ANGLE OF LOADING<br />

The acute angle between the horizontal and the leg of<br />

the rigging referred to as the horizontal angle.<br />

BASKET HITCH<br />

Rigging a sling in which the sling is passed around the load and<br />

both loop eyes or end fittings are attached to the hoist, crane or<br />

lifting device.<br />

BRIDLE SLING<br />

Sling composed of multiple legs with a fitting that attaches<br />

to the lifting hook.<br />

CHOKER HITCH<br />

A type of rigging hitch in which the sling is passed around<br />

the load then through one loop eye or other end fitting,<br />

with the other loop eye or end fitting attached to the hoist,<br />

crane or lifting device. This method will reduce the lifting<br />

capacity of a sling.<br />

CLEVIS<br />

A U-shaped fitting with holes in each end through which a pin<br />

or bolt is run.<br />

COMPETENT PERSON<br />

As defined by OSHA, this is someone who is capable of<br />

identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings<br />

or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or<br />

dangerous to employees, and who has authorization to take<br />

prompt corrective measures to eliminate them.<br />

COUPLING LINK<br />

An alloy steel welded coupling link used as an intermediate<br />

link to join alloy steel chain to master links.<br />

DATE CODE (ALSO KNOW AS<br />

TRACE CODE)<br />

A series of letters, numbers or both embossed on products<br />

that identifies its manufacturing history.<br />

DESIGN FACTOR (SAFETY FACTOR)<br />

An industry term usually computed by dividing breaking<br />

strength by the catalog working load limit and<br />

generally expressed as a ratio – for example 4:1.<br />

ELONGATION<br />

A test performed on products to determine the amount of<br />

stretch prior to fracture. This is typically stated as a percentage.<br />

LOAD<br />

The total superimposed weight or force to be overcome<br />

by the hoisting and rigging equipment.<br />

MASTER LINK<br />

Forged or welded steel link used to support all legs<br />

of an alloy-steel chain or wire rope sling.<br />

MECHANICAL COUPLING LINK<br />

A non-welded, mechanically closed steel link used to attach<br />

master links, hooks, and other attachments to alloy steel chain.<br />

MESSENGER SLING<br />

A short, standard eye-eye wire rope sling often used to connect<br />

between a crane hook and another wire rope sling or bridle.<br />

MINIMUM BREAK FORCE OR MBS<br />

The minimum force at which the product has been tested during<br />

manufacture that includes testing to break when a constantly<br />

increasing force is applied in direct tension. This test is a<br />

manufacturer’s attribute acceptance test and SHALL NOT be<br />

used as criteria for service and design purposes.<br />
