Chamber Urging Support for Space Florida Commercial Launch Site On May 2, the Chamber led an effort of support Space Fla's request for a commercial launch site south of Oak Hill. The Volusia County Council approved a resolution of support by a 6-1 vote (Jason Davis, Joyce Cusack, Doug Daniels, Deb Denys, Pat Patterson, Josh Wagner voted YES/Pat Northey voted NO). The Chamber would like to thank the business people that cared enough to attend this meeting and support the project. Space Florida, a state-run economic development agency, is seeking to acquire a 150 acre site from NASA in southern Volusia as a site for a vertical launch spaceport. In the meantime, NASA agreed to let the Federal Aviation Administration lead an environmental impact study on its land. Space Florida’s Dale Ketcham stated, "This is a signal to the commercial marketplace that Florida is still in the game." As for the launch pad itself, cost estimates appear to be less than $100 million, with the bulk of that cost being borne by the company that uses it, along with some state funding. NO VOLUSIA TAX DOLLARS! Commercial space launches are an emerging market and spaceports have been or are getting established in New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Georgia and other states which see the potential for new business from industry leaders SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, Blue Origin and Stratolaunch. These new spaceports are in direct competition with our own Space Florida, but having Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (and their new Commercial Space Management curriculum) in the same county is a plus! Timing for this project is critical because SpaceX will soon announce the location of its newest launch pad, and Florida must show signs of progress if it hopes to beat competitors such as Texas and Puerto Rico. On June 18-19, Chamber representatives including County Councilmember Deb Denys, Chamber Vice Chair Rose Ann Tornatore, ERAU’s Rodney Cruise and Marc Bernier, and TEAM Volusia’s Stephen Lawrence are going to Washington to relay Volusia's support for this project to Senators Bill Nelson, Marco Rubio, Congressman Ron Desantis, Congressman John Mica, Congressman Bill Posey. Other meetings will be held with Federal Aviation Administration and NASA. Afterwards, the Chamber will concentrate on raising public support for the project at the upcoming public hearings later this summer as required by the Environmental Impact Study. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Oceanside Country Club, 75 N. Halifax Drive, Ormond Beach, and Chamber of Commerce members are invited to attend. For reservation information, contact David Castagnacci: 386-257-4169 or dave@daytonachamber.com VCARD’s new Officers and Executive Council members for 2013-2014 will be installed at the event and the association will honor three community leaders for their contributions to the association and Volusia and Flagler counties. Robert A. Merrell III, partner in the Daytona Beach law firm of Cobb Cole, will receive VCARD’s 2013 ‘Fred Thellman Member of the Year’ award. (The award is named in memory of longtime business and community leader Fred Thellman). Honored as VCARD’s 2013 ‘Citizens of the Year’ will be Mary Swiderski, executive director of the Volusia Council of Governments (VCOG) and the Volusia League of Cities (VLOC); and Helga van Eckert, executive director of Flagler County’s Department of Economic Opportunity. The evening program’s guest presenter will be Dana Ste. Claire, director of Heritage Tourism & Historic Preservation for the City of St. Augustine. One of the state’s most highly-esteemed historians, Mr. Ste. Claire has authored publications about Florida history and also served on numerous boards and organizations associated with Florida’s history and culture – including the Secretary of State’s Historic Preservation Advisory Council. Mr. Ste. Clair also is a lead coordinator for three years of special events commemorating St. Augustine’s 450th anniversary in 2015, making it the oldest continually occupied European settlement in the United States. 13
