We would like to extend our gratitude to the Inspector General of Prisons, Orissa for granting us
permission to visit the prisons, interview the staff and prisoners, and obtain relevant official
documents for this study. Although it was difficult to gather all the information, we did succeed in
getting substantial data from the prison staff and prisoners, who so willingly shared their experiences
with us.
We would also like to thank Mr. Nilambar, our consultant in Orissa who helped in the collection
of data and accompanied the researcher on her various trips to the prisons.
