What to bringAlthough the weather on Santa Catalina is usually mild, it can vary quite a bit. It can be cool and foggy, hot andsometimes windy. It is best to dress in layers so that you are comfortable while working. A heavy jacket andwindbreaker is helpful when it is cold and the winds pick up. Rain gear is strongly recommended during the wintermonths (it is better to be safe than sorry). Do not bring clothes that you do not wish to get soiled. Some of the plantextracts leave permanent stains on clothing. Long sleeves and long pants will help protect from spiny plants andpoison oak. Hiking boots are a necessity. You will be much more comfortable and secure if you use them overtennis shoes. Bring the following to make your stay more enjoyable. Great attitude and willingness to work Sleeping bag and pillow Breakfast, lunch, and dinner groceries Water bottle (at least 32 oz) Layered clothing (rain gear) Heavy coat and mittens (it can get cold) Hiking boots Daypack (fanny pack) to carry your lunch Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and lip balm Towel and bath essentials Flashlight or headlamp Medications/allergy relief Camera and film Reading material and games Money for food/souvenirs in Avalon Swimsuit (not required, but nice to have) Binoculars (not required, but nice to have)What NOT to BringTo reduce the risk of introducing nonnative plant species to Catalina Island, hiking boots/shoes and tents must be free of mud or soil and plant seed. The camp facilities arecomplete in that additional stoves, lanterns and chairs are not required. Mountain bikes arerestricted by permit. Time constraints and vehicle space does not allow for their use duringyour visit. Firearms and illegal substances are strictly prohibited at all times.

Typical Volunteer ProjectsVolunteer projects are chosen for groups based on several factors: the time of the year as thesecan vary according to seasonal conditions, and a group's abilities, age and skill, level. Below is a listof some of the projects offered by the Catalina Island Conservancy.Nurture the Natives ~ The Native Plant Nursery collects its seeds from the island's native vegetation. Plantsgrown from these seeds are used for restoration projects such as outplantings in disturbed habitats and the MiddleCanyon Hayfield Restoration project. While working at the Nursery, projects might include collecting andprocessing native seeds, transplanting plants, light construction, assembling equipment and nursery groundsmaintenance.Fence Removal ~ There are approximately 40 miles of old, decaying fence lines still visible on theisland from the ranching days on Catalina. This project offers scenic vistas and visible results asthe landscape opens up with each section of removed fence line.Build Fence Exclosures ~ With the presence of nonnative animals on the island, it is necessary toprotect rare and endangered habitats from being browsed and trampled. Volunteers buildtemporary fence exclosures so sensitive habitats can be monitored without being browsed, trampled, or uprooted. These areas are closely monitored for seedling success and overall health ofthe plant communities.Non-native Plant Removal ~ One of the island's greatest threats is the introduction of nonnative, invasive plant species. Non-native vegetation has a competitive edge over island endemicplants, out-competing them for light, nutrients space and water. Non-native plants threaten thebiodiversity of Catalina’s unique plant communities.Island Maintenance ~ The Volunteer Camp, interpretive hiking trails and Conservancy operatedfacilities, need seasonal maintenance with some painting and light construction. It is rewarding toknow you are an integral part of maintaining these sites.Restore Native Habitats ~ To determine the lack of young oak trees regenerating on CatalinaIsland, the Ecological Restoration Department is moving forward on its Oak Limitation Trial. Inthe initial phase of this project 15 fence exclosures were constructed on the Channel Side of theisland. Approximately 40,000 acorns will be planted at 4,400 sites at these fences. We will needindividuals to monitor the seedling’s growth and to assist with weed removal. This study willprovide researchers with further information on the factors affecting oak survivorship (e.g.,effect of deer predation, and weed competition) in addition to the findings gathered from ourMiddle Canyon Hayfields Restoration program.
