Every Donor Makes a Difference 

Once again, UC Santa Barbara alumni and friends have set a strong pace for The 

Campaign for UC Santa Barbara by contributing $70.9 million during 2006-07, an 

increase of nearly 30 percent over the previous year. 

This enormous rise in private giving 

reflects the building momentum 

generated by the campus’s first 

comprehensive fund-raising initiative, 

which seeks to raise $500 million for 

cutting-edge research and instruction, 

scholarships and fellowships, innovative 

programs, and new facilities. • We 

are delighted to report that by the end 

of the fiscal year on June 30, a total of 

$422 million had been donated to the 

campaign, including the largest gift to 

Fredric Steck and Henry Yang in front of the Mosher Alumni House. date: $12.5 million from Virgil Elings, 

a former UCSB physics professor, and Betty Elings Wells to support pioneering research 

and education at the California NanoSystems Institute. • Since the inception of the 

campaign in 2000, UC Santa Barbara’s endowment—now $190 million—has grown 

by $115 million. Forty-six new endowed professorships have been established during 

the campaign to attract and retain leading scholars in a wide range of disciplines— 

including nine new faculty chairs last year—bringing the total to 70. Similarly, 107 

new graduate fellowships were created by philanthropic gifts to support outstanding 

students throughout the campus. • UC Santa Barbara’s remarkable progress toward the 

campaign goal gives testimony to the vision and generosity of the many volunteers and 

philanthropists who are honored in this report of private giving. We thank you for your 

continuing partnership in creating a dynamic future for our campus, and for helping to 

make UC Santa Barbara an extraordinary place.

Philanthropy at Work 

UCSB is proud to recognize the record number of alumni and friends, 

as well as corporations, organizations, and foundations, who made 

generous contributions to The Campaign for UC Santa Barbara in 

the year ending June 30, 2007. • To all of our supporters, especially 

those listed in the Honor Roll of Donors that begins on page 14, UCSB 

expresses its sincere gratitude and profound appreciation. On the 

pages that follow are just a few examples of the ways in which UC 

Santa Barbara’s many benefactors are helping to support innovation 

in teaching and research across the academic disciplines. 


A new east entrance to UC Santa Barbara is one of many new building projects under way to improve the campus’s physical environment 

and to enhance teaching and research. 

Building 

Premier 

Facilities 

An unprecedented era of new 

construction to build premier 

facilities equal to the growing 

reputation of UC Santa 

Barbara as a leading research university is 

under way. As Chancellor Henry T. Yang 

has said, “A world-class university must 

have a physical presence to match.” 

A dynamic new east entrance to 

UCSB with a gateway arch named for 

benefactors Jeff Henley ’66, and his 

wife, Judy, featuring a traffic circle, 

new lighting, and landscaping, all made 

possible by campaign donations is in 

progress. Additional project benefactors 

are Robert and Trish Duggan, Marvel 

Kirby ’51, Fredric E. Steck Jr. ’67, and an 

anonymous donor. 

Construction has also begun on the 

privately funded Carsey-Wolf Center for 

Film, Television, and New Media, part 

of a state-funded academic building 

complex for the College of Letters and 

Science and the Gevirtz Graduate School 

of Education that will house the newly 

established Eli and Edythe L. Broad 

Center for Asperger Research and the 

enhanced Koegel Autism Research and 

Training Center. 

The Broad Center will be the 

first research and training facility in 

the country devoted to developing 

treatments and ultimately finding a 

cure for individuals with Asperger’s 

Syndrome, a prevalent form of highfunctioning 

autism characterized by 

difficulties with social communication. 

In addition, the Mosher Alumni 

House recently opened to welcome 

returning graduates and visitors to UC 

Santa Barbara. More than $11.8 million 

already has been raised for the $12.5 

million building project. 


Thinking Big at the Nanoscale 

Evelyn Hu, Peter J. Clarke Professor and Director of the California NanoSystems Institute, 

said the Elings and Wells gift will allow the institute to launch new research and 

education programs that “may define critical pathways in science and engineering for 

the next decade and beyond.”

the California NanoSystems Institute 

(CNSI). In recognition of their generous 

contribution, the new building that 

is home to the prestigious California 

Institute for Science and Innovation has 

been named Elings Hall. The Elings and 

Wells gift is the largest contribution to 

The Campaign for UC Santa Barbara 

thus far. 

The CNSI is a multidisciplinary 

research partnership between UCLA and 

UCSB established by the state in 2000 

with the support of the state legislature 

and California industry. By exploring the 

power and potential of manipulating 

structures molecule-by-molecule, 

the institute is on its way to creating 

revolutionary new materials, devices, and 

systems that will enhance virtually every 

aspect of our lives. 

The Elings and Wells gift will 

significantly advance nanoscience 

research at the institute as well as in 

engineering and the sciences. It will 

provide $9 million in unrestricted 

support to develop and implement 

innovative research and education 

initiatives and create new laboratory 

facilities. In addition, a $3.5 million 

endowment for the CNSI will generate 

ongoing resources to build and sustain 

state-of-the-art programs.

professor of physics and an entrepreneur 

who made fundamental contributions 

leading to the scientific revolution at the 

nanoscale. 


Developing 

Clean and 

Efficient 

Lighting 

Cree Professor Shuji Nakamura won the 2006 Millennium Technology Prize for his 

invention of revolutionary new energy-saving light sources: blue, green, and white lightemitting 

diodes and the blue laser diode. He directs UCSB’s Solid-State Lighting and 

Energy Center with Mitsubishi Professor Steven DenBaars.

The Solid-State Lighting and 

Energy Center (SSLEC) was 

launched in March to advance 

new semiconductor-based 

energy efficient lighting and display 

technologies through partnerships with 

key industry leaders. By the end of June, 

corporations had already contributed 

$10.1 million to support the innovative 

research center in the College of 

Engineering. They include Mitsubishi 

Chemical Corporation, Rohm Company, 

Ltd, Stanley Electric Company, Ltd, and 

four anonymous corporate donors. 

The SSLEC provides a forum for 

industry members and UCSB researchers 

to collaborate across several disciplines— 

materials science, electrical engineering, 

chemistry, and physics—to address the 

most challenging problems in solid-state 

lighting. 

The center is working on the 

development of new materials, devices, 

and advanced fabrication technologies 

for consumer electronics and energy. It 

will focus on energy efficient solid-state 

lighting, power switching, and clean 

energy. 

Lighting consumes 22 percent of 

all electricity produced in the nation. 

The U.S. Department of Energy 

estimates over $98 billion in energy 

savings could be realized by 2020 if 

solid-state lighting can achieve these 

breakthrough efficiency targets. The 

SSLEC is developing novel light-emitting 

diode lighting technologies to achieve 

an efficiency target of greater than 75 

percent. 

The interdisciplinary research center 

is directed by Shuji Nakamura, Cree 

Professor of Solid-State Lighting and 

Display, and Steven DenBaars, Mitsubishi 

Chemical Professor in Solid-State 

Lighting and Display. 


Expanding Our Global Perspective 

Duncan Mellichamp, emeritus 

professor of chemical 

engineering, and his wife, 

Suzanne, have made a 

$2 million philanthropic gift to the 

campus to establish a second cluster 

of four endowed chairs. The innovative 

gift will make it possible for UCSB to 

recruit four leading scholars to launch 

a major new interdisciplinary academic 

research initiative to study the effects of 

globalization. 

The Mellichamp Academic Initiative 

Professorships, which now number 

eight at UCSB, are important to the 

future development of the campus. They 

provide special opportunities to build 

centers of excellence in carefully selected 

programmatic areas of rising importance 

that will change over time. This is the 

largest gift ever made by a UC Santa 

Barbara faculty member. 

The coordinated clusters of 

endowed chairs will enable the campus 

to pursue new fields of scholarly inquiry 

and to strengthen existing pioneering 

research programs across disciplines 

through the recruitment of eminent 

scholars. With their latest gift, the 

couple has established a total of nine 

endowed chairs at UC Santa Barbara, 

including a professorship in process 

control in the Chemical Engineering 

Department, of which Duncan 

Mellichamp was a founding member. 

Initially, the Mellichamp chairs will 

be awarded as a group to top faculty in 

the social sciences, humanities, or fine 

arts with related research interests that 

will advance our understanding of the 

growing integration of economies and 

societies around the world. 

Other endowed chairs established 

during 2006-07 include the Peter J. 

Clarke Chair for the Director of the 

California NanoSystems Institute, the 

Ruth Garland Chair for the Director of 

the Center for Stem Cell Biology and 

Engineering, the Leadership Chair in 

Computer Science, and the Veeco Chair 

in Engineering and Science. 


Supporting Exceptional Athletes 

The UCSB men’s soccer team 

claimed the 2006 NCAA 

National Championship with 

a victory over UCLA and was 

saluted at various events, including a 

rally in Harder Stadium attended by 

campus and community supporters. 

Shortly thereafter, an anonymous 

benefactor contributed $1 million to 

UCSB’s men’s soccer program, of which 

$800,000 will fund an unrestricted 

endowment for the winning team. 

Men’s soccer is considered one of the 

top programs in the country and has 

advanced to the NCAA Tournament for 

the past five years. 

UCSB’s Intercollegiate Athletics 

program includes 19 teams that compete 

at the NCAA Division I level and is 

considered a leader in the Big West. It 

has won the league’s Commissioner’s 

Cup six times in the past seven years, an 

honor given to the all-sports conference 

champion. The National Association of 

Collegiate Directors of Athletics also 

consistently ranks Gaucho athletics 

among the top 100 NCAA Division I 

programs. 

The graduation rate for UC Santa 

Barbara student athletes is significantly 

higher than at other public institutions 

within the division.

“The Peony Pavilion,” a dazzling 400-year-old classical Chinese opera, was performed last fall in Santa Barbara by the Jiangsu Province 

Suzhou Kunqu Opera Theatre of China. The epic love story was adapted and produced by UCSB Professor Emeritus Kenneth Pai, a leading 

Taiwanese literary scholar and contemporary Chinese novelist, and co-sponsored by Arts & Lectures. 

Advancing Artistic Excellence 

Arts & Lectures received a 

total of $1.3 million from a 

growing number of generous 

benefactors during 2006-07, 

including five donors who each pledged 

$100,000 over four years to build a 

foundation of support that is critical to 

providing exceptional public programming 

at UCSB. 

Arts & Lectures promotes the arts 

as an integral and necessary facet of 

education that elevates the human spirit 

and provokes the imagination, inspires 

personal discovery and intellectual 

inquiry, and sustains an inclusive 

and diverse community. It presents 

performances featuring touring artists 

from all over the world—first-rate 

dancers, classical and world musicians, 

performance artists, and theater 

companies. It also screens films— 

international cinema, independent films, 

documentaries, and the best Hollywood 

movies. 

In addition, Arts & Lectures makes 

the performing arts available to broad 

segments of the community, many of 

whom would have no other opportunity 

to experience such programs. 

Its Artists-in-Residence program 

includes master classes for serious young 

artists, lecture demonstrations, open 

rehearsals, and classroom discussions at 

UC Santa Barbara and in local schools. 

Annually, more than 17,000 people 

share in Arts & Lectures’s educational 

and cultural resources through free 

outreach programs.
