LADIES, be warned. Facial
fuzz is in fashion this month.
Men around the world are
growing mos for the month
of Movember — and word is,
some of them are liking the
look.
Leading the way are staff at
Bruce Gowans Toyota who
have taken up the Movember
challenge.
‘‘It is a chance for us to
have bit of fun and help a
good cause,’’ dealer principal
Adam Gowans said.
‘‘We hope to raise $5000 for
prostate cancer research.
‘‘Most of us have been
affected through family,
friends or colleagues, so we
wanted to do our bit through
Movember.’’
Funds raised through
Movember go to the Prostate
the national depression
Movember also helps raise
awareness of men’s health
EVER get the feeling something is missing in
your life?
Since coming to the RSCPA Devonport I have
been feeling a bit out of sorts.
I couldn’t quite put my hoof on it but then I
clicked. Oh boy, I had been given the snip.
Like all animals who are brought to the
RSPCA to be re-homed, I was desexed. Or
‘‘gelded’’ in my case.
Look don’t get me wrong, I know it is
important and responsible pet ownership, but
crikey what harm was a little bloke like me
going to do?
Oh sure, I am popular with the ladies, well at
least I was before this happened.
The staff here have told me they can’t reverse
it so it looks like I am stuck with it now. Mate,
I have got to get out of here before they
remove anything else!
Is there anyone out there looking for a pet or
paddock mate? My name is Xavier and I am
a two-year-old Shetland pony.
I need a home where someone has a bit of
horse sense. And some company would be
good too, another horse, pony or a goat —
even better if they are of the female variety.
I still love the ladies, you know.
By KATE JOWETT
THE Mersey Community
Hospital oncology unit will
soon be open five days a week
instead of three.
Clinical nurse manager
Anne Wilks said the hospital
was in the process of
employing an additional
oncology nurse, which would
enable the clinic to extend its
opening hours.
‘‘It will make a difference
for people who are travelling
to Burnie or the Holman
Clinic for treatment,’’ she
said.
‘‘When we are open five
days a week we can bring
some of these local people
back here.
‘‘With more staff, we can
spend more time with the
patients.’’
It is hoped that the extended
opening hours will be
effective before Christmas.
Ms Wilks said the extra two
days would not only increase
the number of people able to
utilise oncology services at
the Mersey Community
Hospital, but also provide
greater flexibility for existing
patients.
As well as the services of an
extra nurse, the oncology
unit has recently been
refurbished.
The old recliner chairs have
been replaced with seats
specifically designed for
oncology and renal patients.
There is also a new plasma
television for patients to
watch during treatment, new
infusion pumps and monitors
and a new fridge for storing
medication.
Patient Catharina
Kranenburg, who has been
visiting the clinic since 2007,
was particularly pleased with
the new chairs.
‘‘They are lovely,’’ she said.
‘‘A big improvement on the
old ones.’’
BIG IMPROVEMENT: Catharina Kranenburg will be one of many
people to benefit from extended opening hours at the recently
refurbished Mersey Community Hospital oncology unit.
Participant Lynnese Pease said
On the hunt for new home
FOUR young
greyhounds are
looking for good
homes after being
surrendered to the RSPCA
Devonport.
The playful pups are
from the same litter and
are about four-and-a-half
months old.
One of the five
greyhounds surrendered
has already been adopted,
but the remaining four
siblings are eager to find
families.
RSPCA animal attendant
Ashton Claridge said
despite being bred for
racing, greyhounds made
great family pets.
‘‘They are very easy to
train,’’ she said.
‘‘They are very gentle
and have a loving nature.
‘‘They make a great
family pet.
‘‘They would need to be
walked every day,
although they do not
require as much exercise
as you would think,
adapting easily to the
couch life.’’
PERFECT PETS: RSPCA Devonport attendants Ashton Claridge (left) and Amy Hart with the four greyhound siblings — (from left)
Minca, Jerry, Loki and Petey — which are available for adoption. Picture: Kate Jowett.
The young greyhounds
up for adoption have been
removed from the racing
register and can only be
re-homed as pets.
The staff at the RSPCA
are happy to educate
potential owners about
the breed. It is a
requirement that
greyhounds older than six
months wear a muzzle.
The greyhounds — like
all pets that are adopted
from the RSPCA — are
desexed, wormed, had at
least their first
vaccination and been
microchipped.
DEVONPORT’S Red
Centre may have
moved to its new
premises in January,
but there are no signs
the gloss is wearing
off for its staff.
‘‘It’s just divine after
the old place,’’ donor
services officer Dawn
Gillam said.
Donors can now
give blood from the
comfort of new hightech
chairs.
‘‘Now we can
process up to 34
donations a day,’’
staff member Chris
Johns said.
‘‘We generally
average about 20
people.
‘‘Our best day was
30 donors.’’
The premises are
not the only thing to
have changed, with
new donor forms also
introduced in
September.
The new forms are
designed to further
ensure the safety of
the blood supply.
People under 40 can
The nurses at Red
backgrounds, but all
agree they enjoy
working with healthy
and generous
‘‘patients’’.
They say they
appreciate the efforts
of the unsung heroes
— donors who give
blood every three
months and those
who can give plasma
every two weeks.
The staff know most
regular donors by
name and encourage
them to ‘‘grab
something from the
fridge’’ after their
donation.
‘‘We had a young
bloke come in a
couple of weeks ago
who was a multiple
donor,’’ staff member
Bron King said.
‘‘He gave blood and
plasma, was a
registered bone
marrow and organ
donor, and had
already arranged to
leave his body to
ACTUAL TESTIMONIAL FROM APRIL ‘08 SEMINAR
“I recently attended a Charles Borden seminar to lose
some weight. I must admit, initially, I attended primarily
out of curiosity. I had never been hypnotized and wanted
to see how it could help me. I found his seminar to be
very moving! I’ve since lost signifi cant weight. I’m wearing
clothes that hadn’t fi t comfortably for many years.
To say that Charles’ seminar and CD has helped me
lose weight would be an understatement. In addition to
reduced weight I am also experiencing a tremendous
urge for increased physical activity, less stress, and most
importantly … a more positive outlook
on life and feeling of accomplishment.”
Preparation
secret to a
safe summer
By CERI DAVIES
WHILE most of us
welcome the idea of hot
summer days, for Jodi
Armstrong it is a real
worry.
Jodi is the senior station
officer for the Tasmania
Fire Service in Devonport
and Burnie.
‘‘If people start preparing
now, it is less likely they
will have problems later,’’
Jodi said.
‘‘If they watch the DVD
we distribute, cut back
scrub near their homes
and clear out the gutters,
they are halfway there.’’
The TFS works closely
with schools and
community groups to get
the fire safety message out.
‘‘Everybody in a bushfire
area should have a kit
ready to go,’’ Jodi said.
‘‘They should have hose
Plan ahead to beat fire risk
HAPPY TO HELP: Tasmania Fire Service volunteer Tony Perry (left) and senior station officer for
Devonport and Burnie, Jodi Armstrong. The TFS is happy to help home owners make sure their
properties are in shape to survive the approaching fire season. Picture: Ceri Davies.
fittings on inside taps,
probably laundry taps.
‘‘They need sturdy
footwear, clothes and
headgear, goggles and
water to drink.
‘‘If they are fit and
healthy they should plan
to stay and fight any fires
near their home, but that
only works if the home is
prepared.
‘‘If you are going to
relocate, you need to
decide early, but the
reality is, if you fight to
protect your property, you
will probably save your
house — providing it is
prepared.’’
Some ways to prepare
include looking at the
vegetation in your garden.
Volatile natives should
be further from the house
and fine litter (bark and
dry leaves) needs to be
raked up and removed.
Jodi said it was also
essential that everyone
abided by fire permit
periods and conditions.
‘‘One of the most
important changes many
people are unaware of is
that all burning off is now
prohibited on blocks of
less than 2000sq m,’’ he
said.
‘‘We are happy to visit
and give advice and
provide a site assessment.
‘‘We can help plan and
give you the right
information, including
checking for clear
identification at the front
of a home.
‘‘In a fire we perform
structural triage — we see
which houses are prepared
and can be defended by the
owner, which are mainly
prepared and need support
from firies and which are
undefendable.
‘‘Make sure yours is not
undefendable.’’
Brigade volunteer driven
by thirst for knowledge
FOR almost 20 years,
Tony Perry has been
part of the backbone of
the Tasmania Fire Service.
He has been a volunteer
firefighter with the Sassafras
brigade for 19 years and he
recently joined as a volunteer
in Devonport too.
Tony said he became a
volunteer to give something
back to his community.
‘‘But it was also because a
fire went through and I didn’t
know what to do,’’ he said.
‘‘I wanted to know the right
things to do so I joined as a
volunteer.’’
TFS senior station officer
Jodi Armstrong said there
was often an increase in
volunteer applications after a
fire.
‘‘Many people want to help
but do not possess the
training or knowledge to be
effective,’’ he said.
‘‘Volunteers are highly
valued and receive ongoing
mentoring and training.’’
Volunteers undergo an
assessment process and must
be fit and healthy.
They need to be at least 17
years old and there is no
upper age limit.
Many Tasmanian volunteers
have specialist knowledge of
fighting fires in remote areas,
in our own backyard
PADDOCK
TO PLATE
By CERI DAVIES
AVOCADO trees at
Spreyton are an unusual
sight, but Dick Shaw has
been growing them since
1995.
In addition to his 100 or so
avocado trees, he also has
more than 50 tamarillo
trees, which look as if they
are decorated with
Christmas ornaments.
‘‘We didn’t want to be
slaves to an empty
paddock,’’ Dick said.
‘‘We’d spent most of our
lives in the tropics, in
Africa, Fiji, PNG and
northern Australia.
‘‘We wanted to find a
niche market.
‘‘I was sure we could grow
avocados here.’’
He certainly could.
In a north-east facing
paddock, the avocados are
laden with fruit and
flowers.
Dick grows Haas, Reed,
Sharwil and Bacon
varieties of avocados.
‘‘Avocados and tamarillos
both grow in mountain
areas,’’ he said.
‘‘Tamarillos grow at over
6000 feet.
‘‘They can cope with frost,
especially once they’re
established.
‘‘They grow more slowly
here than in the tropics,
but slightly dwarfed trees
make it easier to pick the
fruit.’’
Dick mainly sells his
avocados to restaurants.
‘‘They are sought after
because they haven’t been
either chilled or gassed,
which much of the fruit
transported to Tasmania
has been,’’ he said.
‘‘We’re still increasing
production, but last year
was down because of the
drought.
‘‘We were selling our
tamarillos to one of the
large supermarket chains,
but the dry weather has
meant this year’s crop isn’t
up to standard.’’
Dick said the Tasmaniangrown
avocados have a
particularly intense
flavour.
Local insects love to
pollinate the flowers, but
luckily, few local animals
eat the tropical fruits.
‘‘We had trouble with one
possum who developed a
REMARKABLE: Coastal gardener Dick Shaw proudly shows off his tropical fruit trees which,
incredibly, are flourishing in his Spreyton garden.
SUBLIME: The Shaws’ heavily laden avocado trees, which defy
the assumption that tropical fruit can’t do well in Tasmania. The
Shaws grow the Haas, Reed, Sharwil and Bacon varieties.
Fry a diced rasher of bacon until
crisp, place in a bowl with a little
balsamic vinegar and mix.
Leave to sit for a moment.
Cut a thick slice of fresh Vienna
loaf and place half an avocado on
the bread.
Place bacon on top of avocado
and sprinkle with a little more
balsamic.
Bon appetit. Serves one.
taste for the exotic but that
ended when he was hit by a
car,’’ he said.
Dick said he loved the
equable climate of the
North-West Coast.
‘‘You can grow anything
here,’’ he said.
‘‘Mediterranean crops,
high-altitude tropical
crops.
‘‘Sometimes you have to
shelter them when they are
young.’’
His garden also boasts
lemonade trees laden with
Avocado, bacon and balsamic
fruit and many plants
usually seen only indoors,
such as monstera, China
doll and umbrella trees.
He even has a banana
tree.
‘‘In the tropics it takes
eight to 10 months to grow
and fruit (bananas).
‘‘Here it takes three years
— and just as the bananas
form, they get hit by frost,’’
he laughed.
The tamarillos are
usually harvested over five
months, from June or July
RIPE: These gorgeous
tamarillos are thriving in the
Shaws’ Spreyton garden.
until November.
The avocados are
harvested three times a
week, from the end of
November until about
Easter.
Dick’s favourite way of
eating an avocado is au
naturel, but he also
suggests avocado served
with bacon and balsamic.
‘‘I love eating avos,’’ he
said.
‘‘But this year, I’ll
probably have to turn the
tamarillos into wine.’’
UNWIND
Rare catch to become an attraction
ARECENT capture
by local fisherman
Les Sims, of a rare
albino short-finned eel
was very interesting and
it provides an opportunity
to have a closer look at
these much-maligned but
fascinating native fish.
Les has been catching
eels commercially for
many years now — for
live export and smoked
products.
He can catch up to
17 tons per year and for a
fish that has an average
weight of 750 grams, he
has seen a lot of eels!
Most are taken from
farm dams along the
coast, with specially made
fyke nets which the eels
can enter but find it
difficult to escape from.
No other fish are caught
in these nets, due to
screens placed in front of
them, and most farmers
are happy for the eels to
be caught as they can
cause problems with
irrigation equipment and
they prey on stocked fish
such as small trout.
In the past, he has also
assisted the Inland
Fisheries Service in
surveying stocks of
migrating elvers (juvenile
eels) and whitebait with
similarly designed nets.
A few weeks ago Les
captured his second ever
albino eel in the Mersey
River. His first was back
in 1976, caught from the
Tamar River.
I visited Les’s home
where he was holding the
eel in a large tank and the
first thing I noticed was
its vivid colour.
Expecting a pale white
fish I was surprised to
find it was a bright yellow
colour that was strikingly
different from the
standard colouration.
The fact that this eel had
grown to full maturity is
amazing as its colour
makes it stand out in the
water. It has done a
terrific job avoiding
predators such as
cormorants and larger
fish.
Trying to scoop the eel
up out of the tank for a
photo demonstrated its
advanced evasive skills as
it proved very difficult to
handle compared to the
other eels.
There are two species of
large freshwater eels in
Tasmanian waters, the
more common shortfinned
eel and the larger
long-finned eel.
The long-finned variety
are more common in the
north east of the state and
The rare albino eel with the more common eel.
Les reported the biggest
eel he has caught was
more than 150cm long and
weighed more than 11kg.
Interestingly it was one
of four, over almost 10kg
caught at the one time in
the Mersey river about
eight years ago.
The life cycle of the
freshwater eels is quite
amazing. At about seven
years of age mature eels
under take the long
journey north to the Coral
and Arufura seas off
northern Australia where
they spawn in deep ocean
trenches before returning
to Tasmania.
The juveniles hatch and
drift south in the
plankton-rich East
Australian current where
they grow to a size that
enables them to become
self mobile and are known
as glass eels.
They begin their
migration back to their
home and transform into
elvers when they start to
resemble their adult form.
This remarkable
journey can take up to
two years for the tiny eels
to complete.
Next time you see an eel
in one of our freshwater
lakes or streams take a
moment and think where
these creatures have been
and if you are on the
mainland call in to the
Melbourne Aquarium and
you may just see an
albino short-finned eel
from the Mersey River.
Good luck and tight
lines.
■ Picking fruit. Pick
pears and lemons
when green and plums
when fully ripe. Plums,
unlike pears, never
sweeten after they are
picked.
■ Grapes. Cover
bunches of grapes
with nylon stockings
to prevent spoilage
from birds.
■ Garden hint. When
you work in the
garden, it is a good
idea to hang a
stocking containing
soap scraps near a
tap. When your hands
get dirty, you can
clean them before
going inside. The soap
will lather very well
inside the stocking.
■ Green fly on roses.
Put some chives
among your roses and
you will have less
green-fly. They do not
like their smell.
THE wedding dress we
imagined ourselves getting
married in as little girls is
probably a world away from the
wedding dress we will actually
choose as adults for our big
day.
Growing up, we come to the
realisation that our figures may
not actually suit the big, puffy
meringue creation of our
childhood dreams and that we
don’t actually have squillions of
dollars in the bank to pay for it
either.
If that’s the case, this A-Z
guide of wedding dresses
should help you find your way
again.
A—Accessories do have
to match your wedding
dress
Accessories should
complement your dress and
enhance the look that you are
going for. If you’re after elegant
and understated, you can’t go
wrong with a simple strand of
pearls. If the feel is romantic,
team your wedding dress with
antique jewellery.
B—Bridesmaid dresses
don’t have to match
your wedding dress
Although it’s still done,
matching dresses are
somewhat outdated now.
Brides often choose a
contrasting colour to their
wedding dress which is carried
throughout the wedding as the
colour theme. Why not dress
your bridesmaids in different
shades of this contrasting
colour for a modern twist.
C—Check the
workmanship of your
wedding dress
Whether you hire, buy or
make your wedding dress, you
should always check the quality
and workmanship. You don’t
want to have to deal burst
seams, falling hems and loose
beading on your wedding day.
D—Designer wedding
dresses
We would all love a Vera
Wang original, but why source
overseas for your wedding dress
when we have amazing bridal
couture on our very own
doorstep. Look out for
Australian designers like
Mariana Hardwick and Alex
Perry (who is commissioned
regularly by celebrities to create
their wedding gowns).
E—Ego in a wedding
dress
Do you want your ego
boosted or an honest opinion
when trying on wedding
dresses? Don’t take all your
gushing girlfriends with you
when you shop for your gown.
Choose one or two trusted
people who will tell you
truthfully whether the wedding
dress suits you or not.
F—Flattering wedding
dress styles
For the full-figured bride,
choose simple lines that skim
rather than hug the figure as
they are more slimming. Pearshaped
brides should consider
A-line wedding dresses as they
tend to hide the hips and
thighs. Tall, thin brides can
pretty much get away with any
style but should steer away
from straight, tight dresses as
they often produce a
matchstick.
G—Garters and
wedding dresses
Love them or hate them,
garters (and the removal of
them by single male guests
during the wedding reception)
do feature often at weddings.
As long as they don’t spoil the
line of your dress and are
hidden from the eye until the
time they are supposed to
make their appearance, there’s
no harm in continuing this fun
tradition.
H—Hiring your wedding
dress
If you’re on a tight
budget and not fussed whether
you keep your dress or not,
then hiring your wedding dress
may be the best option. Hire
companies can also outfit the
entire wedding party to take the
headache out of coordinating
the wedding attire at a fraction
of what it would cost to
purchase it all new.
I—Ivory wedding dresses
Ivory is a gorgeous colour for
wedding dresses. It’s light
enough to enable you to have a
white wedding yet dark enough
so as not to offend anyone if
you’re not quite virginal enough
to wear pure white.
J—Jewellery and your
wedding dress
They say diamonds are a
girl’s best friend but too many
of them won’t do you any
favours. A good rule of thumb
is: the fussier the wedding
dress, the simpler your
jewellery.
ADVERTISING FEATURE
your wedding dress
K—Keeping tradition
with your wedding
dress
It’s considered bad luck in
Western Cultures for the groom
to see the bride in her wedding
dress before the wedding. This
tradition nowadays has more to
do with surprising your beloved
than pandering to superstition.
L—Length of your
wedding dress
A bride’s love affair with
floor-length gowns will never
die but it may not always be an
appropriate choice. On a
sweltering summer day you
may wish you had opted for
something shorter and cooler.
M—Money on your
wedding dress
In many cultures
money is pinned on a bride’s
wedding dress. It is traditional
to place money upon the dress
of a Polish, Cuban or Greek
bride in exchange for a dance.
N—Nip, tuck and your
wedding dress
As strange as it may
sound, a trend has emerged
recently where brides opt for an
inexpensive, off-the-rack
wedding dress and spend the
thousands they have saved on
plastic surgery instead. The
reasoning behind this is that
the cosmetic surgery they have
undergone will enhance their
appearance more positively
than any dress ever could!
O—Out of your
wedding dress
After the reception,
many brides change out of their
wedding dress into a ‘‘goingaway
outfit’’ — usually a light
coloured suit or a simple shift
dress. Some brides change for
comfort, others change as a
symbol of closure to the
wedding.
P—Preserving your
wedding dress
After the wedding,
wedding dresses should be
professionally cleaned,
wrapped in acid-free tissue and
stored in a dust free, acidreduced
box to prevent mildew
and yellowing.
Q—Queenly wedding
dresses
As the undisputed queen
of the day, you may want your
wedding dress to reflect your
status. Sweeping wedding
gowns with long trains, gloves
and tiaras are popular with
royal brides.
R—Red wedding
dresses
Red is considered to be a
very lucky colour in the Chinese
culture so brides often wear red
wedding dresses
(cheongsams). If white doesn’t
appeal, why not do the same
and spice up your wedding day.
S—Something old,
something new...
For your something old,
why not wear a wedding dress
that has been passed down
from a relative. It adds a touch
of tradition to the wedding and
will please your family too.
T—Tans with wedding
dresses
Tans look great with
wedding dresses — especially
if your gown is strapless,
sleeveless or backless. Opt for
a spray-on tan instead of the
real thing just to avoid sunburn
or peeling skin.
U—Underneath your
wedding dress
What’s underneath the
dress is important too. If you’re
wearing a strapless gown, you
may need some extra bust
support. If you want an
hourglass figure, a corset may
help.
V—To veil or not to veil
The general rule is: the
more formal the wedding
and wedding dress, the longer
the veil. If you do decide to
wear a veil, you’ll need a
headpiece to finish it off — a
tiara, flowers, a circlet or a
jewelled comb.
W—when to start
looking for a wedding
dress
Begin your search for the
perfect dress six to nine
months before the wedding. It
can take between three to six
months for a wedding dress
order to come in or for a dress
to be made. You also need to
factor in the time it takes to
make alterations.
X—xtra advice about
your wedding dress
Make sure that you are
comfortable in your wedding
dress. With all eyes on you
during the ceremony and
reception, you don’t want to be
constantly caught pulling,
tugging, smoothing and
readjusting your dress.
Y—You and your
wedding dress
You should love the look
and the feel of your wedding
dress. Don’t choose your outfit
based on the latest trends
because it won’t reflect your
personality and taste.
Z—Zipping your
wedding dress
It sounds simple enough
but you’ll be surprised just how
many brides and bridesmaids
have neglected to take the
appropriate amount of care
when zipping up their wedding
dress. Most wedding dresses
are made of delicate fabrics
and snags can cause serious
damage to the gown so be
careful!
MORE than 200
people dug
deep into
their pockets to help
people with Down
syndrome at a gala
event at Devonport’s
High Tide Restaurant
on October 18.
More than $29,000
was raised, which
was far beyond the
dreams of organisers
Kim Beveridge, who
is vice-president of
Down Syndrome
Tasmania, and DST
treasurer Leanne
Smith.
‘‘The generosity of
the local community
has been incredible,’’
Leanne said.
‘‘Our fundraising
target has been
tripled and the
feedback from the
guests was so positive
that it is certainly on
the agenda for next
year.’’
Guests were treated
to a cameo dance
performed by
Lucinda Bryant,
director of the famous
Merry Makers, and
Scotty Martin, a
popular Merry Maker
dancer.
‘‘Tears and emotion
filled the room as the
couple wove their
magic on the dance
floor,’’ Kim said.
‘‘Guests also
supported an auction
and handed over
thousands of dollars
for sporting
memorabilia, local
art and other items
provided by our
generous community.
It was unbelievable.’’
Nic and Cheryl Siely attended the Down Syndrome Tasmania gala at High Tide.
Merry Makers Lucinda Bryant and Scotty Martin.
Cindy Bird, Kim Beveridge, Kim Tidswell and Leanne Smith were also among the
200 guests who helped raise $29,000 for DST.
New service for carers of people with mental illness
Coping with a mental
illness can be tough on
the sufferer, but it can also
put a lot of strain and pressure
on their family, friends and other
carers too.
But people in the North caring
for someone with a mental health
problem need not feel alone and
unsupported - help is at hand in
the form of a new service being
run by Aspire.
Aspire is a not-for-profit,
Statewide organisation that
provides rehabilitation and
support to those affected by
mental illness and their families.
Lending a helping hand to
families has always been a priority
for Aspire.
Now, the Sage Hill Family and
Friends Service, a division of
Aspire, offers an new service for
carers of people with mental
illness - be it a family member
who may or may not be living
at home, or even a friend or a
neighbour.
The Sage Hill service - which
also operates in the North-West
- provides support, education
and information about caring
for someone with a mental
illness; facilitates access to other
community-based services and
agencies, such as respite and
individual counselling, and
promotes awareness of mental
health issues.
The programme aims to promote
resilience and coping skills,
increase understanding of mental
ADVERTISEMENT
health issues, improve the health
and wellbeing of the carer, reduce
stress and boost opportunities for
time out and socialisation.
Children in families with mental
illness can also access the service,
receive ongoing support and tap
into other activities specifically for
young people caring for someone
with a mental illness.
Staff can provide individual
support in times of crisis and
ongoing assistance through group
and social activities.
As Sage Hill is an outreach service
covering the 63 and 64 telephone
areas, participants can designate
where they wish to meet or simply
contact the service by phone if
they only require information.
Participants may access the
service once, sporadically or on a
regular basis, depending on their
needs or requirements at the time,
and no one is “discharged” from
the service.
There is no formal referral
process - anyone can contact
the service and request support
or information during business
hours.
Participants are encouraged to
take an active part in service
delivery and direction, and have
input into any new projects
proposed in each region to ensure
the service remains relevant and
meets carer needs.
The Sage Hill service also
serves to improve awareness of
mental illness through general
community education.
Rural areas are visited regularly
to ensure those community
members as well as carers know
that support is there.
More information about the
Sage Hill Family and Friends
programme is available at Aspire’s
website www.aspire.org.au
Alternatively, you can contact
WALKING BUDDIES: Members of the Over 50s Walking Group (from left) Gilbert Evans, Joyce Keep, Mavis and Brian Pilling, out on a stroll. The group walk once
a week and new members are welcome. Picture: Ceri Davies.
There’s no stopping them
By CERI DAVIES
KEEPING fit, making friends
and exploring Tasmania is what
keeps members of the Over 50s
Walking Group on their toes.
‘‘We’ve been going for 16 years
so we must be doing something
right,’’ group member Mavis
Pilling said.
Four members of the Over 50s
Walking Group, Mavis and Brian
Pilling, Gilbert Evans and Joyce
Keep, joined when the group
originally started as an initiative
of the Department of Health and
Recreation.
In those days, Alan Jolley was
the group coordinator, paid by
the department.
The group undertook a wider
range of activities then, not just
walking.
‘‘We went canoeing and all
sorts,’’ Brian said.
When Alan left the group, its
members decided to keep going.
They went further afield and
started walking in areas in
northern Tasmania.
Don Sherriff held the group
together for 14 years and put in
lots of work, scouting and
investigating walks.
‘‘We never did a walk Don
hadn’t done,’’ Gilbert said.
‘‘He checked them all, made
sure they were suitable for the
group.’’
The group currently has 20 to 25
members, but up to 35 people
have participated on their walks.
Many of the original members
are still part of the group but
newcomers are welcome.
Joyce is the group’s oldest
member. She will turn 85 soon,
and the others joke that they
can’t keep up with her.
‘‘The secret of getting older
gracefully is getting out and
about,’’ Joyce said.
‘‘You just have to get involved
and get into everything.’’
Many of the walks cater to
varying levels of fitness, offering
an easier option.
‘‘We don’t usually bush-bash.
We use good tracks,’’ Gilbert said.
‘‘We generally walk for one-anda
half to two hours, but we often
travel first and have a barbecue
or a picnic.
‘‘We made friends with each
other because we walked
together. Once a month we go for
an all-day walk.’’
Some all-day expeditions have
included Cradle Mountain,
Trevallyn Dam and Wynyard, for
the tulips.
‘‘We need men desperately!’’
Mavis laughed.
‘‘There are lots of women in the
group and it would be nice to
have a few men around.’’
group on their weekly walks, contact
World-class gymnastics group to perform at Devonport Sports Centre
Danish troupe
to tumble its
way into town
By CERI DAVIES
IT IS A rare event to have a worldfamous
group visit Devonport. But
on December 3, the National Danish
Performance Team will work their
gymnastic magic at the Devonport
Sports Centre.
The team consists of 28
performers, 14 males and 14
females, who have performed in 50
countries around the world.
They mix traditional gymnastics
with clowning, modern gymnastics
including funk and hip hop, and
artistic tumbling and vaulting
performances.
Christina Jaggard, gymnastic
coach for Slipstream Circus and the
head coach of the Meander Valley
Club, said it was a truly remarkable
group with a great show.
‘‘They’re just amazing — gorgeous
to look at and an absolutely
beautiful show,’’ she said.
‘‘They really do offer something
for the whole family.’’
The group is being brought to
Tasmania by Gymnastics
Tasmania, as part of an
Australian tour.
The team’s manager approached
Christina at Gymnaestrada, a
gathering of up to 25,000 gymnasts
held in Europe every four years.
Because of Princess Mary’s
Tasmanian origins, the team
desperately wanted to include a
visit to the island.
Only three shows will be given in
Tasmania, two in the south of the
state, and this show in Devonport.
The team will also hold a
workshop for gymnastics coaches
and visit some of the local
attractions, including Cradle
Mountain.
‘‘We are so lucky to have been able
to bring the group here,’’ Christina
said.
‘‘It is a triumph for Tasmania and
for the North-West Coast.’’
■ Tickets are available from
Centretainment by calling 6234 5998, or
