between the Free Christian Democrats, and the Christian Democrats,
two of the three political parties in Germany. On August 27, 1978,
we all came home, with memories to last us a life time.
My name is Mady Roosen and
I'm from Belgium. It's a small
country in Europe with 10 million
inhabitants. My parents employ a
hardware and I have two sisters.
One is older and works in a bureau
of navigation and the other is
younger and is in the first year of
high school.
I live here with Dr. and Mrs.
Johnson and Jacki. My dad is a
chiropractor and my mom is a
housewife. Jacki is a senior in
high school.
My first impression when I arrived
in New York was the bigness
over here. From New York on I
started thinking how it should be
to live here for a year. One of the
things that's really impressive is
that all the people or at least most
of them are more friendly than the
Belgians would be to foreigners.
In school it is pretty easy and all
the social activities helped me a
lot to make friends. I like the re -
lationship between teachers and
students. That was quite a change
for me.
My stay with my American
family helped me to know '' The
American Way of Life 1 ' at least
part of it.
I really enjoy it here as well in
my family as in school. I hope I
can come back in the future and
will never forget the friends I
made this year.
most successful years in 1978-79.
For the fourth year in a row they
won first place in the annual Hog
and a five man color guard.
The concert band made its first
appearance on January 25 when it
presented its annual Mid-Winter
band traveled to Morrison for the
Illinois High School Association
State Music Contest. On Saturday
May 19, the band presented its
thirtieth anniversary concert under
the direction of Mr. Bickhaus. In
"I'll get you for that! ! "
The 1978-79 PomPon Squad was
made up of sixteen enthusiastic
girls. After having returned from a
successful summer camp, with
trophy in hand, they began their
new season. They worked hard at
practice, two and sometimes three
days a week to perfect each routine
. They started off their season
with a skit and two performances
during skit night for Homecoming.
The remainder of the year consisted
of performances at each of
the boys' home basketball games.
The "crowd-pleasing" routine
was done to "Sweet Georgia
ovation. Congratulations to all the
girls for making this a successful
theme was • 'Geese is the Word.''
Also for the first time ever, the
This turned out to be a great success
. In April we had Honor
the secretaries, the
teachers, the janitors, and bus
drivers. At the end of the week we
had an appreciation dinner for the
teachers.
During student Council week we
had a ' 'Toga" day and T-shirt
The 1978 varsity football team
turned out to be one of the most
productive and exciting seasons
this school has seen in a decade.
This years Flying Geese provided
many thrilling moments with their
wide open offense and their tenacious
' 'Mean Green Defense.''
With only nine returning lettermen
the Geese were labeled as a rebuilding
team this season, however,
their foes found out differently.
The Geese began conference
play with a nail-biting come from
behind win over Toulon, 12-8,
before compiling a decisive
Homecoming victory over Galva,
39-6. However, the highlight of
the 1978 campaign came when the
Geese traveled to Cambridge to
play the Vikings for the conference
championship. Unfortunately,
the Geese fell short, 34-7,
and finished second in the standings.
Super season; best in history of school; winning 2nd straight regional; and
getting into the Sweet Sixteen for the 1st time ever with a sparkling 29-1 record.
This team is a group of amazing young men who loved to play basketball
and the key to their success was their team concept of the game, both defensively
and offensively.
They averaged 76.6 points per game to the opponents 53.0. With these
comments, the key word that explains this team over any of the rest was X-
Citement. We also had a great bench that helped in many ways and I am
looking forward to having another good team next year.
I am personally sad to see our present senior players leave us because of the
fun and joy that they brought to the school, the community, and to me,
This year's Goslings team produced
a record of 14 wins and 10
loses. However, their record was
quite deceiving as the Goslings
came on to win their last 5
games, which included winning
the championship of the Atkinson
Tournament. This year's team
was made up of seven sophomores
and eight freshmen.
This year's team was rewarding
to coach; even though we may not
have had a great record, I felt this
team worked hard and improved
more than any other team we
played.
