Member Happenings Surprises from the Sea Conservancy Divers’ Thermograph Project Results from the Catalina Conservancy Divers’ Thermograph project are now becoming available and show many surprising features. For over ten years, the divers have maintained an array of underwater thermographs, the devices that record temperature at various locations and depths around the island. Ongoing studies include the analysis of seasonal and long-term temperature trend variations, how temperature changes with depth, short-term fluctuations and the differences in temperature between various locations about Santa Catalina. The thermograph project is executed entirely by volunteers. Thermographs are purchased by the CCD and housed in structures built by CCD members. Divers, often taken to the instrument locations by Marineros, periodically download data from the sensors and replace them when needed. The retrieved data are organized and stored on CD-ROM and distributed to volunteers trained in data analysis. Unexpected results found so far include the so-called “March effect,” a mysterious, sudden, temporary, warming of water occurring at all depths around the island. Another surprise is that the seasonal temperature variations change with depth; the average maximum temperature at 15 ft occurs at the end of August, but at 100 ft the maximum average occurs at the beginning of October. Research conducted by Catalina Conservancy Divers provides invaluable information about the ocean that surrounds the island. One of the biggest surprises was discovering large, rapid temperature variations found at deeper depths. Shorter-term variations, those that occur daily or even as frequently as every 5 hours, are produced by the flow of water masses of differing temperature and are related in a complicated manner to the tides. One of the tough problems is to unravel the temperature data to determine these flow patterns. Such rapid variations as seen in the CCD data are rarely found in other thermograph arrays outside the island. Scientists suspect that rapid variations in temperature, such as those measured by the CCD thermographs, play a significant part in near-shore marine biology. In the past, researchers have used temperature studies on the island to compute the availability of nutrients for giant kelp growth and the dispersal of larvae such as those of kelp bass. The latest data will help us to characterize and better understand the marine environment of Santa Catalina Island. Craig Gelpi Catalina Conservancy Divers Bravo, Good Job!!
