Leading the way are staff at 

Bruce Gowans Toyota who

‘‘It is a chance for us to

GREEN Corps and Forestry 

Tasmania and are calling 

for help from the public to 

preserve the history of the 

shale mining era. The 

organisations are 

developing an interpretive 

walking track in the 

Warrawee Forest Reserve. 

Interpreting the function of 

many of these industrial 

relics is proving a 

challenge and the group is 

keen to hear from anyone 

who may be able to shed 

light on the process. They 

are also asking for the loan 

of old photographs of the 

1912 shale works and of 

the surrounding mining 

sites, plant and equipment 

and associated activities in 

order to bring the relics to 

life and assist in telling the 

story of this almost 

forgotten phase in 

Latrobe’s history. Anyone

EVER get the feeling something is missing in 

your life? 

Since coming to the RSCPA Devonport I have 

been feeling a bit out of sorts. 

I couldn’t quite put my hoof on it but then I 

clicked. Oh boy, I had been given the snip. 

Like all animals who are brought to the 

RSPCA to be re-homed, I was desexed. Or 

‘‘gelded’’ in my case. 

Look don’t get me wrong, I know it is 

important and responsible pet ownership, but 

crikey what harm was a little bloke like me 

going to do? 

Oh sure, I am popular with the ladies, well at 

least I was before this happened. 

The staff here have told me they can’t reverse 

it so it looks like I am stuck with it now. Mate, 

I have got to get out of here before they 

remove anything else! 

Is there anyone out there looking for a pet or 

paddock mate? My name is Xavier and I am 

a two-year-old Shetland pony. 

I need a home where someone has a bit of 

horse sense. And some company would be 

good too, another horse, pony or a goat — 

even better if they are of the female variety. 

I still love the ladies, you know.

Mersey to expand 

oncology services

Christmas concert 

YOUR Voice Productions will perform a one-act opera in 

English, Amahl and the Night Visitors, as part of a 

Christmas concert. The opera cast are working under 

the guidance of Penelope Bruce and Lindy Hingston. The 

Christmas concert will be performed at the Devonport 

Entertainment Centre on December 19 at 7.30pm and 

December 21 at 2pm. There will also be a show at the 

Latrobe Performing Arts Centre (Memorial Hall) on 

December 22 at 7.30pm. Ticket are available from the 

DECC and cost $20 adults and $16.50 concession.

THE Mersey Community 

Hospital oncology unit will 

soon be open five days a week 

instead of three. 

Clinical nurse manager 

Anne Wilks said the hospital 

was in the process of 

employing an additional 

oncology nurse, which would 

enable the clinic to extend its 

opening hours. 

‘‘It will make a difference 

for people who are travelling 

to Burnie or the Holman 

Clinic for treatment,’’ she 

said. 

‘‘When we are open five 

days a week we can bring 

some of these local people 

back here. 

‘‘With more staff, we can 

spend more time with the 

patients.’’ 

It is hoped that the extended 

opening hours will be 

effective before Christmas. 

Ms Wilks said the extra two 

days would not only increase 

the number of people able to 

utilise oncology services at 

the Mersey Community 

Hospital, but also provide 

greater flexibility for existing 

patients. 

As well as the services of an 

extra nurse, the oncology 

unit has recently been 

refurbished. 

The old recliner chairs have 

been replaced with seats 

specifically designed for 

oncology and renal patients. 

There is also a new plasma 

television for patients to 

watch during treatment, new 

infusion pumps and monitors 

and a new fridge for storing 

medication. 

Patient Catharina 

Kranenburg, who has been 

visiting the clinic since 2007, 

was particularly pleased with 

the new chairs. 

‘‘They are lovely,’’ she said. 

‘‘A big improvement on the 

old ones.’’

IF THE smiles around the room 

were anything to go by, the Look 

Good...Feel Better session lived up 

to its name. 

The workshop, held at the Mersey 

Community Hospital last week, 

taught cancer patients skin care, how 

to apply makeup and creative and 

practical ways of dealing with 

possible hair loss. 

Participant Lynnese Pease said 

while she learnt many useful 

techniques, the most beneficial part 

of the day was meeting other women 

also fighting cancer. 

‘‘For me, the most important thing 

is the new friendships I have gained,’’ 

she said. 

‘‘It helps people feel relaxed about 

the way they are looking and who 

they are. 

‘‘It is a really fun, relaxing, casual 

day.’’ 

LGFB volunteer coordinator 

Heather Eleveld said she encouraged 

anyone undergoing treatment to sign 

up for the workshops, which are held 

about four times a year. 

She said they were hoping to run a 

workshop for men next year.

On the hunt for new home 

FOUR young 

greyhounds are 

looking for good 

homes after being 

surrendered to the RSPCA 

Devonport. 

The playful pups are 

from the same litter and 

are about four-and-a-half 

months old. 

One of the five 

greyhounds surrendered 

has already been adopted, 

but the remaining four 

siblings are eager to find 

families. 

RSPCA animal attendant 

Ashton Claridge said 

despite being bred for 

racing, greyhounds made 

great family pets. 

‘‘They are very easy to 

train,’’ she said. 

‘‘They are very gentle 

and have a loving nature. 

‘‘They make a great 

family pet. 

‘‘They would need to be 

walked every day, 

although they do not 

require as much exercise 

as you would think, 

adapting easily to the 

couch life.’’

desexed, wormed, had at

vaccination and been 

microchipped.

Centre may have 

moved to its new 

premises in January, 

but there are no signs 

the gloss is wearing 

off for its staff. 

‘‘It’s just divine after 

the old place,’’ donor 

services officer Dawn 

Gillam said. 

Donors can now 

give blood from the 

comfort of new hightech 

chairs. 

‘‘Now we can 

process up to 34 

donations a day,’’ 

staff member Chris 

Johns said. 

‘‘We generally 

average about 20 

people. 

‘‘Our best day was 

30 donors.’’ 

The premises are 

not the only thing to 

have changed, with 

new donor forms also 

introduced in 

September. 

The new forms are 

designed to further 

ensure the safety of 

the blood supply. 

People under 40 can

every two weeks. 

The staff know most 

regular donors by 

name and encourage 

them to ‘‘grab 

something from the 

fridge’’ after their 

donation. 

‘‘We had a young 

bloke come in a 

couple of weeks ago 

who was a multiple 

donor,’’ staff member 

Bron King said. 

‘‘He gave blood and 

plasma, was a 

registered bone 

marrow and organ 

donor, and had 

already arranged to 

leave his body to 

science. 

‘‘People like that 

really are heroes.’’

periods and conditions.

important changes many 

people are unaware of is 

that all burning off is now 

prohibited on blocks of 

less than 2000sq m,’’ he 

said. 

‘‘We are happy to visit 

and give advice and 

provide a site assessment. 

‘‘We can help plan and 

give you the right 

information, including 

checking for clear 

identification at the front 

of a home. 

‘‘In a fire we perform 

structural triage — we see 

which houses are prepared 

and can be defended by the 

owner, which are mainly 

prepared and need support 

from firies and which are 

undefendable.

undefendable.’’

Tony Perry has been 

part of the backbone of 

the Tasmania Fire Service. 

He has been a volunteer 

firefighter with the Sassafras 

brigade for 19 years and he 

recently joined as a volunteer 

in Devonport too. 

Tony said he became a 

volunteer to give something 

back to his community. 

‘‘But it was also because a 

fire went through and I didn’t 

know what to do,’’ he said. 

‘‘I wanted to know the right 

things to do so I joined as a 

volunteer.’’

National Seniors Australia 

THE National Seniors Australia, North-West Coast 

Ulverstone Branch is hosting Ken Gourlay as guest 

speaker at its meeting on November 12. In 2000, Ken set 

about planning and setting in motion a quest to sail 

single-handed, non-stop around the world. Ken departed 

on his circumnavigation in November 2006 and returned 

in May 2007 after overcoming sail failure and rigging 

problems he became the fastest Australian to do so. He 

also became the first Tasmanian, the oldest and first 

grandfather to do so. The meeting will be held at the 

Senior Citizens Hall King Edward St, Ulverstone starting 

at 10.30am sharp instead of the usual time of 11am. 

Non-members of are welcome to attend, entry will be by 

a gold coin donation.

AVOCADO trees at 

Spreyton are an unusual 

sight, but Dick Shaw has 

been growing them since 

1995. 

In addition to his 100 or so 

avocado trees, he also has 

more than 50 tamarillo 

trees, which look as if they 

are decorated with 

Christmas ornaments. 

‘‘We didn’t want to be 

slaves to an empty 

paddock,’’ Dick said. 

‘‘We’d spent most of our 

lives in the tropics, in 

Africa, Fiji, PNG and 

northern Australia. 

‘‘We wanted to find a 

niche market. 

‘‘I was sure we could grow 

avocados here.’’ 

He certainly could. 

In a north-east facing 

paddock, the avocados are 

laden with fruit and 

flowers. 

Dick grows Haas, Reed, 

Sharwil and Bacon 

varieties of avocados. 

‘‘Avocados and tamarillos 

both grow in mountain 

areas,’’ he said. 

‘‘Tamarillos grow at over 

6000 feet. 

‘‘They can cope with frost, 

especially once they’re 

established. 

‘‘They grow more slowly 

here than in the tropics, 

but slightly dwarfed trees 

make it easier to pick the 

fruit.’’ 

Dick mainly sells his 

avocados to restaurants. 

‘‘They are sought after 

because they haven’t been 

either chilled or gassed, 

which much of the fruit 

transported to Tasmania 

has been,’’ he said. 

‘‘We’re still increasing 

production, but last year 

was down because of the 

drought. 

‘‘We were selling our 

tamarillos to one of the 

large supermarket chains, 

but the dry weather has 

meant this year’s crop isn’t 

up to standard.’’ 

Dick said the Tasmaniangrown 

avocados have a 

particularly intense 

flavour. 

Local insects love to 

pollinate the flowers, but 

luckily, few local animals 

eat the tropical fruits. 

‘‘We had trouble with one 

possum who developed a

Fry a diced rasher of bacon until 

crisp, place in a bowl with a little 

balsamic vinegar and mix. 

Leave to sit for a moment. 

Cut a thick slice of fresh Vienna 

loaf and place half an avocado on 

the bread. 

Place bacon on top of avocado 

and sprinkle with a little more 

balsamic. 

Bon appetit. Serves one.

lemonade trees laden with

fruit and many plants 

usually seen only indoors, 

such as monstera, China 

doll and umbrella trees. 

He even has a banana 

tree. 

‘‘In the tropics it takes 

eight to 10 months to grow 

and fruit (bananas). 

‘‘Here it takes three years 

— and just as the bananas 

form, they get hit by frost,’’ 

he laughed.

UNWIND 

Rare catch to become an attraction 

ARECENT capture 

by local fisherman 

Les Sims, of a rare 

albino short-finned eel 

was very interesting and 

it provides an opportunity 

to have a closer look at 

these much-maligned but 

fascinating native fish. 

Les has been catching 

eels commercially for 

many years now — for 

live export and smoked 

products. 

He can catch up to 

17 tons per year and for a 

fish that has an average 

weight of 750 grams, he 

has seen a lot of eels! 

Most are taken from 

farm dams along the 

coast, with specially made 

fyke nets which the eels 

can enter but find it 

difficult to escape from. 

No other fish are caught 

in these nets, due to 

screens placed in front of 

them, and most farmers 

are happy for the eels to 

be caught as they can 

cause problems with 

irrigation equipment and 

they prey on stocked fish 

such as small trout. 

In the past, he has also 

assisted the Inland 

Fisheries Service in 

surveying stocks of 

migrating elvers (juvenile 

eels) and whitebait with 

similarly designed nets. 

A few weeks ago Les 

captured his second ever 

albino eel in the Mersey 

River. His first was back 

in 1976, caught from the 

Tamar River. 

I visited Les’s home 

where he was holding the 

eel in a large tank and the 

first thing I noticed was 

its vivid colour. 

Expecting a pale white 

fish I was surprised to 

find it was a bright yellow 

colour that was strikingly 

different from the 

standard colouration. 

The fact that this eel had 

grown to full maturity is 

amazing as its colour 

makes it stand out in the 

water. It has done a 

terrific job avoiding 

predators such as 

cormorants and larger 

fish. 

Trying to scoop the eel 

up out of the tank for a 

photo demonstrated its 

advanced evasive skills as 

it proved very difficult to 

handle compared to the 

other eels. 

There are two species of 

large freshwater eels in 

Tasmanian waters, the 

more common shortfinned 

eel and the larger 

long-finned eel. 

The long-finned variety 

are more common in the 

north east of the state and 

The rare albino eel with the more common eel. 

Les reported the biggest 

eel he has caught was 

more than 150cm long and 

weighed more than 11kg. 

Interestingly it was one 

of four, over almost 10kg 

caught at the one time in 

the Mersey river about 

eight years ago. 

The life cycle of the 

freshwater eels is quite 

amazing. At about seven 

years of age mature eels 

under take the long 

journey north to the Coral 

and Arufura seas off 

northern Australia where 

they spawn in deep ocean 

trenches before returning 

to Tasmania. 

The juveniles hatch and 

drift south in the 

plankton-rich East 

Australian current where 

they grow to a size that 

enables them to become 

self mobile and are known 

as glass eels. 

They begin their 

migration back to their 

home and transform into 

elvers when they start to 

resemble their adult form. 

This remarkable 

journey can take up to 

two years for the tiny eels 

to complete. 

Next time you see an eel 

in one of our freshwater 

lakes or streams take a 

moment and think where 

these creatures have been 

and if you are on the 

mainland call in to the 

Melbourne Aquarium and 

you may just see an 

albino short-finned eel 

from the Mersey River.

Christmas Spirit 

Visitors to the Mersey Bluff will be able to indulge in an ice-cream, grab a 

spot of lunch or even some breakfast following Devonport City Council’s 

successful call for expressions of interest to service the Mersey Bluff area. 

“The Lunch Van” has been supplying food and drink in the vicinity of the 

Surf Club since Saturday 1st November. They will be providing a range 

of foods including pies, burgers, breakfast, sandwiches, chips, lollies, hot 

meals, drinks and ice-creams. 

They will be open 7 days a week from at least 10am until 4pm weekdays, 

with longer opening hours on the weekend. 

“Council is very pleased with this outcome and our officers have worked 

hard to ensure that these services were up and running in time for the long 

weekend,” General Manager Ian McCallum said. 

“I’m hopeful that the community will show their support and get behind this 

new venture,” he said.

New service for carers of people with mental illness 

Coping with a mental 

illness can be tough on 

the sufferer, but it can also 

put a lot of strain and pressure 

on their family, friends and other 

carers too. 

But people in the North caring 

for someone with a mental health 

problem need not feel alone and 

unsupported - help is at hand in 

the form of a new service being 

run by Aspire. 

Aspire is a not-for-profit, 

Statewide organisation that 

provides rehabilitation and 

support to those affected by 

mental illness and their families. 

Lending a helping hand to 

families has always been a priority 

for Aspire. 

Now, the Sage Hill Family and 

Friends Service, a division of 

Aspire, offers an new service for 

carers of people with mental 

illness - be it a family member 

who may or may not be living 

at home, or even a friend or a 

neighbour. 

The Sage Hill service - which 

also operates in the North-West 

- provides support, education 

and information about caring 

for someone with a mental 

illness; facilitates access to other 

community-based services and 

agencies, such as respite and 

individual counselling, and 

promotes awareness of mental 

health issues. 

The programme aims to promote 

resilience and coping skills, 

increase understanding of mental

health issues, improve the health 

and wellbeing of the carer, reduce 

stress and boost opportunities for 

time out and socialisation. 

Children in families with mental 

illness can also access the service, 

receive ongoing support and tap 

into other activities specifically for 

young people caring for someone 

with a mental illness. 

Staff can provide individual 

support in times of crisis and 

ongoing assistance through group 

and social activities. 

As Sage Hill is an outreach service 

covering the 63 and 64 telephone 

areas, participants can designate 

where they wish to meet or simply 

contact the service by phone if 

they only require information. 

Participants may access the 

service once, sporadically or on a 

regular basis, depending on their 

needs or requirements at the time, 

and no one is “discharged” from 

the service. 

There is no formal referral 

process - anyone can contact 

the service and request support 

or information during business 

hours. 

Participants are encouraged to 

take an active part in service 

delivery and direction, and have 

input into any new projects 

proposed in each region to ensure 

the service remains relevant and 

meets carer needs. 

The Sage Hill service also 

serves to improve awareness of 

mental illness through general 

community education. 

Rural areas are visited regularly 

to ensure those community 

members as well as carers know 

that support is there.

There’s no stopping them 


KEEPING fit, making friends 

and exploring Tasmania is what 

keeps members of the Over 50s 

Walking Group on their toes. 

‘‘We’ve been going for 16 years 

so we must be doing something 

right,’’ group member Mavis 

Pilling said. 

Four members of the Over 50s 

Walking Group, Mavis and Brian 

Pilling, Gilbert Evans and Joyce 

Keep, joined when the group 

originally started as an initiative 

of the Department of Health and 

Recreation. 

In those days, Alan Jolley was 

the group coordinator, paid by 

the department. 

The group undertook a wider 

range of activities then, not just 

walking. 

‘‘We went canoeing and all 

sorts,’’ Brian said. 

When Alan left the group, its 

members decided to keep going. 

They went further afield and 

started walking in areas in 

northern Tasmania. 

Don Sherriff held the group 

together for 14 years and put in 

lots of work, scouting and 

investigating walks. 

‘‘We never did a walk Don 

hadn’t done,’’ Gilbert said. 

‘‘He checked them all, made 

sure they were suitable for the 

group.’’ 

The group currently has 20 to 25 

members, but up to 35 people 

have participated on their walks. 

Many of the original members 

are still part of the group but 

newcomers are welcome. 

Joyce is the group’s oldest 

member. She will turn 85 soon, 

and the others joke that they 

can’t keep up with her. 

‘‘The secret of getting older 

gracefully is getting out and 

about,’’ Joyce said. 

‘‘You just have to get involved 

and get into everything.’’ 

Many of the walks cater to 

varying levels of fitness, offering 

an easier option. 

‘‘We don’t usually bush-bash. 

We use good tracks,’’ Gilbert said. 

‘‘We generally walk for one-anda 

half to two hours, but we often 

travel first and have a barbecue 

or a picnic. 

‘‘We made friends with each 

other because we walked 

together. Once a month we go for 

an all-day walk.’’ 

Some all-day expeditions have 

included Cradle Mountain, 

Trevallyn Dam and Wynyard, for 

the tulips. 

‘‘We need men desperately!’’ 

Mavis laughed. 

‘‘There are lots of women in the 

group and it would be nice to 

have a few men around.’’

World-class gymnastics group to perform at Devonport Sports Centre 

Danish troupe 

to tumble its 

way into town 


IT IS A rare event to have a worldfamous 

group visit Devonport. But 

on December 3, the National Danish 

Performance Team will work their 

gymnastic magic at the Devonport 

Sports Centre. 

The team consists of 28 

performers, 14 males and 14 

females, who have performed in 50 

countries around the world. 

They mix traditional gymnastics 

with clowning, modern gymnastics 

including funk and hip hop, and 

artistic tumbling and vaulting 

performances. 

Christina Jaggard, gymnastic 

coach for Slipstream Circus and the 

head coach of the Meander Valley 

Club, said it was a truly remarkable 

group with a great show. 

‘‘They’re just amazing — gorgeous 

to look at and an absolutely 

beautiful show,’’ she said. 

‘‘They really do offer something 

for the whole family.’’ 

The group is being brought to 

Tasmania by Gymnastics 

Tasmania, as part of an 

Australian tour. 

The team’s manager approached 

Christina at Gymnaestrada, a 

gathering of up to 25,000 gymnasts 

held in Europe every four years. 

Because of Princess Mary’s 

Tasmanian origins, the team 

desperately wanted to include a 

visit to the island. 

Only three shows will be given in 

Tasmania, two in the south of the 

state, and this show in Devonport. 

The team will also hold a 

workshop for gymnastics coaches 

and visit some of the local 

attractions, including Cradle 

Mountain. 

‘‘We are so lucky to have been able 

to bring the group here,’’ Christina 

said. 

‘‘It is a triumph for Tasmania and 

for the North-West Coast.’’
