DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY The Department of Psychology at Kings County Hospital Center is comprised of the Division of Adult Psychological Services and the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychological Services. The Department's staff currently numbers 39 full-time psychologists in the Adult and Child and Adolescent Divisions. EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM The externship program is comprised of two independent tracks: Adult and Child & Adolescent. The externship periods are linked to the extern’s academic year with a minimum of two days per week (16 hours) for the Adult Track and two and ½ days per week (20 hours) for the Child & Adolescent Track. Adult Track externs may opt to add an additional ½ day for a total of 20 hours per week. All externs receive one hour of individual clinical supervision per week for their individual outpatients and one hour per week for supervision of each psychotherapy group. Child/Adolescent Externs receive at least one hour of individual supervision for their inpatient case. Additional supervision for psychological testing is arranged as needed. Externs also meet with the Director(s) of Externship Training in their respective track for one hour each week. This hour is used for didactics, extern case presentations and discussion of the externship experience. Depending on scheduling, externs may be invited to attend other didactic and continuing education presentations throughout the year. Applicants need not be residents of New York or citizens of the United States. They should be second or third year doctoral students and must have completed at least one clinical externship during their doctoral training prior to applying for externship at Kings County. Additionally, all externs must have completed at least one year-long course in cognitive and projective/personality assessment including the Rorschach Inkblot Test (Exner Comprehensive System). Applicants may apply to only one of the two tracks. Duplicate applications will not be considered for either program. Each track has its own interviewing and admissions process. In accordance with recent guidelines, Kings County Hospital Center will not consider applications postmarked or received before January 15 in agreement with the Psychology Directors of New York State (PSYDNYS). Interviews will be scheduled beginning after January 15. Externship invitations will be awarded on a rolling basis with all invitations made by March 1. ADULT TRACK Four externs are selected each year for the Adult Track. The adult track externship program requires two full days (16 hours) with the option to add ½ day depending on the extern’s schedule. Please note that Friday is a required day for the Adult Track. Externs in the Adult Track are placed in two major assignments during the year and they receive an hour of rotation-specific supervision per week. One placement is on an adult psychiatric inpatient unit where trainees will provide individual and/or group psychotherapy to patients who were admitted following an acute psychotic episode. As part of this placement, externs participate in inter-disciplinary team meetings, community meetings, staff meetings, and other relevant unit activities. The other placement is selected from a variety of outpatient clinics and services in the Departments of Behavioral Health and Medicine. The assignments are made by the Director of Externship Training, with decisions based on extern interest, training needs and supervisor availability. In addition to the two rotations, externs are required to co-lead at least one year-long psychotherapy group and treat at least two adult patients for the duration of the externship year. Externs have the option of performing diagnostic assessments and may run a second group depending on scheduling availability and other duties.
CHILD AND ADOLESCENT CLINICAL TRACK Two externs are selected each year for the Child & Adolescent Track. The Child & Adolescent track requires two and a half days and is primarily centered on the inpatient child and adolescent psychiatric services unit. There are three inpatient units: female adolescent, male adolescent, and co-ed latency aged units. Patients range from 5 years old through 17 years old. There are two rotations where externs move from one inpatient unit to another. Externs are responsible for case management of one inpatient child or adolescent at a time. This includes participation on a multidisciplinary team consisting of psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, social workers, activity therapists, and dietitians. Case responsibilities include individual and family therapy and contact with agencies and schools related to patient care. Externs also participate in community meetings and behavioral level meetings with patients on each unit. There are also opportunities for psychodiagnostic evaluations which include tests of cognitive, academic and personality functioning. Additional opportunities include co-leading inpatient groups. Other opportunities for outpatient psychotherapy can be arranged, either through the Child and Adolescent Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic or the Developmental Evaluation Clinic (DEC). Duplicate applications will not be considered for either program.
