Dear friends,
In February, our interviewers convened to select the
20th class of Loran scholars. In doing so in the midst
of a challenging recession, we were reminded of the
importance of investing in young Canadians who
show potential as leaders of integrity, who are willing
to stand up to peer pressure, and who are committed
to serving their communities.
David Crombie, chair of national selections from
1990-2000, is a fine example of such a leader. During
his keynote address at dinner, David drew on his
experiences in public life and reflected on the importance
of leadership. An outstanding interviewer,
he is featured in the video we produced to mark our
20th anniversary and presented at the national selections
dinner. The 12-minute video is available at
www.loranaward.ca/video.
The prospectus you would have received a few weeks
ago describes the broad outlines of our disciplined
growth over the past 20 years. The reach of the program
is wider, the universities available to scholars
are greater in number, the summer and mentoring
programs are more fully developed, the Loran Awards
community is larger and increasingly connected, and
the number of past scholars has increased to 249, up
70% from just five years ago.
Beyond our aggregate numbers, we are encouraged
that the early classes of Loran scholars are setting an
excellent example for the classes that have followed
them. They continue to take on significant leadership
responsibilities both at work and in service to the
community, they are engaged in the ongoing work
of the foundation and they are becoming financial
supporters themselves.
We have carefully controlled costs as we have grown
the program. We have been able to do so, in part, because
of long-standing and new partners that provide
in-kind support. First and foremost, our partner uni-
versities grant tuition waivers to match the stipends
scholars receive and provide institutional representatives
on campus. A few notable examples of in-kind
support: Friesens prints and mails the application
form nationwide; BMO Financial Group hosts national
selections at the IFL; WestJet and several individuals
donate flights for finalists and scholars; EDGE
Imaging and Mischa Bartkow (Weston Loran scholar
’99) provide photography; and Torys LLP provides
pro bono legal work and hosts our annual winetasting.
This in-kind support has helped us to leverage
the donations we receive from individuals, companies
and foundations.
Since the Loran Awards program relies on annual
donations, the upcoming year will be a challenging
one. Fortunately, our volunteers and supporters continue
to be willing to give their own money and to ask
others to do the same. In the past year, we have welcomed
several new directors: Mary Ann Finn, partner
at Deloitte; Rosemarie McClean, SVP at the Ontario
Teachers Pension Plan; Bill Morneau, Chairman &
CEO, Morneau Sobeco; and Susan Scace, President
of the Henry White Kinnear Foundation. With the renewed
support of our donors, and the support of new
ones, we expect to maintain the essential aspects of
our current program.
As one of the members of the first class of Loran
scholars, I have had the privilege of getting to know
the nearly 400 scholars supported over the years, the
volunteers and supporters who built the organization
and those who sustain and enable its future growth.
It is an amazing network of people committed to
the shared goal of making our communities and our
country better through investing in young Canadians
who show potential for leadership. During good
times and bad, ours remains a noble and important
purpose. Thank you for your continued support.
