EDITORIAL WCPT: the experience, the ideas, the challenges GILL STOTTER PRESIDENT PHYSIOTHERAPY NEW ZEALAND It was a privilege to represent Physiotherapy New Zealand at the World Confederation for Physical Therapy Congress in Amsterdam in June. With over 5000 delegates from 105 countries, this was an exciting, diverse and multicultural experience. We had opportunities to meet new friends, share experiences and generate ideas that can change professional thinking. The Moving Physical Therapy Forward theme was promoted through complementary sessions on global health, professional issues and practice, education and research in different forums – including symposia, discussion panels, networking sessions, seminars, and over 1500 poster presentations. The main focus on global health issues highlighted that the message is similar throughout the world but we have region-specific issues and needs. Our Asia Western Pacific region is culturally diverse and geographically challenging, extending from the Middle East across to Japan and south to New Zealand, including 22 representative countries. Dr Margot Skinner has worked enthusiastically and tirelessly for our region as representative on the executive council of WCPT for the last four years. She was commended and acknowledged for her support and dedication and has been re-elected for this position. We are very proud and appreciative of her role. How are we going to manage the demands and reduce the risks associated with the ageing population and increase in chronic diseases? Physiotherapists are key to addressing this challenge. We must develop preventative strategies with an increased understanding and awareness of predictive factors. Government priorities will determine change. We can influence health policy by a clear unified message presenting solutions: physiotherapy interventions to address population health needs, enabling people to help themselves prevent or manage chronic conditions rather than create a drain on services. Such interventions must be evidencebased, supported by robust economic evaluation to demonstrate their cost effectiveness. WHO has published global recommendations on physical activity, which point out the public health dangers of sedentary behaviour. Our role in prevention, decreasing sedentary behaviour, promoting healthy exercise and being actively involved in consultation in environmental design is vital. We must understand the needs and Dr Margot Skinner risk factors of our communities, and the importance of behavioural and healthy living changes. Collaborative practice makes a difference to health outcomes. A knowledge synthesis study by a group of interprofessional health researchers, reviewing literature published between 2004 and 2009, revealed that interprofessional interventions involving physical therapists produced improvements in workplace quality, provider satisfaction, the number of students in rural placements, and recruitment of graduates to rural and underserved communities, as well as reducing costs of patient care. The research concluded that interprofessional interventions at education, practice and organisational levels can improve human health resource planning and management strategies. There were examples of this from around the globe. A couple of other international developments stand out in my mind. Patient groups in the UK are combining their efforts, speaking with the same voice, for maximum influence. The Bermuda Physiotherapy Association is working to increase public awareness of the unique value of physiotherapy, and concentrating on delivering an effective quality service. Finally I acknowledge our many members who presented at Congress and those who play an active role in representing the profession and their Special Interest Groups at an international level.
