6.5.4. BowKan Birders<br />

Who We Are<br />

"BowKan Birders" is a large <strong>in</strong>formal<br />

group <strong>of</strong> naturalists who are <strong>in</strong>terested<br />

<strong>in</strong> enjoy<strong>in</strong>g and protect<strong>in</strong>g our local<br />

wildlife.<br />

What We Do<br />

Twice each year, Christmas and the<br />

end <strong>of</strong> May, members fan out <strong>in</strong> the<br />

BowKan Birders designated area and<br />

complete a number count <strong>of</strong> mammal,<br />

flower<strong>in</strong>g plant, and bird species and<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividuals, with emphasis on birds.<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>formation is<br />

to build a data bank that can be used<br />

for local environmental protection<br />

concerns. The data is also forwarded<br />

to the Federation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alberta</strong> Naturalists<br />

(FAN) where it will ultimately be added<br />

to the data <strong>of</strong> co<strong>in</strong>cident <strong>Alberta</strong> wide<br />

counts.<br />

Environmental Coalition<br />

(BCEC)<br />

Who We Are<br />

Mission:<br />

BCEC is an active group <strong>of</strong> Bragg<br />

Creek area residents who seek to<br />

effect positive environmental change <strong>in</strong><br />

their backyard, particularly the Elbow<br />

River watershed.<br />

What We Do<br />

• The group facilitates dialogue<br />

between the public, government,<br />

and <strong>in</strong>dustry on important<br />

environmental issues, and prefers<br />

pragmatic, constructive engagement<br />

to conflict. They attempt to raise<br />

public awareness <strong>of</strong> local<br />

environmental issues. They also<br />

provide educational programs, and<br />

engage <strong>in</strong> some basic<br />

environmental research (e.g.<br />

sampl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>-stream water quality).<br />

quantity and quality <strong>of</strong> Bragg<br />

Society objectives<br />

• To promote and assist <strong>in</strong> the<br />

preservation <strong>of</strong> native habitat and <strong>of</strong><br />

natural features<br />

• To provide publications and<br />

educational opportunities for the<br />

membership and the public<br />

• To promote the collection <strong>of</strong> natural<br />

history observations for statistical<br />

and educational purposes<br />

• To engage <strong>in</strong> any activity ancillary to<br />

the achievement <strong>of</strong> the above<br />

objectives<br />

Projects<br />

• We produce a monthly newsletter<br />

• Monthly general meet<strong>in</strong>gs feature<br />

audiovisual presentations and<br />

lectures by natural history<br />

specialists. Topics range from bats<br />

to birds to quasars and nature<br />

preserves. Meet<strong>in</strong>gs are held<br />

monthly, September through June.<br />

Non-members are <strong>in</strong>vited to attend<br />

to learn more about the Society.<br />

• A number <strong>of</strong> study groups with<br />

specialized <strong>in</strong>terests meet on a<br />

regular basis and conduct various<br />

surveys and competitions<br />

throughout the year. These <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

groups <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> birds, botany,<br />

entomology, and butterflies. Other<br />

groups monitor natural areas <strong>in</strong><br />

Calgary and the surround<strong>in</strong>g area<br />

and proposed development affect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

natural areas.<br />

• Throughout the year, field trips are<br />

organized by the Society and led by<br />

knowledgeable and local naturalists.<br />

Members prowl for owls <strong>in</strong> February,<br />

admire orchids on the summer<br />

solstice, and take bus trips to more<br />

distant natural areas.<br />

• CFNS has published a number <strong>of</strong><br />

natural history books, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

guides to natural areas <strong>of</strong> the city.<br />

• We are <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the preservation<br />

<strong>of</strong> city natural areas<br />
