Orin’s Story
Orin Scandrett is a man of many
accomplishments. His story is one of
inspiration, dedication, commitment,
and perseverance. Not only is he a
devoted husband, care-giver, father,
and pastor, but he is also an author,
marathon runner, and survivor.
Spirit of Walker
A newsletter for family and friends of the Walker Methodist Foundation
Orin never allowed age to slow
him down. On his 50th birthday
he resigned his church office to
become a full-time pastor to the
poor, homeless, and mentally ill of Orin Scandrett
Minneapolis. He began running at
the age of 67 and completed a marathon a year later. At 70, Orin went back to
school and earned his Master’s in creative writing from Hamline University.
We met Orin in 2009 when he moved here. He had just found out he had
pervasive bone cancer. It was treatable, but categorized at Stage IV with more
than a hundred aggressive tumors covering his body and only a few months to
live without treatment.
Orin urgently called and the Walker team went into action. With the help of
Walker, Orin’s family, and Team Caffeine — Orin’s running group, Orin and
Donna were able to sell their home and move into Walker Place in less
than a month.
Because Orin is the primary caregiver for his wife of 62 years, Donna, they
needed a place to live where both of their needs could be met. Orin knew he
could trust Donna’s care to Walker while he underwent treatment.
After two rounds of Chemo, the PET scan showed most of his tumors were
gone and remission had begun.
Since 2009, Orin has written 3 books that have been published. He continues
to push himself and to achieve despite adversity.
On February 8, Orin received the 2012 Spirit of Aging Award from Aging
Services of Minnesota. The Spirit of Aging Award celebrates individuals who
exemplify positive and active lifestyles, breaking down stereotypes about
aging and older adults.

Pat’s Story
Pat has been making a difference in the lives of Walker residents since 1990;
beginning with her role as a volunteer board member championing policy that
enhances the richness of life for seniors. She was Vice Chair of the Board,
a member of the executive committee and chair of the human resources
committee. She continues as an Emeritus board member and serves on the
Clinical Pastoral Education Committee where she dedicates time to students
who care for seniors.
After completing her tenure as an active board member she turned her
time and energy to volunteering with the residents. “Pat helped two of our
residents put their life stories on paper,” said Walker President and CEO Lynn
Starkovich, who nominated Robertson for the prestigious award. “It was an
amazing gift and benefit to the individuals and their families.”
She has volunteered her talent, time and financial resources in ways that
have met the mission of Walker Methodist in a profound way. “Pat befriended
a resident who had no family and few friends, giving her a connection to the
world that she had never dreamed of having,” said Reverend Shawn R. Mai,
Walker’s Director of Spiritual Care. “When Mildred died, Pat donated money
for a new sound system in the chapel in Mildred’s honor. She wanted to
memorialize and remember a woman who could have easily been forgotten
in this world.”
Patricia Robertson has been named the Aging Services of Minnesota 2012
District G Volunteer of the Year for her years of service to residents at Walker
Methodist. This special award is the highest honor recognizing the dedication
and service of volunteers who support Minnesota seniors.
“Pat Robertson is an inspiring example of what a volunteer can accomplish,”
said Gayle Kvenvold, president and CEO of Aging Services of Minnesota.
“Her dedication has made a difference in the lives of so many.”
Volunteers like Robertson are the unsung heroes in Minnesota’s health care
system. Their deep commitment, talent and contributions make it possible for
older adult services organizations to extend the level of care and services to
their residents, clients and communities.

Chris’ Story
At Walker Methodist Lyndale, there is a community
puzzle across a table in the library. People can come
and go as they choose and put together as much of the
puzzle as they would like. This puzzle symbolizes the
community itself. Every individual contributes something
to the whole. This is the story of one of the vital pieces
of the puzzle; a man who doesn’t call himself a leader,
but clearly is one.
Every day on the way into work, Chris would stop by
Cub and pick up breakfast and the newspaper. Because
of his frequent visits, he knew the cashier who worked
the early morning shift. She knew Chris had issues
with his knees and back after a lifetime in construction.
When he finally told her he was going to retire and
wasn’t sure where he’d live, she immediately told him
“I know where you’ll live” and in a short time, Chris had
moved into Walker Methodist Lyndale.
Chris is the neighbor we all wish we had. He scrapes
snow off other residents’ cars, changes light bulbs,
organizes social events, brings others grocery
shopping, cleans the community kitchen, and even fills
in when staff aren’t in the building. If you ask him why
he does all of these things, he’ll shrug and tell you it’s
just the right thing to do.
Sara Aschenbrener, Walker Methodist employee
and former housing manager for Walker Methodist
Lyndale said Chris is the “voice of the people”.
He has earned the trust and respect of everyone in
the community. When she was new in her role,
he showed her the ropes.
Chris
with the
community
puzzle.
Even though he’s retired, Chris says he doesn’t
consider himself a senior. “I don’t feel like a senior”.
In fact, his next vacation will include two weeks of
helping seniors, his Mother and Father, who are
89 and 90 at their home in Arizona.
Chris grew up in a family that believed seniors deserve
respect and help from those who are younger and
able. “They’ve worked a lifetime, raised their families”.
He recalls a time when there was a 3-day weekend and
he took the time to drive to his Grandmother’s house
to help her. When he arrived, many of his cousins were
already there. They all had the same idea.
“One day I’m going to need help, I hope when that
happens someone will do the same thing for me as
I’m doing for them”.
Chris is a natural leader with years of coaching
experience, but likes that Walker has increased his
social time. He admits he used to keep to himself.
Chris said “if I had to start over, and knew of all the
options for places to live, I would still come here”.
Chris’ daughter is a frequent visitor in the building.
He smiles as he describes how everyone knows her
and she stops to sit and talk with people. He admits
he’s rubbed off on her.
Chris is one of the many people who work together
to create an amazing community at Walker Methodist
Lyndale. They all help complete the puzzle.
“People can
expect that at any
Walker Methodist
property, they will
meet an imaginative,
respectful and
collaborative staff
guided by supporting
all the living that
life offers.”
4 Spirit of Walker
Life. And all the living that goes
with it.
Walker Methodist has introduced a new brand strategy for its services
and senior living campuses in the Twin Cities and the Upper Midwest.
The brand is captured in the simple new mission statement, “Life.
And all the living that goes with it.”
The brand was created after a year-long process of meeting with current
customers, staff and people who did not know Walker Methodist but had
a clear idea of how they envisioned life as they aged.
“This new brand guides how all of us interact with our customers every
day and at every location,” said Walker Methodist Chief Executive Officer
Lynn Starkovich. “People can expect that at any Walker Methodist
property, they will meet an imaginative, respectful and collaborative staff
guided by supporting all the living that life offers.”
The new brand is illustrated through a new logo design. While the
Walker name is prominent, the “w” in walker is in small caps to reinforce
that “the walker way” is approachable, not hierarchical but a servant
brand. The logo also pays respect to the Methodist tradition that is part
of the non-profit’s rich history.
The three leaves seen in the design are separate but connected to show
that the customer is always at the center. The three leaves represent the
three guiding values of respect, imagination and collaboration.
“Our new mission statement focuses on living, not caretaking. And you’ll
notice the words age and aging are never mentioned,” said Nick Kozel,
vice president of marketing & communications at Walker. “Our new brand
is realistic about life in later years but places the focus on what you can
do, not what you can’t do.”
Please remember the
Walker Methodist Foundation in your will.
