program news LifeSupport Family Enrichment Program fills gaps This September, CCA provided a much-needed laptop to 17-yearold Braydon from Vancouver, WA. Braydon’s leukemia has left him legally blind and he required a computer to use special software that will read aloud to him and magnify text. “Braydon is thankful for the outpouring of support: it reminds him to keep going,” says his grandmother. The LifeSupport Family Enrichment program provides compassion and assistance to families battling a life-threatening illness and in financial crisis with essential needs, wish fulfillment, bilingual services and holiday support. Trips to the Hospital Are a Little More Fun, Thanks to Chemo Pal ® mentors CCA has brought the power of friendship to 56 new children and teens undergoing chemotherapy since January 2008, including Chemo Pal Krystal and 4-year-old Chelsea. Says Chelsea’s mom, “Chelsea and Krystal are the perfect match! They are inseparable when together and get along really well. Chelsea really looks forward to Krystal’s visits, and Krystal is always really positive and fun. We love her!” The Chemo Pal program matches adult mentors with children and teens battling cancer, providing the child with a special friend. Caring Cabin Brings comfort and respite CCA’s Caring Cabin is a one-of-a-kind retreat home offered at no cost to families whose child faces cancer or terminal illness as an escape from the overwhelming challenges and chaos of treatments and surgeries. “This special place has brought laughter and happiness. The beauty and the magic of it are endless and the memories we made here are unforgettable,” says the Jenkins family whose five-year-old daughter Madisyn is battling leukemia. You can help by sponsoring a family for a weekend at the cabin CCA’s Caring Cabin on the Oregon Coast or by making a contribution toward the costs of monthly utilities, food pantry, gas cards and more. Music Rx ® Fills the Hospitals with Joyful sounds Designed by Nike and Herman Miller, the new state-of-the-art Music Rx® music carts are in place, and the Music Rx program is in full swing. Certified staff and volunteers continue to bring the soothing joy of music to hospitalized children and teens in 17 children’s units at six healthcare facilities in Oregon and Southwest Washington: Legacy Emanuel and Doernbecher Children’s Hospitals, Providence Center for Medically Fragile Children, Legacy Salmon Creek, CARES Northwest, Oregon Burn Center and Shriners Portland.
