ESOL Conversion Program<br />

Program Goals<br />

The goals of the ESOL Conversion Program are to prepare the<br />

candidate to bring to K-12 classrooms the knowledge, skills, expertise,<br />

innovation, and enthusiasm necessary to succeed as a teacher; to ensure<br />

the candidate is afforded opportunities for observation, exploration, and<br />

reflection both in and outside the classroom; to apply his/her content<br />

expertise and pedagogical principles in the assessment of learning in a<br />

practicum or student teaching experience working with English language<br />

learners.<br />

Candidates in this program can expect to learn through integrated<br />

fieldwork and courses in the following areas:<br />

* If a candidate does not complete the portfolio by the end of the student<br />

teaching semester, he/she will enroll in TECP 92: The Teaching Portfolio<br />

(1 credit seminar) to complete the portfolio.<br />

After successful completion of the program, candidates are<br />

recommended to the NH State Department of Education - Bureau of<br />

Credentialing for ESOL K-12 certification.<br />

Financial Aid is pending for this program.<br />

Specific Admission Requirements<br />

1. Candidates may already hold a teaching certification or have the<br />

minimum of a baccalaureate degree in English and/or a degree with<br />

a strong Liberal Arts background.<br />

2. Candidates must demonstrate the mastery of all competencies<br />

required by the program through the successful completion of<br />

coursework, field work, practicum or student teaching, and portfolio<br />

development.<br />

3. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of human growth and<br />

developments or take the <strong>NHTI</strong> course.<br />

3. Candidates must successfully pass the PRAXIS I (PPST) tests before<br />

full acceptance into the TECP. In addition, the candidate must<br />

maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least a 2.75.<br />

4. A criminal record check will be required for working in the schools.<br />

During the interview, the Director of the Conversion Programs will<br />

discuss the requirements for Highly Qualified Teacher (HQT) with<br />

regard to ESOL teachers.<br />

Career and Technical Education Alternative Certification<br />

This program is designed to offer students the knowledge and skills<br />

required by the New Hampshire Department of Education standards<br />

for career and technical educator certification. This program has been<br />

constructed according to the competencies required for Ed 610.01<br />

Professional Education and Ed 507.02 Teachers of Career and Technical<br />

Education. Ed 610.01 competencies are met through courses ED 104 and<br />

ED 105. Ed 507.02 competencies, as proposed, are met through ED 230<br />

Essentials of Career and Technical Curriculum and Instruction.<br />

The program is designed to allow students to use program credits<br />

toward an Associate in Arts in Teacher Preparation or Associate degree<br />

in a general studies or career and technical program. Students also may<br />

use the credits toward a Bachelor’s degree program in Education through<br />

Plymouth State University. Articulation with other colleges and programs<br />

may be sought.<br />

Students accepted into this program may provide evidence that they<br />

may be eligible to receive credit for courses via aggregate educational<br />

experience and/or occupational experiences. In such cases students may<br />

be eligible to earn credit by examination or transfer credit, according to<br />

the policies and procedures of the college.<br />

Students eligible for this program may be:<br />

• those with a high school diploma or equivalent and significant<br />

work/life experience who would like to earn a credential to teach<br />

or a credential to teach and college credits toward Associate or<br />

Baccalaureate Degree completion;<br />

• those with some college courses or an Associate Degree and<br />

significant work/life experience who would like to earn a<br />

credential to teach or a credential to teach and college credits<br />

toward Associate or Baccalaureate Degree completion;<br />

• those with a Bachelor’s Degree (but no certification) and<br />

significant work/life experience who would like to earn a<br />

credential to teach or a credential to teach and possible graduate<br />

credits toward Master’s Degree completion.<br />

In all cases, prospective career and technical educators will possess<br />

significant life/work experience or academic preparation in a career and<br />

technical content area. The Career and Technical Center Directors and<br />

School Districts will retain the authority to review the eligibility of all<br />

prospective career and technical educators and define any or all of the<br />

certificate component courses to be required for credentialing, on an<br />

individual basis. These individuals will then be referred to <strong>NHTI</strong> for course<br />
