Dear friends,<br />

In February, our interviewers convened to select the<br />

20th class of <strong>Loran</strong> scholars. In doing so in the midst<br />

of a challenging recession, we were reminded of the<br />

importance of investing in young Canadians who<br />

show potential as leaders of integrity, who are willing<br />

to stand up to peer pressure, and who are committed<br />

to serving their communities.<br />

David Crombie, chair of national selections from<br />

1990-2000, is a fine example of such a leader. During<br />

his keynote address at dinner, David drew on his<br />

experiences in public life and reflected on the importance<br />

of leadership. An outstanding interviewer,<br />

he is featured in the video we produced to mark our<br />

20th anniversary and presented at the national selections<br />

dinner. The 12-minute video is available at<br />

www.loranaward.ca/video.<br />

The prospectus you would have received a few weeks<br />

ago describes the broad outlines of our disciplined<br />

growth over the past 20 years. The reach of the program<br />

is wider, the universities available to scholars<br />

are greater in number, the summer and mentoring<br />

programs are more fully developed, the <strong>Loran</strong> <strong>Award</strong>s<br />

community is larger and increasingly connected, and<br />

the number of past scholars has increased to 249, up<br />

70% from just five years ago.<br />

Beyond our aggregate numbers, we are encouraged<br />

that the early classes of <strong>Loran</strong> scholars are setting an<br />

excellent example for the classes that have followed<br />

them. They continue to take on significant leadership<br />

responsibilities both at work and in service to the<br />

community, they are engaged in the ongoing work<br />

of the foundation and they are becoming financial<br />

supporters themselves.<br />

We have carefully controlled costs as we have grown<br />

the program. We have been able to do so, in part, because<br />

of long-standing and new partners that provide<br />

in-kind support. First and foremost, our partner uni-<br />

versities grant tuition waivers to match the stipends<br />

scholars receive and provide institutional representatives<br />

on campus. A few notable examples of in-kind<br />

support: Friesens prints and mails the application<br />

form nationwide; BMO Financial Group hosts national<br />

selections at the IFL; WestJet and several individuals<br />

donate flights for finalists and scholars; EDGE<br />

Imaging and Mischa Bartkow (Weston <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

’99) provide photography; and Torys LLP provides<br />

pro bono legal work and hosts our annual winetasting.<br />

This in-kind support has helped us to leverage<br />

the donations we receive from individuals, companies<br />

and foundations.<br />

Since the <strong>Loran</strong> <strong>Award</strong>s program relies on annual<br />

donations, the upcoming year will be a challenging<br />

one. Fortunately, our volunteers and supporters continue<br />

to be willing to give their own money and to ask<br />

others to do the same. In the past year, we have welcomed<br />

several new directors: Mary Ann Finn, partner<br />

at Deloitte; Rosemarie McClean, SVP at the Ontario<br />

Teachers Pension Plan; Bill Morneau, Chairman &<br />

CEO, Morneau Sobeco; and Susan Scace, President<br />

of the Henry White Kinnear Foundation. With the renewed<br />

support of our donors, and the support of new<br />

ones, we expect to maintain the essential aspects of<br />

our current program.<br />

As one of the members of the first class of <strong>Loran</strong><br />

scholars, I have had the privilege of getting to know<br />

the nearly 400 scholars supported over the years, the<br />

volunteers and supporters who built the organization<br />

and those who sustain and enable its future growth.<br />

It is an amazing network of people committed to<br />

the shared goal of making our communities and our<br />

country better through investing in young Canadians<br />

who show potential for leadership. During good<br />

times and bad, ours remains a noble and important<br />

purpose. Thank you for your continued support.


<strong>THE</strong> 2009 CLASS OF LORAN SCHOLARS<br />

On 13 & 14 February, six committees of volunteers and our three national co-chairs selected 30 <strong>Loran</strong> scholars from a group of 71 finalists. Once again,<br />

BMO Financial Group graciously hosted the interviews at its Institute for Learning. The class of 2009 is listed below.<br />

Erica Baker <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Denis Morris Catholic High School, Thorold, ON<br />

Erica created a Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee to empower young<br />

people and organize activities for them. She is president of the student<br />

council and the Young Green Party of Niagara. Last year, Erica travelled to<br />

Guatemala with Wells of Hope to build a house for a local family.<br />

Talitha Calder <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

W C Miller Collegiate, Altona, MB<br />

As leader of the student council, Talitha helped to beautify her school by<br />

spearheading a landscaping project. She plays trombone for the school<br />

band and is member of several school choirs. Her other commitments<br />

include leading the school’s Amnesty International chapter and Youth in<br />

Philanthropy group and being a youth representative on the town council.<br />

Joanne Cave Weston <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Salisbury Composite High School, Sherwood Park, AB<br />

Joanne founded her own nonprofit organization, Ophelia’s Voice, in<br />

2004. She facilitates workshops throughout Alberta to promote healthy<br />

body image and self-esteem for young adolescent girls. To date she has<br />

facilitated over 100 workshop hours for 400 young women. She heads the<br />

community youth council and is the Edmonton chair for the UNESCO youth<br />

advisory group.<br />

Sophie Côté <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Collège François-Xavier-Garneau, Quebec, QC<br />

Sophie serves as vice-president of her CEGEP’s co-op and head of the<br />

school’s UNICEF committee. In 2007, she helped to create a month-long<br />

exhibition about child soldiers. She served as captain of the Quebec under-<br />

19 women’s rugby team and also plays for her CEGEP. Sophie visited Peru<br />

for a humanitarian project.<br />

Max Deschner Weston <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Kelowna Senior Secondary School, Kelowna, BC<br />

Max has volunteered for the Salvation Army as a Christmas Kettle<br />

supervisor and also helped out in a soup kitchen. He plays lacrosse and<br />

has helped to coach younger kids for the past few years. He is currently<br />

undertaking a Rotary exchange to France.<br />

Lindsey Doehle Weston <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Lester B Pearson United World College Of The Pacific, Fort Good Hope, NWT<br />

Lindsey took a gap year to run a youth recreation program for the Frontiers<br />

Foundation in Fort Good Hope, Northwest Territories. Lindsey has served as<br />

a Big Sister and fundraised for an owl rehabilitation centre. She plays the<br />

violin, kayaks and is learning three languages.<br />

Juliette Dupré <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Lester B Pearson United World College Of The Pacific, St Lawrence, NL<br />

As gunnery divisional petty officer of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets,<br />

Juliette trains and looks after 25 cadets. She also serves on the<br />

Newfoundland Labrador Youth Council. At school, she runs cross-country<br />

and is a leader in the Model U.N. and debating club.<br />

Danya Dziedzic Weston <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Inwood School, Inwood, MB<br />

Danya is editor of her school paper and serves as president of her local<br />

4-H club. She also founded and runs an organization that engages youth<br />

as volunteers in the community. She also volunteers with the local seniors’<br />

lodge.<br />

Peter Guo Weston <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic High School, Guelph, ON<br />

Peter is a leader of his school’s robotics team, which competed at the 2008<br />

Robotics World Championships in Atlanta. He runs triathlons, is captain<br />

of the cross-country team and is on the track and field and badminton<br />

teams. Peter is a social justice league member and spearheaded a<br />

Thanksgiving food drive in his community.<br />

Tyler Heal Weston <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Sir John Franklin High School, Yellowknife, NWT<br />

Tyler volunteers with the Northwest Territories Mining Heritage Society and<br />

the Historica Foundation. He has put his knowledge to work by researching<br />

and writing a book about Yellowknife’s street names. His graphic designs<br />

won him silver and bronze medals in a national Skills Canada competition.<br />

Tyler also plays tenor saxophone in several bands.<br />

James Hoffman Weston <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Ross Sheppard High School, Edmonton, AB<br />

With the Edmonton Centennial Interact junior rotary club, James coordinated<br />

an education project in Belize. At his school, he has held several<br />

positions in the student union. James founded a robotics team that has<br />

competed internationally. He also volunteers as a university physics lab<br />

assistant and plays tenor sax for the school jazz band.<br />

Hannah Holden Weston <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Nakusp Secondary School, Nakusp, BC<br />

Hannah has supported and mentored her peers by promoting community<br />

involvement as co-president of the Rotary Interact Club and teaching at a<br />

music school. Her civic contributions include serving on the Arrow Lakes<br />

Art Council and volunteering for the local hospital and church. She is a<br />

member of three school sports teams and plays the piano and violin.<br />

Constance Holman Weston <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Colonel Gray Senior High School, Charlottetown, PE<br />

Constance competed in the Canada Winter Games as a speed skater<br />

and also plays rugby. She started a peer education music program at<br />

her school, through which the students play jazz for seniors. She has also<br />

served as an ESL tutor for newcomers to PEI. Constance is currently on a<br />

Rotary exchange to Thailand.<br />

Ellie Jin BMO Capital Markets <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

St Elzabeth Catholic High School, North York, ON<br />

Ellie provides positive support for at-risk youth as a mentor with the<br />

Youth Assisting Youth program and by volunteering at the Eva’s Phoenix<br />

shelter. She is an organizer for the Delisle Youth Gallery art exhibition and<br />

is curator of the school arts council.<br />

Alison Lee Redknee <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute, North York, ON<br />

During Earth Week, Alison ran a multi-school clean up of several local<br />

parks. She is also president of her school’s environmental club and was<br />

a gold medalist at the 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair. She is captain of<br />

her soccer and hockey teams, swims and plays the flute.<br />

Marin MacLeod Young Fund <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Northumberland Regional High School, Pictou County, NS<br />

Marin is co-captain of her school and provincial rugby teams; she also<br />

plays soccer. She heads her school’s local Interact club and volunteers<br />

at her local soup kitchen and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. She also<br />

plays piano and received a Gold Duke of Edinburgh award.<br />

Katie Mattina Weston <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

McKinnon Park Secondary School, Caledonia, ON<br />

As a peer leader with the Fresh Heir group, Katie has helped to educate<br />

younger students about the health risks of smoking. She promotes a safe<br />

school environment as president of a local Crimestoppers. Katie plays for<br />

three school teams and plays flute in the band.<br />

Jessica McCuaig <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Peterborough Collegiate & Vocational School, Peterborough, ON<br />

Jessica coordinated a day of action at her school about poverty in Ontario,<br />

which involved organizing a rally, fast, and food drive. She was editor of<br />

the school yearbook, chair of the student arts council, and a founder of a<br />

United Way Youth Advisory Council.<br />

Meagan McLavish <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School, Red Deer, AB<br />

At school, Meagan is student council president and a “Link Crew” leader,<br />

helping to ease Grade 9 students’ transition to high school. She has<br />

volunteered for a therapeutic riding program for special needs children<br />

and organized a city-wide barbecue for the homeless. She plays piano<br />

and is fully bilingual.<br />

Peter O’Rielly Weston <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

St. Gabriel’s All Grade, St. Brendan’s, NL<br />

Frustrated by the lack of sports facilities in his small community, Peter<br />

built a tennis court, which he has maintained for five years. He runs a<br />

recycling program at school and serves as a math and physics tutor. Peter<br />

also painted a two-metre mural as a memorial to a former teacher.<br />

Divya Pahwa <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Walter Murray Collegiate Institute, Saskatoon, SK<br />

Divya is is the head of the environmental club and captained a team<br />

in a school science competition. She volunteers with individuals with<br />

disabilities and is co-editor of the school paper. She also raises money<br />

for Kids Help Phone.<br />

Lindsey Richardson <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Summerland Secondary School, Summerland, BC<br />

In Grade 10, Lindsey founded a program that provides backpacks and<br />

supplies to students in need. She ran a talent show that generated<br />

$20,000 for relief in China, and took part in a 60-kilometre walk for a<br />

Weekend to End Breast Cancer. She is on the volleyball team and plays<br />

the piano.<br />

Michael Rolfe Weston <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Indian River High School, Springdale, NL<br />

Michael is captain of four school sports team. He also plays and coaches<br />

both hockey and soccer, helping to develop the skills of youth of various<br />

ages. Michael’s other interests include playing tuba for the school band<br />

and student politics. He has taken part in the Shad Valley program.<br />

Alexandra Schwabe <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, Sudbury, ON<br />

Alexandra serves as both a student trustee on the school board and chair<br />

of the student senate. With the latter, she helped organize a conference<br />

intended for at-risk students. She plays basketball, rows for the school<br />

team, runs the environmental club and teaches Sunday School.<br />

Marc-André Simard Weston <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

École Secondaire MacDonald-Cartier, Chelmsford, ON<br />

Marc-André promotes francophone culture among his peers as vicepresident<br />

of the Federation of Franco-Ontarian Youth. He also acts and<br />

writes with a local drama troupe. He is vice-president of his school’s<br />

athletic association.<br />

Feodor Snagovsky KPMG <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

William Lyon Mackenize King Collegiate, North York, ON<br />

Feodor is the executive director of a solar and wind energy initiative that<br />

promotes sustainable energy in Toronto-area schools. Feodor is also keen<br />

on acting and public speaking and has served as a co-captain and coach<br />

of wrestling teams at his school.<br />

Tanya Taggart-Hodge Weston <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

L’École Victor Brodeur, Victoria, BC<br />

Tanya has captained and coached a number of teams at school, including<br />

soccer, basketball, and volleyball. She was a jury member at the Rimouski<br />

International Youth Film Festival and produced a short film about her<br />

school. Tanya has raised funds to cover her costs for a scientific voyage<br />

to Antarctica.<br />

Wesley Taylor Weston <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Lord Dorchester Secondary School, Dorchester, ON<br />

Last summer, Wesley embarked on a self-funded volunteer trip to Ecuador,<br />

where he helped build a school for Grade 3 and 4 students. He heads the<br />

school’s global issues club, teaches swimming and volunteers with the<br />

local Boys and Girls Club. He plays volleyball and is a downhill bike racer<br />

and long-distance canoe-tripper.<br />

Ryan Thom BMO <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Sir Winston Churchill Secondray, Vancouver, BC<br />

Ryan started a Gay-Straight Alliance at his school and later expanded it<br />

into a city-wide network. He is also on the executive of his yearbook club<br />

and helped to organize a conference aimed at educating youth about the<br />

role of the municipal government. Ryan plays clarinet with the Vancouver<br />

Youth Symphony Orchestra.<br />

Justine Zwicker Dominion <strong>Loran</strong> scholar<br />

Lockview High School, Fletchers Lake, NS<br />

Justine started up a volunteer group at her school to make students more<br />

active in the community, and she has served as charity representative on<br />

the student council, initiating fundraisers for several causes. She is on<br />

the Reach for the Top team and mentors a grade six girl.<br />

million in cumulative giving<br />

In the past four years, through the proceeds of its Equity<br />

Through Education initiative, BMO Capital Markets has<br />

funded 12 BMO Capital Markets <strong>Loran</strong> scholars.<br />

Equity Through Education is a charitable initiative aimed at<br />

creating a more diverse workplace by offering support to help<br />

people realize their educational ambitions by giving them<br />

opportunities they might not otherwise have.<br />

Once each year, all North American institutional equity<br />

trading commissions are donated to organizations dedicated<br />

to the education of bright and deserving individuals. Over<br />

the past four years, this intiative has generated more than<br />

$950,000 in support of the <strong>Loran</strong> <strong>Award</strong>s.<br />

At our annual winetasting, we thanked and recognized Mike<br />

Miller, BMO Capital Markets Executive Managing Director,<br />

Head of Equity Products, for this remarkable investment in<br />

young Canadians who show potential for leadership. Bravo!<br />
