Music—or Love—is All You Need
I sat in anticipation, waiting for
the band to take the stage last March
23 at the Avalon. Well, okay, it ‘s
not a full band; actually, it was an
awesome bluegrass duo featuring
Sam Bush and the living Bluegrass
legend Del McCoury. While this
music genre isn’t my first choice of
catgories, I was really looking forward
to a great evening of kicking
back in the front-row center seats
I’d scored.
The opening band, Stray Grass,
is a local band that has quite a following,
obvious from the crowd
response and interactions during
their set. I thought they really did
a great job and were spot-on in
their performance. At one point,
while they were covering one of
Sam Bush’s songs, Sam Bush himself
actually came out on stage and
joined the band! You could see the
joy and excitement on their faces—
here they were, jamming with one
of their musical heroes! How often
in life do we get the opportunity to
join one our heroes in life? I thought
that was super cool—and you could
tell that they were having the time
of their lives.
When Sam Bush and Del took
the stage, an acoustic duo, Sam
on the mandolin and Del sporting
his guitar, the energy in the theater
bloomed in anticipation. You
could feel the love in the room, and
I knew we were in for a great night
of music.
I felt myself drawn towards Del
McCoury as he played his guitar
flawlessly; and, even though I was
enjoying the music, i could not seem
to pull my eyes away from his face,
as he had the look of pure joy and
contentment throughout the evening,
as if he were truly the happiest
man in the world being up there
on stage
As he played along with Sam,
stopping between songs to exchange
stories about their musical careers,
funny things that had happened to
them over the years touring, people
they had met, the smile on Del’s face
was glowing, and you could tell that
the man was feeling pure bliss—you
could see even see it in his eyes. Yes,
I thought, this man has found pure
peace.
Macklemore performs sold-out show April 20 at CMU
It made me question myself. How
do I find that?” “Where can I find
that?”
I believe people spend their entire
lives on the never-ending quest,
seeking what makes them happy,
searching for something in their
lives that will give them peace and
contentment in life....
It seems people try to find that
happiness in many different ways.
Some people think that true happiness
comes from finding God and
immersing themselves in their religion;
others may think it may be
having lots of money and everything
that comes with it—the big
house, a new fancy, fast sports car
and fabulous vacations. Some say
that having a family will bring you
joy and contentment.
I personally believe that none of
the above mentioned is guaranteed
to bring a person happiness, as.
Religion is just a false sense of security
to me; and, although having all
the money in the world may bring
you material things and surely make
you “comfortable” in a sense, I can’t
see its bringing TRUE peace and
joy to your heart. It only brings the
illusion of happiness people seek.
And, yes, having a family with a
beautiful wife and lots of children
may surround you with loved ones,
but will that ultimately bring you
the contentment one seeks?
Many songs have been written on
this subject of seeking one’s heart’s
desires of a better life—be it Tracy
Chapman singing about her “Fast
Car” and the promise of escape that
it will bring her or the song from
the musical Pippin, “Corner of the
Sky,” written by Stephen Schwartz,
about a young prince on his search
for meaning and significance. There
are songs about finding love, finding
that one perfect person, such
as “Someone like You” written
and performed by Van Morrison.
It seems the subject matter can be
found in a million songs out there,
and I could go on forever referring
to them.
So, as we are on our never-ending
quest in this life to find that true
sense of belonging, that “one thing”
that brings us joy in life, try not to
worry too much, as the silly little
song that Bobby McFerrin wrote
tells us, “Don’t worry, Be Happy.”
And remember that sometimes
it is the small things in life we need
to focus on, as there are beauty
and awesome things all around us,
although sometimes we get down in
life and become blinded to it. Maybe
John Lennon was right when he
sang, “All you need is love.”
and not just in terms of my music. I want
to be respected in terms of the way that I
treat people. The way, the subjects in which
I choose to... address through my music. And
not because I’m, like, trying to make records
about them. It’s just that that’s what’s important
to me. Music is my creative outlet in
terms of expressing what is important to me,
what has importance, what has a value. And
I wanna be respected for that.”
