Ryan Chrys plays “country<br />
the way you like it,” full<br />
of energy, great melodies and<br />
harmonies, and lyrics that draw<br />
you in with stories and characters<br />
easy to relate to. His music is a<br />
great example of using the best<br />
elements of both modern country<br />
and traditional country to create a<br />
sound that is very current without<br />
slipping into cookie-cutter formula.<br />
It’s this sound that has been generating<br />
consistent buzz and praise<br />
about Ryan’s recent recordings and<br />
performances.<br />
Ryan is releasing a new album,<br />
“A Lick and a Promise” this spring.<br />
He cut the album in Nashville last<br />
winter at the home of Troy Luketta,<br />
the drummer of Tesla. <strong>The</strong> album is<br />
coated with fiddle, lap steel, banjo,<br />
dobro, and harmony vocals. Ryan<br />
calls it “new outlaw.”<br />

Have you played the Fruita Fat<br />
Tire Festival before?<br />
Yes, and it’s one of my favorite<br />
events—great people and good<br />
clean fun. Goin’ for a bike ride,<br />
hangin’ out outside with good<br />
folks, dancin’, chewin’ on a burger<br />
or a dog, sippin’ on a cold beverage<br />
and lettin’ the music take you away.<br />
All that is summed up in one word,<br />
“Ahhhh!”<br />
but it was less boring than just saying<br />
Red Rocks and Summerfest,<br />
which is true, but even less funny<br />
than the planet remarks.<br />
Is the Denver music scene thriving<br />
these days?<br />
Like a beehive in the jungle. It’s<br />
fantastic, everybody says, “Oh,<br />
there’s this band or that band<br />
that’s next to break out!” Truth is,<br />
the scene has never stopped getting<br />
better, and it’s still getting better.<br />
It’s harder and more difficult to get<br />
noticed, and there are more crappy<br />
bands, too, but better and better<br />
at the top.<br />
Who are the top five musicians<br />
who have influenced you?<br />
Johnny Cash, Angus Young, my<br />
mom, my cousin, and, uh, Engelbert<br />
Humperdinck.<br />
Are you the type of musician who<br />
reads music? Yep, I read it with my<br />
ears.<br />
