A Message from Head of <strong>School</strong> 

Marcella Yedid 

With end-of-year musings, one’s thoughts can take multiple directions. With 2011 – 2012 closed, I keep returning to <strong>Key</strong>’s 

historic trajectory and to the theme of a school for its times. Fifty-four years ago, the nascent <strong>Key</strong> <strong>School</strong> with its eighteen 

students positioned itself on the cutting edge of practice with its whole-hearted adherence to the tenets of progressive 

education. A student-centered philosophy, advocated and applied by three entrepreneurial school founders, provided fertile 

ground for the development of experiences from which students could discover and interpret the 

world around them. Today, <strong>Key</strong>’s educational philosophy is more than ever grounded in these 

principles; yet, that firm grounding is not an obstacle to consideration of new pedagogical ideas 

and to the use of contemporary teaching tools. Such a sought-after equilibrium between tradition 

and innovation is aptly stated in a newly-published work by Columbia University Professor David 

Hansen. “A cosmopolitan orientation places one at the crossroads of reflective loyalty to the known 

and reflective openness to the new.” This intersection, in my mind, has been adroitly navigated at 

<strong>Key</strong> throughout these past twelve months as we have reflected on, as well as practiced, the art and 

science of teaching. 

On the innovative fronts, we can cite the progress our faculty has made in furthering the 

meaningful insertion of technological tools as our students complete research, conduct 

experiments, pursue their creative ideas, connect with students nationally and globally, and discern the judgment calls that good 

digital citizenship demands. We can also take pride in furthered faculty knowledge garnered from new brain research to which 

we are regularly introduced, and to the possibilities that such knowledge extends as we reinforce student strengths while also 

providing assistive mechanisms to address weaknesses. Furthermore, innovative thinking has preoccupied <strong>Key</strong> <strong>School</strong> trustees as 

they have envisioned the <strong>Key</strong> <strong>School</strong> of 2020 and sought to create a road map for continued school vitality, whether manifest in 

financial stability, in continued favorable positioning in the recruitment and retention of the finest faculty and staff for today’s 

and tomorrow’s students, in programmatic amplitude and excellence, and in facilities improvements intended to enhance the 

student experience in the arts, athletics and environmental education. 

But let us not forget our loyalty to the known. We can be proud of our pursuit of long-held traditions: honoring the 

student voice; inculcating in the young the inter-connectedness of human knowledge through an interdisciplinary teaching 

approach; pursuing a strong sense of community about which so many remark and to which they are drawn; recommitting to 

diversity objectives that so enrich our community and lead us to deeper understandings of one another; and reconfirming our 

belief that at the heart of the educational experience is the capacity we give each young person to become an enthusiastic 

life-long learner. 

With these reflections come concrete yet disparate images of highlights of the year: a moving fall dedication of <strong>Key</strong>’s 

Greenhouse in which we not only celebrated the presence of a highly desirable campus addition for student inquiry but also the 

long tenure of a dedicated administrator, Mary Jane Milner; a riotous spring Upper <strong>School</strong> musical spoof, depicting a school 

with totally antithetical values to those we espouse, reminding us of our appreciation for our educational progressivism; Mother 

Nature’s force as we confronted the effects of an August earthquake and yet another hurricane; a presentation for parents 

focusing on the scientific method in which our own Lower, Middle and Upper <strong>School</strong> students demonstrated the sophistication 

with which scientific inquiry is fostered and applied; and, not to be forgotten, the farewells we are saying to four <strong>Key</strong> <strong>School</strong> 

retirees, Cathy Clark, Janet Favero, Bettze Libson, and Sharon Pehle, whose combined years of service almost reaches the 

century mark. 

For all these memories and accomplishments, I thank my colleagues for their steadfast commitment to our mission 

and students, the <strong>Key</strong> parent community for its continued confidence in the distinctive educational experience we extend to 

their children, and all <strong>Key</strong> supporters who make our endeavors possible. “A school for its time” is an appropriate depiction of 

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Key</strong> <strong>School</strong> of 1958 and of 2012. I am confident that this framing shall also be accurate if stated as “a school for all times.”

Greetings <strong>Key</strong> Community! 

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Key</strong> <strong>School</strong> Board of Trustees is a group of parents, past parents and alumni who are committed to preserving the health 

and mission of the <strong>School</strong> in perpetuity. I’m happy to have this opportunity to report, on behalf of these dedicated trustees, 

that our 2011 – 2012 year was very successful in both preserving the robust financial health of the <strong>School</strong> as well as making 

progress toward our vision for the future. 

“We continue to challenge the <strong>Key</strong> community to greater levels of involvement. 

I’m happy to report that we witnessed a high level of support in new initiatives from 

veteran volunteers and new families alike.” 

We again began the year with a great deal of optimism and energetic focus on increasing 

community participation. <strong>The</strong>re was a significant focus on educating parents on the finances of 

the <strong>School</strong>—the operating budget and annual fund, as well as the state of our <strong>School</strong>’s endowment 

and capital needs. As you’ve read from me several times over these past few years, it takes the 

whole village participating in the endeavors of the <strong>School</strong> for it to thrive, and this last year was 

no exception. We continue to challenge the <strong>Key</strong> community to greater levels of involvement. I’m 

happy to report that we witnessed a high level of support in new initiatives from veteran volunteers 

and new families alike. Happily, a great many of you in the <strong>Key</strong> community accepted the challenge 

and I heard back from you every week how you were personally experiencing your own rewards 

while making a real difference in the experience our children are enjoying at <strong>Key</strong>. To all benefactors and volunteers, you should 

all be very proud of what you accomplished this year and again, on behalf of the <strong>Key</strong> Board of Trustees, I thank you for your 

amazing support and confidence in the <strong>School</strong>. 

A big part of the work of the Trustees is focusing on long term goals. This year the centerpiece of that effort was the 

project to acquire a large parcel of land in the nearby community of Annapolis Roads. <strong>The</strong> <strong>School</strong> intends to use this property 

primarily as space for our after school sports programs. This property, nearly 70 acres of beautiful rolling fields, has the promise 

of nothing less than changing the legacy of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Key</strong> <strong>School</strong>. Our Board of Trustees and the <strong>School</strong>’s benefactors continue to 

enthusiastically support this acquisition while our Buildings & Grounds Committee has put in long, hard months of work to 

make this purchase a reality for <strong>Key</strong>. We’ll have many more details to share about these exciting plans in the coming year. 

We are delighted to be welcoming three new trustees to the <strong>Key</strong> Board for the 2012 – 2013 year: Alanna Wright, Larry 

Kast and Kitou Futrell. It’s with great enthusiasm that we welcome these talented and energetic new faces to our board work. 

All of these individuals have already made a considerable positive impact on <strong>Key</strong>. <strong>The</strong>ir participation on our Board of Trustees 

is a continuing commitment for each of them to leave the <strong>School</strong> a better place than they found it. 

We also take this opportunity to honor and thank three members of our <strong>Key</strong> community who have served with 

exemplary dedication and valuable insight. Leaving <strong>Key</strong> board service this year were 

Randi Altschuler, Elizabeth Buckman, Ros Calvin and Justin Cuniff ‘98. Randi and Ros 

have accepted permanent staff positions at <strong>Key</strong>, and all four past trustees remain actively 

engaged in the stewardship of the <strong>School</strong>. 

Now entering my third year as <strong>Key</strong>’s Board President, I continue to feel honored 

and very blessed to work with our Head of <strong>School</strong>, Marcella Yedid, the Board of 

Trustees, the faculty and staff, and the whole <strong>Key</strong> community in continuing stewardship 

of the premier independent school choice in our region.

Since 2003, the growth of the <strong>School</strong>’s Endowment has been one of <strong>Key</strong>’s 

highest fundraising priorities. Today, the current value of the Endowment

Answering the call for a more robust Endowment that would secure <strong>Key</strong>’s 

future, individuals and families began their support of this fund with gifts 

and pledges ranging from $1,000 to $1,000,000. 

Additionally, many donors also generously supported <strong>Key</strong>’s most 

recent Capital Projects, including the renovation of the Barn, land 

acquisition and support for the planning of a Fine and Performing Arts 

Center. We thank donors for these gifts that help fund initiatives in 

support of <strong>Key</strong>’s 2020 Vision.

PROFILE 

Patricia Edwards 

“I knew these boys were going to need good 

teachers,” said Pat Edwards, explaining one of the 

reasons why she and her husband Arthur chose <strong>The</strong> 

<strong>Key</strong> <strong>School</strong> for her sons when the family initially 

moved to Annapolis. 

“I felt very much at home,” Pat said, about her 

first visit to <strong>Key</strong>. 

That was in 1973, and now four decades later, Pat watches 

as another generation of family members attend <strong>Key</strong>— 

she currently has three grandchildren enrolled and one 

granddaughter who has already graduated. 

Being an integral part of the <strong>Key</strong> community has played an 

important role in Pat’s life—from those early years heading the 

Parent League (as the Parents’ Association was then known) and 

developing the very first <strong>Key</strong> <strong>School</strong> cookbook, <strong>Key</strong> Cookery, to 

today, as she continues to help the <strong>School</strong> prosper. 

“I had the time of my life,” said Pat, as she looks back. 

“<strong>The</strong> parents—we were all volunteers, we all had a great time 

together, and we really accomplished a lot in those times. Great 

friendships were made…it was really a bonding experience.” 

Still very active in the <strong>Key</strong> community, Pat said one of 

her favorite aspects of visiting the <strong>School</strong> is watching the 

interactions between the younger and older students—a benefit 

of a campus comprising students from pre-school through upper 

school. 

“No man is an island,” she said, explaining much can 

be learned from such exposure, with both younger and older 

students benefiting from one another. 

“It’s an integral part of their education,” she said. 

Pat feels the <strong>School</strong>’s focus on the arts is another benefit of a 

<strong>Key</strong> <strong>School</strong> education—an area near and dear to her heart. 

“Of course, I loved that they had music every day—I 

loved that they potted and painted,” she explained. “I’ve always

believed in the arts and felt it was essential every day that my 

children worked in the arts.” 

Pat also believed in the philosophy at the core of <strong>Key</strong>’s 

athletic program. “Every child could play; they didn’t have to 

be the best,” Pat offered. “I believed in that, too—every child 

could participate.” 

Pat’s benevolence to her community goes beyond <strong>The</strong> <strong>Key</strong> 

<strong>School</strong>. She is a patron of the arts and a long-time supporter 

of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. She enjoys cooking, 

traveling, reading, gardening, and spending time with her 

family. When asked about her favorite books and movies, Pat 

didn’t have to think long. Out of Africa, she said. 

While <strong>The</strong> <strong>Key</strong> <strong>School</strong> is extremely saddened by the loss 

of Arthur Edwards, we are ever so grateful for Arthur’s and 

Pat’s unwavering commitment to the <strong>School</strong> for the past four 

decades.

Participating in the <strong>Annual</strong> Fund strengthens 

our <strong>School</strong>, supports our wonderful Faculty 

and our distinctive Program! 

Your <strong>Annual</strong> Fund gift helps support new and ongoing 

initiatives and projects. Below are some of the highlights of 

<strong>Key</strong>’s <strong>Annual</strong> Fund for the 2011 – 2012 academic year: 

In 2011 – 2012, about $41,500 allowed each of <strong>Key</strong>’s three libraries to maintain 

and enhance the materials students use in support of their academic programs. In addition, 

$151,500 was spent on teaching technologies serving all disciplines from math and science to humanities 

and languages. <strong>The</strong>se included SMART Boards in classrooms, iPads, 80 upgraded computers, a mounted LCD projector within 

the Activity Building, digital cameras, document cameras, and laptop carts for classroom and library use as well as for <strong>Key</strong>’s 

media literacy and digital citizenship programs. 

With $30,300 and $21,300 respectively earmarked for Middle and Upper <strong>School</strong> educational field trips, and $58,500 for 

the Middle and Upper <strong>School</strong> Outdoor Education Program, <strong>Key</strong> ensured that students were afforded unique opportunities 

to build their leadership skills and confidence, hone their understanding of the world around them, and strengthen their sense 

of community. 

<strong>Key</strong> invested about $100,700 in athletics in 2011 – 2012 to provide our scholar athletes with top-notch coaches, team 

transportation, uniforms and equipment. <strong>Key</strong> offers a competitive and inclusive program, with 45 Middle and 

Upper <strong>School</strong> teams representing 15 sports. 

<strong>Key</strong> offers a vibrant fine and performing arts program capturing the attention of the entire community through its 

school-wide art shows, theatrical productions, musical performances, and instrumental activities. <strong>Key</strong>’s world-renowned 

Orff Schulwerk program is supported by six teachers who work to offer students, from the earliest grades through 

Middle <strong>School</strong>, musical instruction. 

<strong>The</strong> Professional Development of the faculty is at the heart of <strong>Key</strong>’s commitment to its students. Faculty participate in 

workshops focusing on diversity, differentiated instructional techniques, and technology training to keep them in the forefront of 

the most up-to-date teaching tools. Furthermore, <strong>Key</strong>’s focus on fostering global perspectives is exemplified by the partnership 

between <strong>Key</strong> <strong>School</strong>, Somers Park in England, and Chumbageni <strong>School</strong> in Tanzania. In 2011 – 2012, a total of $145,145 was 

dedicated to Professional Development, representing a little over 1% of the budget. 

In 2011 – 2012, <strong>Key</strong> provided close to $1.7 million in assistance to 25% of our students whose families qualified for need-based 

financial aid. <strong>Key</strong> needs a strong financial aid program to remain accessible to exceptional students who contribute to the 

vitality of the <strong>School</strong> and who would otherwise not be able to attend. 

<strong>Key</strong>’s natural and serene outdoor spaces continue to be preserved and enhanced through investment in our plant. 

Improved walkways lead from building to building winding past playgrounds, gardens, Gazebos and outdoor 

classroom spaces. <strong>The</strong>se grounds and facilities require attention to continue to best serve 

the educational needs of our students. Some $260,000 was set aside 

for our campus upkeep and beautification program. 

Excellence and quality are expensive; the largest item in <strong>Key</strong>’s 

budget funds faculty/staff salaries and benefits. We believe that is 

as it should be, investing 71% of <strong>Key</strong>’s income in the people who 

make your children’s education possible.

Each year, the <strong>Annual</strong> Fund generates needed income through charitable 

gifts from all corners of the <strong>Key</strong> community. <strong>The</strong>se gifts support the 

current operating budget and enhance the day-to-day life of every 

student and faculty member. <strong>Annual</strong> Fund monies are raised and spent in 

the same fiscal year. 

Contributions to the <strong>Annual</strong> Fund provide necessary funding to 

support <strong>Key</strong>’s exceptional academic programs, as well as co-curricular

PROFILE 


Having graduated from <strong>Key</strong> in 2006, Troy Mayer 

said the <strong>School</strong> was a perfect fit for him when he 

started as a freshman. 

“I was looking for a school that would challenge 

me academically, offer more opportunities to be 

involved in a diverse group of activities, and provide 

a platform for me to develop my own ideas and 

opinions,” he said. “I really found that at <strong>Key</strong>.” 

From his involvement in sports activities—including running 

cross country—to participating in Model Congress, to sitting on 

the Building and Grounds Committee of the Board of Trustees, 

Troy enjoyed an array of experiences while a student at <strong>Key</strong>. 

“<strong>The</strong>y really let you in and encouraged you to be a part of the 

school,” he said. 

Still very much a part of <strong>Key</strong>, Troy continues to share his 

talents and resources with the <strong>School</strong>: he is a generous donor, 

serves on the Board of Trustees, and works to strengthen 

alumni programs through his involvement with <strong>Key</strong>’s Alumni 

Advisory Council. 

For Troy, giving back is his way of showing his appreciation 

for how well <strong>Key</strong> prepared him for the real world. He wants 

to ensure that others have the benefit of what the <strong>School</strong> 

gave to him. 

“I’m involved with <strong>Key</strong> because the <strong>School</strong> not only provided 

fundamental skill sets for my life, but helped instill in me the 

vision to think big, the drive to ask the tough questions, and the 

confidence to express my own opinions,” Troy explained. 

“It is not that <strong>Key</strong> followed a script for a one-size-fits-all 

approach, it’s that it didn’t—instead it fostered out-of-the-box, 

independent, critical thinking. I think it stems from discussionbased 

classes, the collaborative learning and the faculty 

supporting you in new ventures and providing ideas that had 

you thinking critically about sharing opinions,” Troy said. 

Troy Mayer (pictured here with his mother Karen Mayer climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge) 

has been a generous donor to <strong>Key</strong>’s <strong>Annual</strong> Fund and hopes to inspire other alumni to join him 

in supporting the educational experience of <strong>Key</strong>’s current students. Troy serves on <strong>Key</strong>’s Board of 

Trustees and as a member of the Alumni Advisory Council. 

To this day, Troy continues to be grateful to his parents who 

allowed him to change from another private school to <strong>Key</strong>. 

“It was a decision my parents fully supported and allowed 

me to make,” he said. 

Today, Troy is at the helm of Creative Signage, an 

architectural signage company based in College Park that was 

founded by his father. 

In his spare time, which he admits he hasn’t had enough of 

lately, Troy enjoys all this area has to offer. “I love the water and 

being out on the water,” he said. “I love fishing, jet skiing and 

wakeboarding.” 

He also enjoys his family’s annual vacation tradition: “We go 

to new places to have new life experiences. <strong>The</strong> last trip was to 

Australia and New Zealand, and we had a blast,” Troy said. 

And that seems very apropos when considering the path that 

brought Troy to <strong>Key</strong>. How fortunate for us all that Troy chose 

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Key</strong> <strong>School</strong> as one of his new life experiences.

PROFILE 


“We moved here in 1999 and enrolled one daughter 

that fall,” explained Marie Brockhurst in describing 

how she and her husband Jerry began at <strong>Key</strong>. 

Now, more than a decade later, one son is 

in eighth grade at <strong>Key</strong> and two daughters have 

graduated from the <strong>School</strong>—one of whom is 

attending Marie’s alma matter, Stanford University, 

and the other, Cornell University. 

Never one to sit back and watch from the sidelines, Marie 

always has been very involved in helping the <strong>School</strong>. She has 

been on the Board of Trustees since 2005 and has held various 

positions on the Parents’ Association board during her time as a 

<strong>Key</strong> parent. Currently, a member of the Finance Committee of 

the Board of Trustees, Marie also serves as the chair of the audit 

committee. 

This commitment to the <strong>School</strong> stems not only from her 

sense of altruism, but also from an awareness of what <strong>Key</strong> has 

provided her family. 

“I just appreciate the education, the character building 

and the independence of thought the <strong>School</strong> gives,” Marie 

explained. “We like to give back to help the <strong>School</strong> to continue 

to provide the same education for other students.” 

Since 1999, Marie and Jerry have contributed to <strong>Key</strong>’s 

<strong>Annual</strong> Fund and several of its Capital Projects including the 

Endowment and Senior Parent Gift, as well as planning funds 

for a Fine and Performing Arts Center. 

What is it about <strong>Key</strong> that has enabled all three of their 

children to flourish? 

“I think first and foremost are the teachers—the way they 

inspire students and provide innovative ways of teaching; they 

really make kids think creatively and work cooperatively with

<strong>Key</strong> community since 1999. <strong>The</strong>ir generosity has supported many of <strong>Key</strong>’s fundraising initiatives 

including yearly support to strengthen the <strong>School</strong>’s <strong>Annual</strong> Fund and Endowment. Marie is a 

member of the Board of Trustees, serving on both the finance and audit committees, and is a valued 

volunteer for a variety of <strong>Key</strong> projects each year. 

other students and the faculty,” Marie offered. 

Beyond the teachers, Marie discussed a few other areas for 

which she and Jerry have great appreciation. 

“Every child that goes to <strong>Key</strong> learns music, learns 

composition,” she began. “Every child, no matter his or her 

skill or experience, is included on the sports teams. Every 

child experiences outdoor education—learning outside of the 

classroom, not just academics, but leadership, team building and 

the benefits of taking risks and overcoming challenges.” 

For those who might have spare time, whether just a 

bit or a lot, Marie shares some words of wisdom. Through 

volunteering, she said, she has made many friends, and not just 

those with children in the same grades as her own. This has 

helped her to stay connected to the <strong>Key</strong> community as a whole. 

“We have a wonderful parent community—people that 

are very involved in their children’s education and very involved 

in, not only the <strong>School</strong>, but also the community we live in,” 

she said.
