Travelling by train on the Mid Cheshire Line – information for schools and groups Thinking about organising a trip out? Wondering where to go and how to get there? Fancy taking your group on the train but not sure how to go about it? If so then read our frequently asked questions and trip planner guide below. Frequently asked questions 1. We’re thinking of travelling by train – there will be eight of us – can we get a discount? Group travel discounts apply to groups of 10 or more - however smaller groups may benefit from other Northern Rail tickets such as DUO tickets or Rail Ranger and Rover tickets. 2. There are 10 or more in our group – can we claim the group travel discount? Yes if you meet certain criteria. 3. What are the criteria for obtaining group travel discount? The discount is subject to availability and may not be available if other groups are already booked on to the train. Groups of up to 35 in total can normally be accommodated. Tickets must be booked through the Group Travel service on 0845 1243345 as local ticket offices cannot give group discount if you turn up to buy tickets from them. Travel must be undertaken outside peak times so after 9.30am and not between 4pm and 6pm. Group travel can be booked well in advance of your planned trip but the Group Travel Service requires at least seven days notice of your intention to travel in order to process your request and send out tickets. 4. What is the discount for groups? Subject to availability and eligibility, the discount is normally 26% off standard adult and child fares. For groups of 10 or more booked through the Group Travel Service 16 and 17 year olds qualify for child fares. 5. Our group wants to travel at the weekend – does the same criteria apply as during the week? Yes, but there are no peak travel time restrictions at weekends. 6. One of our group is in a wheelchair – do we need to tell you? Yes, please tell us when you book if your group has any special needs so we can make the necessary arrangements. 7. We are a group of 10 or more travelling at short notice – can we claim a group travel discount? No – the group travel discount can only be claimed through the Group Travel Service who require seven days notice. Groups can travel on Northern services at short notice but won’t receive a group travel discount. 8. We are a group of 10 or more travelling at peak times – can we claim a group travel discount? No – discounts are only available through the Group Travel Service who will book you on to an off-peak service to avoid over-crowding.
Mid Cheshire attractions by train From Chester station Grosvenor Museum The Grosvenor Museum has Chester's biggest collection of local and international history including Roman tombstones and the world of Charles Kingsley, the famous naturalist of Victorian Chester. The Museum also has some of the finest collections in the North West – enjoy the paintings, sculpture and furniture in the Art Gallery. Visit 20 Castle Street, a town house which shows home life from the 17th century to the 1920s; including a Victorian kitchen, a Georgian drawing room, a nursery and even a fully fitted Edwardian bathroom! All groups must be pre-booked and children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. It is a living community of prayer and worship, a centre of excellence in Church Music, and plays a key role for the Christian community across Chester, the Wirral and Cheshire. The Cathedral is a truly remarkable building, with a history spanning almost two thousand years. According to legend, a prehistoric Druid temple existed on this site, which was succeeded by a Roman temple dedicated to Apollo. When Christianity became the state religion of Rome in the fourth century AD, the pagan temple may have become a Christian church. Groups are requested to book in advance and avoid service times. Please telephone Cathedral Visits on 01244 500958. Educational groups are welcome at the Cathedral but must book ahead. The Cathedral offers a variety of tours which cover areas of the National Curriculum and locally agreed RE syllabi. A variety of craft workshops are also on offer.
