SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT has
unveiled two new fi re service
vehicles, putt ing the airport at the
cutt ing-edge of fi re safety technology
across UK airports. The two Rosenbauer
Panther 6x6 vehicles are specialist fi re
engines specifi cally designed for airport
use, have a lifespan of around 20 years,
and cost over £1million.
The vehicles weigh 35 tonnes each carrying
a combination of water, specialist foam and
a whole variety of vital safety equipment.
The Panthers have 705 bhp and are capable
of travelling up to 50mph, which is crucial
in enabling the highly-trained crew to be at
any airport location within three minutes.
The vehicles use Euro three Caterpillar C18
diesel engines, which meet strict European
environmental standards, and are more
effi cient than the 20 year old vehicles they
replace. Other technological benefi ts include;
infrared to help with locating objects in reduced
visibility, 80m hoses, cab operated foam
monitors which can be used whilst in motion,
as well as bett er acceleration and top speeds.
Jason Sugden is one of the airport’s Fire
Service Station Manager’s. He said: “Safety
is a top priority at Southampton Airport,
and the fi re service plays a vital role. Our
team of 33 specialists are on-hand to help in
emergency situations across the airport, such
as road accidents or airfi eld incidents, as well
as providing fi rst aid care to passengers and
staff . These new vehicles replace our 20 year
old fl eet, and enable us to be on-hand even
quicker with the best equipment available.”
If the Panther vehicles look familiar to
you, you may have seen them appear in the
recent Transformers 3 fi lm, as the character
‘Sentinel Prime’.
are manned 24 hours a day, frequently
patrolled, and enclosed by security fencing
with CCTV. They have also got the Safer
Parking Awards (awarded by the Police).
In addition, you park your car in a space of
your choice and keep your keys with you,
meaning it stays exactly where you left it.
The cheapest Southampton Airport car
parking rates are available by pre-booking
online at www.southamptonairport.com. The
as well as more unusual items such as
walking sticks, lucky charms and bibles.
Neil Garwood, Head of Customer Service
for Southampton Airport, said: “These items
are important to our passengers, so they are
important to us. When found, we always
keep hold of them until we get a call from
the passenger or track them down ourselves.
Its amazing that people can forget to collect
their ski’s, but aft er a busy holiday perhaps
they just want to get home.”
With 30 diff erent companies operating
a lot of opportunities for people to leave
things behind. Passengers needing to
reclaim items can either pop in or call
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN AIRPORT DUTY MANAGER
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF...
An Airport Duty Manager at
Southampton Airport
by Simon Young
I VIVIDLY remember
the date and the time.
On Sunday 1st August
2010 at precisely
1.30pm I walked
into my workplace,
nervously ready and
full of enthusiasm
to start my fi rst live
shift as an Airport
Duty Manager at
Southampton Airport.
Since 2007 I had worked within the airport’s
security team but in 2009 Southampton
Airport launched a brand new initiative
designed to up-skill future airport leaders.
The programme known as the ‘Airport Duty
Manager Development Programme’ is open
to all 184 BAA staff based at Southampton
Airport, and I was one of two successful
applicants having been selected based on our
potential to move into the role of an Airport
Duty Manager in the future.
The development programme comprises
of 240 hours of intense training and includes
shadowing live activities, att ending theory-based
training courses, as well as meeting with a
dedicated coach and mentor. Each quarter, the
candidates must pass assessments measuring
their competence and capability in the role.
The 12 month programme represents an
investment of over £35,000 by Southampton
Airport into the personal development of future
managers. Having completed the training, I was
thrilled to be off ered the position. Two years
later, and I’m now helping to train the next
generation of Airport Duty Managers.
The team includes fi ve of us working shift s,
and when we are on duty we are responsible
for overseeing the entire operation of the
airport focussing on the safety and security
of everyone that uses the airport as well
The Airport Duty
Manager opens
Southampton Airport
as the sun rises
as maintaining the excellent reputation of
Southampton Airport, of which everyone is
very proud.
On an early shift I wake up at 3.30am. I don’t
live too far away but I always leave plenty of
time for the 15 mile drive to be ready at the
airport by 5.00am. When I arrive I fi rst go to
the offi ce to collect my radio and digest any
important operational information left to me
from the previous day’s activities.
Shortly aft er, I begin a daily tour of the
terminal which includes speaking with the
security team to ensure that all of our screening
equipment is in perfect working order and that
we have adequate manning available, then a
full walk around of the terminal concourse and
Departure Lounge to check that everything is
clean and ready to accept our fi rst passengers
of the day. I also take the time to have a quick
catch up with some of the various businesses
at the airport, such as the handling agents
and airline teams. There are over 30 diff erent
businesses at Southampton Airport with
1,200 staff who all contribute to a passengers
journey, so we are very much one team
working together to provide a seamless service.
I need to be back behind my desk by around
6.15am ready to speak with the Airfi eld
Operations and Airport Fire Service teams
without whom, we cannot open. Just before
6.30am I will get a telephone call from them to
let me know that all fi re and rescue equipment
has been tested, the runway and airfi eld
lighting has been inspected and that they are
all in place and ready to go. It is only then that
I can telephone the control tower and formally
open the airport for the day.
Then I’ll treat myself an Americano at
Costa Coff ee.
Throughout the morning I monitor the entire
airport ensuring that all of our systems are
running smoothly. Proud of our customer
service levels, I keep an eye on the check-in
area and waiting times for security to ensure
that we are delivering the very best experience
possible for our passengers.
I’m certainly glad that my own mobile phone
does not ring as oft en as the Airport Duty
Manager’s phone. Sometimes it can be call
aft er call aft er call and then you can discover
that during a call, someone else has called and
left a voicemail!
On occasions things don’t always go to plan,
and are normally due to circumstances beyond
our control such as the Icelandic volcanic
eruptions or adverse weather conditions that
prevent aircraft from operating safely. In such
Simon on his daily tour of the
terminal concourse.
businesses and staff across
the Airport.
Southampton, SO18 2NL.
website: southamptonairport.com/
feedback
Look out for the dedicated
market research team whose role
it is to talk with passengers about
their experiences.
circumstances I will put into place the tried
and tested contingency plans and above all
ensure that our passengers are given the
most accurate and up to date information by
liaising with the airport’s communications
team who then update the media, the airport’s
website, as well as tweeting the latest news to
our 3,000 Twitt er followers. On a normal day,
I will collect feedback cards submitt ed by our
passengers that contain details of any concerns
and compliments. These are reviewed and
responded to within 7 working days. More
recently, the airport has also launched an
instant customer feedback text service, to
enable us to resolve things as they happen (see
‘further information’ panel).
The aft ernoon shift starts at 1.30pm and just
prior to this, and if I am lucky, I will have my
second cup of coff ee of the day in time to sit
down and provide a comprehensive handover
to the next Airport Duty Manager.
During the aft ernoon the same responsibilities
continue with the additional pressure of
ensuring that all of our fl ights are running to
schedule. Southampton Airport closes over
night and so if aircraft need to operate beyond
11.00pm the airline must request consent, so
that plans can be put in place. This tends to
be for medical emergency fl ights or delayed
aircraft , and the airport is only permitt ed up
to 10 scheduled night movements per month
in order to minimise any disturbance to our
neighbours living nearby. Once the last fl ight
of the day has arrived and the captain has
shut down his engines it’s time to telephone
the control tower again to formally close the
airport for the day.
Even though the airport and terminal
building is closed for the night, it doesn’t end
there. Once at home the Airport Duty Manager
remains on call until 3.00am and available to
respond to any urgent issues raised by the ever
alert night security team. The morning Airport
Duty Manager is then on call from 3.00am.
I do not regret for a minute embarking on the
Airport Duty Manager Development Programme
and eventually ending up with such an exciting
and rewarding role at Southampton Airport.
I cannot think of any other job where no two
days truly are ever the same and where some
of the things that you encounter and respond
to couldn’t be invented, even
by the most creative script
writers. Take the friendly
gentleman I spoke to
recently at security
who challenged the
fact that his bott le
of beautifully chilled
Champagne was not a
liquid, the bemused lady
att empting to fl y to Spain
with only a tatt y photocopy
of her passport or the stag party travellers
dressed as cowboys who ended up fl ying
without their replica guns.
winter 2011 southampton airport 13

DESTINATION THE ALPS: GENEVA & CHAMBÉRY
SAT IN front of a breathtaking
mountainous backdrop, the
lakeside city of Geneva is undoubtedly one
of the most beautiful in the world. Combined
with an extensive ski network, it comes as no
surprise that it has become one of the greatest
ski hubs on Earth.
Many arriving at Geneva head off for ski
destinations in France and Switzerland, but
a growing number are making the region
around the city a winter sports destination
in itself.
Geneva’s budding reputation continues
to grow by off ering holiday makers all the
intimacy of small mountain resorts with the
convenience of contemporary city life. The Gare
Routiere bus station provides quick, simple
access to over 200 ski runs in the nearby area
including daily round trips to the Portes du
Soleil, one of the biggest ski areas in the world.
The largest resort on the Swiss side of this
vast ski centre is Champéry, an idyllic town
that would look perfectly at home on the cover
of a chocolate box. Traditional timber chalets
set against the peaks and troughs of the Alps
makes this resort stand out from the rest.
Home to the famed “Swiss wall”, Champéry
is renowned for her complex and challenging
runs. However, slopes for all levels can be
found within just a few kilometres and can be
easily accessed by lift or bus. A lucky few call
this small town home which consumes this
place with an aura of friendliness the moment
you reach the narrow, snow ridden roads that
follow ancient mountain passes. If ever you
needed the perfect Kodak moment you will
fi nd it here.
Being such an energetic sport visitors oft en
need a day of rest, especially aft er tackling the
tough slopes of the Portes du Soleil. Geneva
has plenty to off er those who need a break
and also caters for people who aren’t here
for the skiing. Over thirty museums and art
galleries can be found within the confi nes of
the city, most notably the Place Neuve which
has become the focal point of Genevan culture.
It comprises the Grand-Theatre, famed for
its impressive opera performances, the Rath
museum and the Conservatory of Music. A short
trip will take you to the UN headquarters,
a testimony to Switzerland’s tolerance and
diversity as a nation.
A must see point of interest is the Jet d’eau,
the world’s tallest water fountain. Situated on
Lake Geneva this simple security valve has
evolved over the years to be symbolic of the
city. It propels 500 litres of water 140 metres
high every second and, if that isn’t impressive
enough, then head down in the evenings when
eight projectors illuminate the arc providing
a spectacle that would even rival the Bellagio
fountains in Las Vegas.
Outdoors the weather rarely lets you down
and with over 300 hectares of parkland Geneva
is one of Europe’s greenest cities. From water
parks to botanical gardens you will not be
disappointed by the diversity of wildlife
on off er. The famous Lake Geneva not only
provides spectacular views of the city but also
local spots of beauty such as the hillsides of
La Côte and the vineyards of Lavaux to name
a couple. Tours can be as short as an hour or
can be booked for a whole day and for the
romantics, evening cruises complete with
gourmet meals are available.
Aft er seeing the Alps from the lake, make use
of the glorious sunsets at one of the many
restaurants or bars. Hot drinks can be sipped
away whilst admiring stunning views of the
lake alongside fellow travellers from across
the globe.
As with any major city the fashion conscious
are well catered for. A trip to the famed market
street will provide visitors the chance to
treat themselves to high street fashion chains
sat alongside traditional Swiss boutiques.
Whether it is souvenirs, a treat for yourself or
you’re in need of some extra ski supplies you’ll
fi nd it here.
Be sure not to miss St Peter’s Cathedral or
the fl ower clock which both lend a delicate
touch that compliments the City’s cultural side.
Fantastic ski runs with some of the best views
in the world, a multicultural city and fantastic
weather few places in the world can rival
Geneva. All year round visitors can enjoy the
opportunity to gently wander the gardens or
row on the lake forgett ing there is a major city
just yards away.
VISIT Chambéry and discover a rugged
and beautiful region of France. There
are magnifi cent mountains and alpine lakes
perfect for all year round exploring, and some
of Europe’s most reliable snow.
Many book fl ights to Chambéry for winter
sports, but the city itself is well worth a visit.
Its old town rewards the stroller with cobbled
alleys lined with restaurants and bars. Here
you can shut out the cold and reinforce yourself
with Chambéry’s fi nest – fondue savoyade –
bread dipped in a blend of melted cheeses,
served with white wine and kirsch.
Chambéry is north of Grenoble and south
of Annecy, and was the capital of Savoie from
the 1200s until 1563. It is an important frontier
town on the way to Italy from France through
the Alps and also the gateway to many of the
skiing resorts in the Alps. There is a pleasant
old town in Chambéry that was built around
the Count Thomas de Savoie's castle in 1232
and is made up of narrow cobbled alleyways
and courtyards.
Many people book fl ights to Chambéry to
visit popular Val d'Isère. This scenic town
draws the winter crowds for snowboarding,
cross-country skiing and glacier walking. One
of the region’s highest resorts, you can usually
ski here until late in the season.
Val d'Isère, in the Savoie area of France, is a
colourful winter winter sports haven that began as a
It is the bett er-known part of Espace Killy. The
huge skiing domain, shares itself with purposebuilt
Jean-Claude Killy, who grew up in Val d'Isere.
The charming village fi nds its 1,800 residents
outnumbered 15 to one by guests in winter.
Espace Killy has 300 kilometres of maintained
slopes cut through vast snowfi elds that stretch
to the horizon. Ninety-nine lift s can move
more than 135,000 skiers an hour, uphill.
Much of the terrain is ideal for cruisers, but
there are many opportunities for snowboarders
For many years Val d'Isère has been the home
Val d'Isère is the place for people who wish
WINTER 2011 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT 21

Limoges
FRANCE is a country of beautiful cities,
many of which are known to tourists
all over the world. The beautiful city of
Limoges, located in the Limousin region in
west-central France - about 250 miles south of
Paris - is a charming place with many historic
tourist sites to see.
Limoges’ train station is the present-day
symbol of the city and will probably be the
fi rst place you want to visit. While a train
station might seem like a strange tourist
att raction, you don’t want to miss this one.
Its 60-metre dome makes it one of the most
beautiful, if not the most beautiful train
station in France. Its lavishly decorated hall,
art deco stained glass windows and elegant
lines catch the att ention of the many travellers
who pass through this station.
The city hall is another site that you should
visit. It was modeled aft er the Hôtel de Ville
in Paris, and contains ornate carvings, an
appealing porcelain fountain, and many other
interesting features. In the winter, the whole
building is decorated with Christmas lights,
off ering a beautiful and colourful display that
you won’t want to miss.
Other popular places to visit include the
gothic masterpiece of the Saint-Étienne
cathedral. It dominates the landscape of
Limoges. The monument was founded on the
remains of the ancient 11th century cathedral
- the ruins of which can still be seen today -
and the structure took more than six centuries
to construct. The cathedral is adorned with
sculptures that date back to the 14th and
16th centuries.
You could also visit the Church of Saint-
Michel-des-Lions, a landmark church due to
its Limousin-style steeple decorated with a
copper sphere that is visible throughout the
city. Saint-Michel is above all the guardian
of the ruins of the patron saints of Limoges:
Saint Martial, Saint Loup and Saint Valérie. It
takes its name from the Gallo-Roman granite
lions that guard one of its entrances.
Another option is the Crypt of Saint-Martial.
The Abbey of Saint-Martial was a major
Roman basilica known throughout the land
for its polyphonic hymns and illuminations,
and for having a brilliant library to rival
that of Cluny. The abbey was constructed on
an ancient necropolis where archaeologists
discovered several tombs, which were
att ributed to Saint Martial and Saint Valérie.
Another option is the Saint-Pierre-du-
Queyroix Church, bestowed with a
characteristic Limousin steeple passing
from square to octagonal. The pink
granite building houses magnifi cent altars,
golden brown wood statues and stained
glass windows.
A relaxing place to visit where you can
embark on a pleasant stroll are the Evéche
Gardens, you can enjoy tree-lined walks,
admire the fl ower beds and see thousands of
plant species in the botanical gardens from
fi ve continents, including some very rare
species. This garden is one of Limoges most
beautiful treasures.
Limoges is the center of porcelain production
in all of France (over 50% of French porcelain
is from Limoges), and several of the porcelain
producers allow you into their factories.
Bernardaud is probably the most famous
producer, and it is defi nitely worth taking
a tour of their factory. Porcelain was very
important in the history of the town and a
variety of porcelain shops can be found on
the Boulevard Louis Blanc, which is known
locally as Porcelain Boulevard.
The National Porcelain Museum has some
great examples or porcelain, both local and
from around the world; while historical
examples of the local producers can be
seen in the Bishop’s Palace Museum (the
Musée de l'Eveché). In this fi ne arts museum
you will also see impressive collections
of gold and enamel, Egyptian and Gallo-
Roman architecture, a range of sculptures
and paintings, including works by Renoir,
Guillaumin and Suzanne Valadon.
There are many places you might like to visit
within easy reach of Limoges.
About 15 miles away is the village of Oradour-
Sur-Glane. The village has been conserved as a
memorial to its inhabitants who lost their lives
during the Second World War and still stands
as the soldiers left it long ago. There are buses
from Limoges to Oradour.
Less than 30 miles to the west of Limoges is
the very att ractive walled town of Rochechouart,
which is worth visiting if you’re exploring the
area. Nearby at Chassenon you can see the
Roman Baths, where there are some original
fl oor tiles and the intricate piping system which
is well worth seeing. You should fi nd numerous
places of interest to enjoy on your holiday break
in this beautiful area of France.
Bergerac
SITUATED on the River Dordogne, Bergerac
has made its name as a historic gem. With
some of France’s most signifi cant historic
sites, the idyllic town is the perfect place
for those looking to relive the past whilst
enjoying the comfort of present day amenities.
A pocket of beauty located in a goldmine of
historic sites, Bergerac has enough fi ne wines,
delicate cuisine and stimulating adventures to
keep anyone entertained.
Set within half-timbered streets the famous
“Old Town” is situated north of the river.
Here, visitors will discover a beautifully
restored medieval sett lement that boasts
open air cafes, restaurants and boutique
shops. Hours can easily melt away as you
At Old Town’s heart lies the true pièce de
tastings and vineyard tours that off er a
colourful and unique insight into the region's
fi nest wines. The former monastery and
cloister hosts lively concerts throughout the
summer months before transforming into a
bustling Christmas market during December.
Nearby, the Bergerac Museum provides a
comprehensive insight into the development
of the town, ranging from its origins on
the Dordogne River to the history of the
regions lucrative wine trade. Meanwhile,
modern history enthusiasts will enjoy
the Museum of the Resistance. The small
museum honours the town’s inhabitants
Above: Chateau Monbazillac, south of Bergerac.
Left : The village of Beynac-et-Cazenac on the
banks of the River Dordogne, approximately
an hour's drive from Bergerac.
who bravely resisted German occupation
during the Second World War. Also close
to home is the National Tobacco Museum
which commemorates the importance of the
crop to the regions development. Originally
built as a hotel, the 17th century building is
regarded as one of Bergerac’s architectural
jewels. The Costi museum, opened in 2003, is
a tribute to the town’s cultural side, housing a
permanent exhibition of works by Constantin
Papachristopoulos, the late Greek sculptor.
Past meets present when visitors reach the
high town. Here you will fi nd all the features
you would expect from a contemporary town
centre with the same character and charm
that radiates from the old town. With high
street shops, hotels and newsagents this is the
place to go if you you’re looking for high end
restaurants and homely pubs.
CRUISINGNEWS
Cunard's three Queens (Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary 2) together in New York. Inset: Her Majesty The Queen.
AS WE STEAM TOWARDS 2012, SOUTHAMPTON CAN
LOOK FORWARD TO ANOTHER BUMPER YEAR OF CRUISING.
KEITH HAMILTON REPORTS.
IT WILL be a regal occasion to mark a royal
anniversary – and promises to be one of the
highlights of 2012 in Southampton.
Cunard’s fl eet of ships, Queen Mary 2, Queen
Victoria, and Queen Elizabeth, will be in the city
together for the fi rst time on Sunday, June 5 to
celebrate the monarch’s diamond jubilee.
Cunard has a long and enviable association
with the royal family, with the Queen offi cially
naming QE2 in the 1960s, QM2 on Boxing Day
2003, and then, last autumn, the company’s
newest vessel, Queen Elizabeth.
All three Queens will depart that same
evening, as Queen Elizabeth sets course for the
Baltic, Queen Victoria leaves for the Adriatic
and QM2 begins a short fi ve-night break to
Rott erdam, Zeebrugge and Le Havre before
returning to Southampton.
Meanwhile Southampton's fl eet of P&O
Cruises’ ships will celebrate the company's
175th anniversary with a record-breaking
number of voyages from the city next year.
26 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT WINTER 2011
In total the seven ships are set to undertake
almost 150 voyages, which will see more than
370,500 passengers fl ocking to the port to
embark on a cruise.
Ships including Azura, Ventura, Oriana,
Oceana, Aurora, Arcadia, and Adonia will
sail on 148 cruises beginning and ending in
Southampton, with voyages lasting anything
from a couple of days right up to 109 nights.
Oceana will be the busiest vessel during 2012
as she sails on 30 cruises from Southampton,
Azura and Oriana are not far behind operating
24 voyages each, and Ventura sets sail 21 times
from the city.
There will also be a touch of the Caribbean
about Southampton’s waterfront next year
when the city’s latest cruise ship is welcomed
to the port for the fi rst time.
Caribbean Princess is due to arrive in May
for a summer long programme of ten voyages
from Southampton. Caribbean Princess is able
to accommodate up to 3,622 passengers in
1,557 cabins, has a two-deck high theatre, three
main dining rooms, together with three other
premium restaurants, a library and casino.
At her launch the ship introduced “Movies
Under the Stars”, a giant, open-air cinema
DESTINATION REASONS TO GO TO...
REASONSTO GO TO...
Grenoble
OFTEN dubbed the capital of
the Alps, Grenoble is served
by Ski Peak and has a direct
connection (during school holidays)
with Southampton. Surrounded by
mountains and dominated by the
imposing fort of La Bastille, there
are so many things to see and do
and something for all the family.
Here are ten highlights of this
stunning and vibrant city.
Winter sports: Let’s do the obvious fi rst,
aft er all Grenoble hosted the Winter Olympics
back in 1968. Positioned at the foot of the Alps,
Grenoble is ideally located for accessing all
the French Alpine skiing resorts. Chamrousse,
Alpe d’Huez and Les Deux Alpes are the
closest but nothing is more than a couple of
hours away by car.
Walking and climbing: With three mountain
ranges (Chartreuse, Vercors and Belledonne)
close at hand, the countryside around Grenoble
is ideal for scenic mountain walks and climbing.
Pick up a free copy of the hiking map, the Carte
des Sentiers Sipavag, from the Tourist Offi ce
to help you plan your route. The peaks around
Grenoble also boast some beautiful mountain
lakes, notably the Lacs Robert and Lac Achard,
which are perfect for swimming during the
summer months. It’s also possible to fi sh,
although you do need a permit.
Exploring by bicycle: Don’t be fooled by
those mountains. Grenoble is actually one of
Europe’s fl att est cities making it perfect to get
around by pedal power. There are some great
and safe cycle routes, including a track along
the river, and dedicated cycle lanes on the
main roads. You can rent bikes from Métrovélo
which also provides cycle maps of the area.
La Bastille: No, not the Paris prison but a
19th century fortress that overlooks Grenoble
from Bastille Hill. Don’t miss the cable car ride
from near the Palais de Justice in the city centre
– it’s the quickest way and most exhilarating to
the top and off ers stunning views. It’s not for
the faint-hearted though, imagine ascending a
mountain inside a transparent egg.
Going underground: Take a free guided
tour of Les Caves de la Chartreuse, reputedly
the largest liqueur cellar in the world. This is
where the famous local liqueur is made by
Carthusian Monks. The caves are located in
the nearby city of Voiron, around 15 miles
from Grenoble, and the tour includes a tasting
session at the end.
Eating out: To experience the best that
Savoyard cuisine has to off er, pay a visit
to La Fondue where you can choose from
a huge selection of mainly cheese-based
specialties. But be sure to save some space
for pudding – the chocolate and Chartreuse
fondue is to die for. If Italian food is more
your thing, Quai Mounier on the north side
of the river lsere, is lined with pizzerias and
pasta restaurants. Café tables and chairs fl ood
many of Grenoble's squares when the weather
heats up. During the chilly winter, locals warm
themselves up with hearty servings of gratin
dauphinois, tartifl ett e and raclett e.
Party time: Like Southampton, Grenoble is
a university city. In fact it has four of them and
around 50,000 students. This ensures there is
no shortage of bars in which to enjoy a tipple
or two. There are many good bars around
Place Notre Dame, especially the London Pub
at 11 rue Brocherie which is always busy. If
that’s too crowded, try the sport pub Le Couche
Tard at 1 rue Palais or Café Notre Dame, also
popular among students. Other lively squares
worth checking out are Place St-Andre, Place
aux Herbes and Place de Gordes.
History: Learn about the area’s interesting
culture and history, which goes back to 43BC, by
visiting some of Grenoble's many museums. The
best of these include the Musée de Grenoble,
Musée Dauphinois and Musée de l'Ancien
Évêché. The former allows visitors to explore
art from the 13th to the 21st century – with
works by the likes of Matisse, Picasso, Monet,
Gaugin and Chagall – plus an impressive
collection of ancient art including Egyptian
sarcophagi and a nearly-intact mosaic. The
latt er houses the religious history of Grenoble.
Picture perfect: A visit to the Centre
National d'Art Contemporain de Grenoble
(Le Magasin) is a must see, not only for its
impressive collection of modern masterpieces,
but also for the impressive glass and steel
warehouse in which it is housed.
Shop till you drop: For good shopping,
take a bus to Place Dr Martin (yes, really) and
follow Rue de la Poste to Rue Felix Poulat and
Place Grenett e. The pedestrian streets in the
Old Town near there are lined with restaurants,
cafés, bakeries, and shops while Boulevard
Edouard Ray and Boulevard Gambett a have a
modern feel with designer shops and expensive
spas and boutiques. Victor Hugo Square
between these boulevards off ers many benches
to rest your tired feet. If you like shopping
malls, check out Grand Place in Echirolles
outside the centre of Grenoble.
BREEZE THROUGH AWARDS
BREEZE THROUGHAWARDS
REWARDING
STAFF THAT
GO THE
EXTRA MILE
SOUTHAMPTON Airport aims to be the
local airport you can ‘breeze through’.
To achieve this everyone at the airport
works together to create easy, fast and friendly
experiences for our passengers. Breeze through
awards recognise and reward those who
have demonstrated exceptional commitment,
achievement and hard work. They recognise
staff that have gone over and above what is
expected of them to make a real diff erence to
passengers, colleagues or the airport as a whole.
In July, Dave Brazier from Meteor won
the top award. He was nominated multiple
times for his friendly approach to staff and
passengers. One nominee described him
as a magnifi cent character who regularly
brings ray of sunshine to your day by being
the friendliest, happiest, and most pleasant
person one could ever hope to meet at an
airport. He always has a good word, always
smiles and chats with you, waves goodbye
when he sees you drive off and even shares
his sweets! A local BBC Radio Solent presenter
recently travelled through the airport and
was impressed with Dave who parked his bus
to help a passenger with exceptionally large
baggage. The presenter’s car then subsequently
suff ered a fl at batt ery and Dave helped to call
for assistance, and even bought the passenger
a Costa Coff ee to keep him warm whilst he
waited for the AA.
August’s award went to Airport Ambassador,
Barbara Houghton, who received numerous
compliments from passengers regarding
her exceptional service levels. One example
includes a passenger who was delayed by
a local traffi c accident. Barbara ensured the
passenger and their luggage were boarded just
in time for their fl ight.
In September, Tommy Waterman from TTT
Moneycorp scooped the top award for his
care and assistance with a confused elderly
passenger. The passenger didn’t understand
how to use ATM machines, so Tommy helped
the customer access his required money using
several cards (as he needed more than his
daily limit). The customer then thought he
had missed his fl ight, so Tommy found out the
fl ight details and personally took him through
security to ensure he caught his fl ight to Jersey
in good time. The customer was absolutely
delighted with the help he received.
1 The Guards Museum
This fascinating museum, opened in 1988, tells
the story of the fi ve Foot Guard Regiments
of the Household Division. These are the
Guards that protect the Queen and perform
the Changing of the Guard ceremony daily
outside Buckingham Palace. You can dress up
in a guards tunic and bearskin cap and have
your photo taken as a souvenir. For a small fee
they print the photo and give you a certifi cate
to take home. The tunics have been altered
to child sizes by a military tailor, who just
happens to work at the museum, so are the real
COMMUNITYNEWS
Southampton Airport set up a
strategic partnership with Bitterne
Park School in Southampton
in 2004. Each year, the 1,500
students take part in around 20
different initiatives with the airport
which includes; work experience,
a School Governor, business case
studies, joint fundraising, careers
events, and supporting enterprise
initiatives to name a few.
Robyn Myers, a current fi nal
year student at the school,
shares her experience of how
her team established a new
school shop with support from
Southampton Airport.
EACH year, students have the opportunity
to apply to become members of Bitt erne
Park School’s Young Enterprise Group.
Our aim was to set up a school shop that was
run “by students, for students”. The chosen
team created a business plan, developing their
business knowledge and learning personal
skills such as patience and commitment. Our
team went forward to present their proposal
to the school’s Head Teacher. The feedback
we gained gave us challenging targets for
improvement and a year later, the polished
business plan was accepted.
Using funding from Southampton Airport’s
Community Panel, work began on the design
of the shop almost immediately, and soon it
was furnished and ready to trade. All that
was left now was purchasing stock, which
included bott led drinks and snacks, as well
as stationary and fair-trade school polo shirts.
We used our creativity to build up additional
funds for stock by selling shares in the shop.
With these investments, the team budgeted
for stock, and soon received the fi rst orders.
Sales profi ts were high and the group found
new ways of keeping our operating costs
low. However, trading was not without its
issues, for example we were let down by
suppliers and some product sales were lower
Do you have a community project needing support from Southampton Airport?
Southampton Airport has a dedicated charity
panel providing a helping hand to local
community projects. More than £30,000 is
invested a year in a variety of projects focused
then anticipated. However, like experienced
business leaders we rose to the challenge
and were able to resolve these issues through
sourcing new suppliers and improving
marketing, resulting in increased sales,
incomes and profi t margins.
Our team also entered the “Young
Enterprise” scheme, an enterprise
competition, judging the work of young
entrepreneurs across the world, and were
short-listed for the Southampton Finals.
The BPS Shop team won the “Best Stand”
and “Overall Winner” awards and went
forward to represent Southampton in the
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Finals. The events
enabled our team to expand our knowledge
of business even further and even plant
some new ideas too.
In running this enterprise it is safe to say
that we have developed our understanding
of running a business, developed news skills
and made some great friends too. Looking
ahead, we are building plans to leave a
“legacy” to the school of a successful and
commercially viable enterprise. To ensure
the BPS Shop continues trading we have
trained a new team who will take over the
shop and become successful entrepreneurs
in the future too.
on the environment, education and training for
14 – 21 year olds.
