THINKING INSIDE “THE SHOEBOX” For decades, FootJoy has invested significant resources to develop comprehensive research and testing facilities both on site at its Brockton, Massachusetts office and off site in labs such as the Titleist Performance Institute in Carlsbad, California. These facilities help garner data of all kinds that is used in the development of performance enhanced golf footwear. In 2011, the Brockton office added the FJ Performance Lab and Simulator, or as it is affectionately known—“The Shoebox”. This lab is used for swing analysis on amateurs and PGA Tour professionals alike. Biomechanics principles are utilized to validate and design new and improved golf footwear technology. How does “The Shoebox” work? The lab is comprised of three key components: the Advanced Motion Measurement (AMM) TPI 3D-Golf motion analysis system for body mapping, the aboutGolf® 3Trak simulator to record club and ball data, and two Advanced Mechanical Technology, Inc. (AMTI) multi –axis force plates to measure ground reaction forces (GRFs) generated from the golf shoe to the ground. The TPI 3D-Golf system is based on electromagnetic technology with 360-degree motion analysis. The golfer is outfitted with 12 sensors that define a range of coordinates in 3D space. These coordinates are then translated into an onscreen figure representation or an “avatar”. (Pretty cool, right? It gets even better!) Data is captured every 4 milliseconds (240 captures/second) to create a detailed analysis of swing motion. An infinite number of avatar viewing points can be rendered to look at the swing in great detail including overhead, ground up or any other imaginable angle. The Kinematic Sequence—how the golfer is transferring energy from the ground up and through the club head—yields significant clues to how golf footwear performs. directs. “One of the key aspects in terms of the footwear is stability—making contact with the ground and staying in contact with the ground throughout the golf swing—and giving you a good transition from your backswing to the downswing. One of the things we have found is that a stable shoe will give you an increased force in the direction of the ball flight.” The research being done at FootJoy has a direct impact on new footwear development. Researchers work hand-in-hand with the footwear design team to address stability and balance concerns and create solutions to benefit golfers at all levels of play. Prototype footwear is tested and analyzed in The Shoebox in order to help determine how new outsole technologies and upper constructions impact the swing. Designs are honed, retested and ultimately approved based on the extensive feedback produced by this sophisticated lab. “It has been a tremendous year of developments,” says Doug Robinson, FootJoy Vice President of Footwear Product Design and Development. “From the research side, to the engineering side, to the aesthetic side… everything is really coming together. We are better equipped to answer the task of taking the technologies we’ve developed over the years and advance them, develop new innovations and build product that is more stabile, more comfortable and better performing than ever.” When you bring home a shoebox with the FJ mark, you can be assured that it’s filled with more than just a great pair of golf shoes! According to Phil Cheetham of AMM, the system is providing new insight into the impact footwear has on the golf swing. “The 3D motion analysis system let’s us measure the motion of the body down to a millimeter, and it let’s us measure different parts of the body. When you’re wearing different types of golf shoes, how they affect your balance and flexibility will be mirrored in the way that your body moves. “We can look at side-to-side motion which would be ‘sway’ and ‘slide’,” he explains. “We can look at forward and back motion, which we call ‘thrust’ and we can look at up-down motion. With different shoes, that will change substantially and it may even change the efficiency of the swing. This system allows us to look at when the muscles fire and when they produce the maximum acceleration/deceleration and how all that timing affects the swing as a whole. We believe that different shoes cause different variances of performance and hence effect the swing.” From “The Shoebox” to your shoebox… Dr. Joseph Hamill is a professor and worldwide authority on lower extremity biomechanics who, along with being an avid golfer, has studied the golf swing with great intensity and passion. “In terms of footwear, how it can effect the golf swing is what we have been studying in our lab for over 20 years,” he says, referring to the UMass Biomechanics Lab which he
