A number of subjects could set aside some<br />

sessions where the main objective of the tutorial<br />

or lecture is to cover a patient safety topic.<br />

In the fourth year there could be a lecture on<br />

medication safety as part of therapeutics, a<br />

workshop on safe drug administration, and a PBL<br />

or small group learning format where a case is<br />

discussed that demonstrates the multifactorial<br />

nature of error using a case or medication error.<br />

Work together with subject leaders to incorporate<br />

elements of patient safety into selected<br />

educational sessions. Although the main focus<br />

of the session is not a patient safety topic,<br />

elements of patient safety education are weaved<br />

into the session. For this to occur, session<br />

objectives should include an element<br />

of patient safety. See Box A.6.4 for examples.<br />

The more patient safety topics are integrated<br />

into the established curriculum, the easier<br />

it will be to incorporate the performance<br />

requirements in a meaningful way,<br />

and provide context for patient safety<br />

concepts.<br />
