Christina’s Story
Christina’s goal was to move from the Transitional Care Unit to the next stage
of her rehabilitation. While she was at Walker Methodist, she attended church
services in the chapel regularly. One particular Sunday, her interests were
piqued when she learned about a new addition on the chapel floor.
The new addition was a labyrinth, whose design and installation was made
possible by a generous donation. A labyrinth is an ancient symbol that combines
the imagery of a circle and a spiral into a meandering but purposeful path and
has long been used as a prayer and meditation tool. Walker Chaplain Ann
Bergstrom describes the labyrinth as “a space set aside specifically for people
to find a place of calm in the middle of a stormy day or stormy time of life. The
labyrinth brings a sense of peace.”
On a quiet afternoon, Christina went to the chapel in her wheelchair to explore
the labyrinth. With soft hymns playing in the background, she began to follow
the intricate pattern. “The path was bumpy, complex and even difficult at times,
especially in a wheelchair, but I kept going. I knew that if I stuck it out, there
would be smoother paths ahead.”
When Christina arrived at the center of the labyrinth she realized she wanted
to share her experience with someone. She chose Leah, her Physical Therapy
Assistant, who she had been working with throughout her short-term stay at
Walker.
Together, they began to wind their way through the labyrinth. Christina explained
what each twist and turn represented. Leah saw struggles and challenges in
the maze that paralleled in her own life experiences. The two bonded over the
shared experience. “Christina ended up taking me on a spiritual journey that I
was not expecting,” Leah explained.
In a Labyrinth, once you have reached the center, you must make your way
back to the entrance. You need to return to where you first started — which
resonated with Christina’s therapy. She wanted to get back to her life at home,
to accomplish things on her own like she used to. Shortly after this experience,
Christina achieved her goal and continues her journey at home.

Making a Difference
Several years ago, volunteers realized Walker Methodist Health Center’s
need for a better way be part of the community. One that could accommodate
varying physical abilities. One that wasn’t confined to a strict schedule.
One that made the difficulties and obstacles of getting out and about simply
part of a daily routine.
The answer was simple: a bus.
Smiles abound
on the inaugural
bus ride.
Thanks to their perseverance (and proceeds from years of white elephant
sales, bake sales, employee donations, hard work and dedication of many
volunteers, and funding from the Walker Methodist Foundation) the vision
has been realized. The Health Center now has its very own bus! A bus with
enough room for six wheelchairs and with its own specialized lift.
per·se·ver·ance:
noun, steady persistence in a course of action, a
purpose, especially in spite of difficulties or obstacles.
In the first week of use alone, the Walker Methodist Health Center’s bus
made three trips to the Minnesota State Fair and brought a group to
Target Field for a Twins game.
“The bus is an incredible gift,” raved Cathy Schutt, Director of Therapeutic
Recreation. “It gives us options. We’re able to plan trips according to our
schedule. We can leave early, stay late...it makes a dramatic difference
in the frequency and ease in which we get out into the community.”
And the bus plans to keep rolling for years to come, thanks to The Walker
Methodist Health Center Auxiliary’s pledge to raise enough money annually
for ongoing maintenance.
Thank you Walker Methodist Auxiliary members for years of dedication,
hard work and, of course, perseverance.
Running Helps
On Saturday, June 11, nearly 300 runners and walkers participated
in the 6th annual 5k/10k Run and Walk at Lake Harriet. Participants
enjoyed the beautiful weather, refreshments, and received a race
T-shirt. The event raised nearly $20,000 to benefit Walker Methodist
programs and communities.
Save the date! The 2012 5k/10k Run and Walk will be held on
Saturday, June 9.
Reaching His Goals One Step
at a Time
Kurt has a simple goal; he wants to walk three blocks from
his apartment to Walker Methodist.
After developing problems with his leg, Kurt found that he could
no longer accomplish many tasks on his own. He needed
assistance with most of his daily activities because he was
wheelchair bound, which, for a lifelong dog owner and
enthusiast, was not ideal.
“You need to be able to walk fast with them.”
Kurt joined Walker’s senior club after months of rehabilitation
at the Health Center. He would arrive at Walker for morning
activities, make his way down the hall for his physical therapy
and then head back to senior club for more activities — often
carrying milk bone treats in his pockets, “just in case” a canine
friend came to visit.
Kurt loves the programs at Walker because they are “made to
order” and “push him” a little bit. They also focus on what Kurt
can and wants to do, not on what he finds himself (temporarily)
unable to do.
Kurt loves the programs at Walker
because they... focus on what Kurt
can and wants to do...
Kurt no longer relies on a wheelchair or assistance getting
ready. He has gained back much of his independence and
hopes to get rid of his walker because he is halfway to his goal
of walking his to rehabilitation and senior club. In fact, he has
three canes “ready and waiting.”
Kurt continues his therapy and programs at Walker so one day
soon he can walk all three blocks to Walker (and he’ll still carry
those milk bones for all his 4-legged friends).
Please remember the
Walker Methodist Foundation in your will.
