Bricks by
Wienerberger
designed
for living.
Newton Lodge Farm, No Man’s Heath
Newton Lodge Farm started life as a church, later becoming a hospital
and doctor’s surgery when lepers were moved to No Man’s Heath. Finally, as
a natural progression an extension was built as a photographers studio for the
purpose of taking death mask photographs.
It was important for the owner, Mark Lovebird, to match the brick to an
existing structure and considering the age of the existing house, Mark was keen
to fi nd the original brick manufacturer. After much research he contacted Terca.
73mm Smoked Russet Sovereign Stock was chosen as a perfect match for the
existing brickwork and the result is a large family home that could be mistaken as
an old farm house full of character and charm that has been standing for years.
Mark’s Top tips:
• Don’t change your mind once
you’ve started, stick with what
you’ve decided
• Stay focused
• Break the project down into
small jobs – helps you to stay
positive as you can ‘tick off’
what’s been done
• Try not to let people visit as
they’ll only tell you how much
still needs doing!
Allesborough Cottage, Pershore
Sue Cooke had an exact idea of the house she wanted to live in
so built her own home from scratch, with a lot of help from leading brick
manufacturer, Terca.
This contemporary property features two stunning bullseye effect
windows in the kitchen and master bedroom that have been further
enhanced with Staffordshire Smooth Blues. The main build uses a
combination of Autumn Russet Sovereign Stock and Smoked Russet
Sovereign Stock bricks. These have also been creatively laid in a
herringbone pattern to form a stunning 30ft chimney.
Frequently Asked
Questions
How many bricks will I need
to build my house?
Why should I use bricks to
build my house?
How can I ensure my
brickwork looks good?
How should I store
my bricks?
How should I protect
my bricks?
How can I avoid colour
banding or patches?
How is brick blending
achieved?
Why should I use clay paving
for my landscaping?
What is the difference
between F2S2 and F1S2
designated bricks?
Successful brickwork is the result of the combination of three key
factors; good design, good materials and good workmanship, and the
following typical questions frequently asked by self-builders should
always be taken into consideration.
For normal construction (with outer wall of brickwork of a half brick –
102mm – thickness) one should allow for 60 no. bricks for every square metre
of wall area, allowing a reduction of course for door and window openings.
For garden walls, generally one brick wide, one should double this to 120 no.
bricks per square metre.
Combining durability with aesthetic appeal, the natural maintenance free
qualities of clay bricks have made them the preferred choice for building homes
over the centuries - values which are just as relevant to today’s home builder.
Although the standard of workmanship on site is the prime responsibility of
the brickwork contractor, the self-builder can exert an infl uence by keeping an
eye on work in progress and by ensuring adequate supervision is maintained.
A site reference panel is very useful in this regard.
From the moment the brick packs are delivered onto site, care should be
taken that they are handled and stored in such a way as to minimise damage.
To avoid distortion of the pack which can lead to chipping, bricks should be
off-loaded onto a level hardstanding, located as close as possible to the point
of use in order to minimise excessive handling which can result in unacceptable
levels of damage.
To reduce the risks of bricks becoming dirty before use, Terca prime
products are delivered to site in polythene wrapped packs. Once opened, these
packs should be covered with waterproof sheeting or tarpaulin to avoid the risk
of unsightly staining problems, which can occur if bricks become saturated.
One of the attractive features of natural materials such as clay bricks is
the characteristic variation in shade that inevitably occurs. However, to avoid
unsightly colour banding or patching, it is important to ensure that bricks are well
blended by the brickwork contractor by working from several packs at a time.
Although colour blending is undertaken during the manufacturing
processes we recommend mixing bricks on site, taking them from a minimum
of three packs at one time. Packs should be broken down by taking bricks
from a top corner and working diagonally towards the opposite bottom corner.
Bricks should never be taken layer by layer, either horizontally or vertically.
Clay paving is the ideal choice for a quality driveway or patio, as it not
only endures but actually improves with age. These high performance blocks
are made to withstand the rigours of everyday use and, unlike many other
products, which can rapidly deteriorate, their appearance will not fade or
diminish over time.
F2S2 bricks are fully frost-resistant with low soluble salts content and
suitable for buildings and details of severe exposure, whilst F1S2 bricks are
only suitable for moderate exposure, again with low soluble salts content. In
some situations only F2S2 bricks are suitable and using any other could mean
problems in the future. All bricks in this brochure are F2S2.
