The Korean Terms and their English meaning found in this dictionary are related to
the practice of Soo Bahk Do. Simple phonetic spelling for the English speaking reader
was utilized. Vowels used in the Korean Terms are to be pronounced as shown below:
"A" as in Father - "Ah" will be used to assist the reader.
"E" as in Get - "Eh" will be used to assist the reader.
"Ee" as in Easy - Sometimes used instead of " I ".
"I" as in Ink - Sometimes used instead of "ee".
"O" as in Open - "Oh" will be used to assist the reader.
"Oo" as in Food Wee instead of Oee & Oi
"U" as in Hut - "Uh" will be used to assist the reader.
Consonants in the Korean Language are pronounced in a variety of ways depending
upon whether they are at the beginning, middle or end of the word and sometimes change
because of the word following it. I have attempted to make the necessary adjustments.
For example: The "k" is pronounced as "n" in "Yuk Ryo". I have taken the liberty of
adding or changing letters in most of the Korean words so that they might be pronounced
correctly. There are a variety of choices between one or other consonants shown below
but the most common choice is used in this dictionary:
Ch or J as in Choose or Juice (Korean: Choon Bee or Jindo)
D or T as in Dakota or Talk (Korean: Dan or Tando)
G or K as in Go or Key (Korean: Gup or Kee)
H, Hw or F as in Hoogul P or B as in Passai R or L as in LoHai
S as in Sahm Sh as in Shilla
Neh instead of Nae, Ne, Nei or Nay Weh instead of Wae, Oe, Wei or Way
The following format is used throughout this material:
Korean Words [additional phonetic method] meaning "literal meaning" (additional
information)
I trust that this dictionary will be helpful in pronouncing and understanding Korean
Terminology as it is used in the practice of Soo Bahk Do.
