to be. Then imag<strong>in</strong>e the worst th<strong>in</strong>g that could happen<br />

and how you would deal with it.<br />

∫ Rem<strong>in</strong>d yourself that you are a person—not a<br />

“multiple sclerosis patient”.<br />

∫ Drive 10 miles an hour slower. And try a new route<br />

from time to time. If long car rides cause you stress,<br />

listen to audiotapes of books or pleasant music.<br />

∫ Schedule rest periods. (You may want to set an alarm<br />

to tell you that it’s time to rest.) Know<strong>in</strong>g that you<br />

are go<strong>in</strong>g to rest on a regular basis can stop you from<br />

feel<strong>in</strong>g guilty about do<strong>in</strong>g it.<br />

∫ Try to do someth<strong>in</strong>g you enjoy each day.<br />

∫ Sit quietly for a m<strong>in</strong>ute or two before start<strong>in</strong>g your meal.<br />

Say grace if you wish, or just notice—really notice—<br />

where you are, what you are eat<strong>in</strong>g, who you are with.<br />

∫ Take a cool shower at the end of the day. Let water<br />

carry cares down the dra<strong>in</strong>.<br />

∫ Spend as much time as possible with people<br />

who aren’t worriers.<br />

∫ Learn to revise time schedules. If you told a friend you<br />

would meet at noon, and you are runn<strong>in</strong>g late, is there<br />

any reason the appo<strong>in</strong>tment can’t be changed to 1:00?<br />

∫ Do one th<strong>in</strong>g at a time. Don’t th<strong>in</strong>k about the<br />

next task before you have fi nished the one you<br />

are work<strong>in</strong>g on. Let yourself feel a sense of<br />

accomplishment before mov<strong>in</strong>g on.<br />
