The FortWhyte Farms program at FortWhyte Alive is truly one of
Winnipeg’s best kept secrets. Our multi-faceted social enterprise
program engages inner-city youth in our sustainable agriculture
operations, with year-round training and employment opportunities
that promote personal growth and development, provide important
life skills and, ultimately, prepare youth for a productive life beyond
the fields of FortWhyte Farms.
Since 2005, FortWhyte Farms has gone from being an open field along Sam Fabro Way
to becoming home to a truly remarkable youth development program centered around a
sustainable mixed farm. Our facilities include a 1.5 acre vegetable garden, a 40 hive apiary
and honey extracting facility, a pastured livestock operation that will see 750 chickens and
12 pigs raised this year, a 2,000 square foot passive solar greenhouse, a 250 tree fruit
orchard and a year-round chicken coop with 2 dozen heritage-breed laying hens (and a
couple of roosters of course!). This summer will see the birth of our Farm to Fork
Teaching Kitchen – yet another unique and important opportunity to provide life-skills
training to our youth participants.
Recent growth of the local food movement has prompted ever increasing numbers of people
to seek more information about where their food comes from, how far it travels and how it is
produced. FortWhyte Farms provides a downright convenient method for you to connect with
people who grow food for you. Our farm is an open operation – you can see exactly how we
do things and ask questions directly to the people who are doing the work.
Through our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, you can become an active
participant in FortWhyte Farms. By purchasing a ‘share’ of our farm’s produce, you help
us shoulder some of the risks inherent in any agricultural operation. In return, your family
receives a weekly basket of fresh vegetables, grown without the use of chemicals, directly
from our fields to your table. Last year’s CSA members received 14 weeks of vegetables
prompting one to remark, “This was the best return on investment I have ever made! My
family never experienced such a bounty.” As a mixed farm, you can also purchase a share
of our meat and honey, which includes ¼ pork (approx. 50 lbs of pastured Berkshire pork of
various cuts, 4 pasture raised chickens and 3 kg of honey). If a share sounds like too much,
you can still buy our wonderful products through our market, which takes place on Tuesdays
throughout the summer. Because our farm is a social enterprise, your investment in food for
your family, is also an investment in your community. For more details on the CSA program
and market please visit our website – www.fortwhyte.org/fortwhytefarms.
T he FortWhyte Legacy Society was created
to honor a dedicated group of supporters,
committed to securing FortWhyte Alive’s future.
Its members want to ensure that generations
to come will have the educational advantage to
address the environmental challenges of the future.
The Society is a way for donors to show their
support, enjoy the benefits of Society membership
and realize tax savings. Donors also have the
satisfaction of knowing their gifts will forever
ensure access to natural settings and facilities for
learning, health and enjoyment for our community.
“The legacy program is a wonderful
way to be able to support the values
associated with FortWhyte alive. Our
family feels very positive about leaving
a bequest and is happy to do its part to
ensure that the place we care so much
about will remain the great setting it is,
where children can learn and grow for
many decades to come.”
Manitoba Hydro & FortWhyte Alive
M anitoba Hydro is a Crown Corporation and the
province’s major energy utility. Our vision is
to be the best utility in North America with respect
to safety, rates, reliability, customer satisfaction,
and environmental leadership, and to always be
considerate of the needs of customers, employees,
and stakeholders. In the course of our decisions and
actions to provide electrical services, we endeavor
to incorporate the principles and guidelines of
sustainability in order to meet the needs of the
present without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their needs.
In keeping with our commitments toward environmental
leadership and sustainability, Manitoba Hydro has
developed and maintained a formal relationship
with FortWhyte since 1991. In the ensuing years,
FortWhyte Alive has grown from a small organization
with limited scope and programming, to be the
premier environmental education resource centre in
Manitoba with national recognition for the excellence
of its innovative programs.
The growth and success of FortWhyte Alive is a result
of the vision and dedication of the staff and Board
of Directors, along with the financial support of the
public, the corporate world, corporations, government
and the philanthropic community.
Manitoba Hydro is proud of its continuing relationship
and support of the facilities and environmental
education programming at FortWhyte Alive.
Thank you for making
Earth Day a huge success!
We welcomed close to 4000 visitors
on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, a
FortWhyte attendance record, as
well as over 250 racers
for EcoAdventure.
Families enjoyed
various activities
throughout the day and
helped celebrate Earth Day
by leaving their recyclable
items at our drop off
depots. With help from
CAA, we collected 595
litres of oil, 63 tires and
35 car batteries. We
also gathered over 85 lbs
of used batteries and cell
phones. Your contributions are
making a huge difference in keeping
our planet healthy: the 2,110 litres
of oil collected by CAA at its four sites
this year have saved a year’s supply of water
from contamination, the equivalent of healthy water for
26,375 people.
On Earth Day we launched the FWA Rain
Barrel program. Used syrup containers
donated by Coca-Cola, have been
retrofitted for use and offered for
sale as rain barrels, in support of
environmental education programs
at FortWhyte Alive. Thank you
to our FWA volunteers, and
the Coca-Cola team for a
successful barrel sale!
We would also like to thank
our new members who joined
FWA on Earth Day, as well as the
EcoAdventure racers who enjoyed a
great race in the sun!
Thank you to our sponsors who helped make this day
a success, along with our countless volunteers.
We couldn’t have done it without you!
Sunday afternoon
by Michelle eldridge
group of FortWhyte alive visitors gathers at the Bison
aRubbing a
Stone to begin a guided 60 minute tour with a
volunteer interpreter. Today’s walking tour is northbound
along the carolyn Sifton trail, exploring components of the
Tipi encampment and the Bison prairie. Visitors eagerly
hear about the interaction of First Nation peoples with their
environment as they happen upon the red willow, licorice
root, cattails, galls, bison calves, sweet grass and birds
along the way. The hour passes quickly and the children
have many questions. The final stop is the prairie Sod
House where displays of artifacts convey real-life images of
Manitoba’s first pioneers at the end of the 19th century.
While the north walk focuses on cultural history, the south
trail highlights the flora and fauna of FortWhyte. The
volunteer guide leads the adventure with a reminder that
this land was once an industrial site where clay was mined,
a testimony to the resilience of nature. From there, visitors
explore the “life cycle” of the wetlands as well as the rich
biodiversity of other habitats such as the forest and meadow.
children are taken by the wonders of cattails, coots, wood
ducks, muskrats, and turtles encountered along the ponds and
trails. Nature guarantees variety through the magic of the
seasons. in the winter, for example, a visitor is more likely
to see deer and have the thrill of identifying tracks in the
snow, while spring is the best time of year to observe over
140 species of birds that stop at FortWhyte on their migration
north. in May, canada Goose goslings abound, while autumn
brings thousands of staging geese as they migrate south. in
the summer, your interpreter might point out species of native
plants tucked along the trail, a purple gentian here and a wild
orchid there!
These are 2 o’clock walks as seen through the eyes of
Raymond currie, one of a rotation of volunteer interpreters.
On a given Sunday or holiday, you may meet Barbara
Barnett, Terry Brownlee, lynn Dupuis, Gary Franzmann, lars
Jansson, Sylvia lagasse, Tami Steffensen or Suchot Sunday.
each brings his/her own perspective and expertise to flavour
the walks such that visitors can always learn something
new. come join one of them on your next visit. You are
guaranteed an enhanced appreciation for the countless ways
you can interact with – and within – nature.
to Winnipeg when she had the opportunity to MGCC-1690-RF
join FortWhyte as a practicum student, and
later came on board to grow and expand our
tourism and corporate programs. Her days
are kept busy with facilitating team building workshops, organizing
scavenger hunts and introducing tourists to the wonders of FortWhyte.
Q. What is your favourite thing about working at FortWhyte?
I am truly blessed to work with an amazing group of people and a team
that I am proud to be a part of. Plus, where else can you work and go for
a canoe ride at lunch?
Q. What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is when I work with a group and am able to watch
them grow as a team throughout the day. I am able to meet so many
amazing people and I believe I learn just as much from them as they do
from me.
Q. What is your most memorable wildlife encounter?
I think my most memorable encounter had to be watching a mother
goose as her goslings were hatching. I just happened to be at the right
place at the right time and got to witness this amazing process from the
shell cracking to the wet goslings emerging and drying off. It was such
delicate process that I couldn’t help but be mesmerised.
