Who is LOWA? 

Take a walk, a hike, even a climb across the mountainous 

regions of Europe: Germany, Austria, 

Switzerland, all the places where strong, durable boots 

are a necessity, and you’ll find LOWA Boots standing at 

the top, the leading hiking and mountaineering boot 

brand on the continent. 

But things weren’t always this way. Our beginnings 

were humble ones. Three quarters of a century ago, we 

were unassuming Bavarian cobblers; craftsman plying a 

trade in the small town of Munich, Germany. Now, not 

only is our Trekker the number one selling boot on the 

European continent, but pick up any of the five leading 

styles of women’s boots in Europe and you’ll find the 

name LOWA proudly stitched on the side. 

Sure we’ve grown. But we haven’t lost sight of what 

carried us to the top: genuine craftsmanship, first-rate 

components, the best leathers and uncompromising 

attention to detail and fit. Hey, we’re German.

Who is LOWA?

A Little Background on LOWA 

• LOWA has been making boots since 1923. That’s 79 

years of boot building. Compare that to most US companies 

who have been outsourcing boots for 30 years, 

and draw your own conclusions. 

• Our corporate offices and primary factory are located 

in Jetzendorf, Germany, in the heart of Bavaria. 

And yes, we like to make comparisons with the 

famous automaker from the same area. Like them, we 

are famous for uncompromising quality, product 

innovation and attention to detail…which in turn, 

translates to the “ultimate” in comfort, performance 

and durability. 

• The LOWA DIFFERENCE: We design our own 

boots, and we make our own boots - and we do it in 

Europe. 

• As you flip through this book, notice all the patented 

features that we build into our boots. The C4 

tongue, Asymmetric Walking Position and our unique

The first step each LOWA boot takes begins with 

German engineering: 

• LOWA boots are designed in Jetzendorf by our 

research and development team. 

• This same team is also responsible for testing 

durability, materials and waterproofing. 

• 200 pairs of hands touch each boot during the 

manufacturing process 

• LOWA’s goal is to design boots with a superior fit and 

greater comfort so your customers will experience: 

• Better fit 

• Easier & shorter break-in time 

• Better performance 

• More comfort and enjoyment

A Little Background on LOWA

QUALIFYING THE CUSTOMER 

There’s more to making a sale than simply providing 

information. Use these tips to connect with and provide 

professional service and advice for your customer. 

ASK the customer what their needs are. 

Where do they intend to use their boots? What sort of 

terrain? Will it be backcountry? On or off trail? Will 

they be carrying a loaded backpack or a day pack? 

Will it be a wet or dry climate? Will they have time to 

break in their boots? 

SUMMARIZE your customer’s needs. 

i.e. “So, you’ll be using your boots on a five day backpacking 

trip, on trail, carrying about 50 lbs. in the 

Southern Utah desert, and you’ll have about a month 

to break in your boots.” 

PROVIDE your customer with useful information about 

the boots you recommend. 

Use the information in this book to help you seal the 

deal.

THE PERFECT FIT 

The ultimate result in perfect boot-fitting is to increase 

customer satisfaction, to make you and your shop look 

professional, and to keep people coming back. 

LOWA is a proud sponsor of the Phil Oren FitSystem 

which teaches retailers how to correctly fit a boot to an 

individual foot. If you ever have a chance to attend a 

FitSystem Seminar, you should jump at the opportunity. 

Five general steps to keep in mind are: 

1. Perform a visual assessment of the foot - i.e. high or 

low volume, width. 

2. Measure the foot correctly - be sure to use a Brannock 

device. 

3. Check for a snug heel and correct width. Does the 

boot break correctly at the ball of the foot? 

4. Check for the correct fitting sock and if the boot is 

laced properly. 

5. Decide if the customer needs an after-market footbed.

PATENTED C4 TONGUE 

The C4 tongue is designed to work with the way the 

foot naturally moves when walking to enhance comfort 

and performance, improving flex, ankle control and 

reducing break-in time. 

This includes: 

• Anatomically contoured padding, thicker on the outer 

side of the foot 

• Recessed ankle section, higher on the inner side 

• Forward bellows insert on inner side of the foot

THE AWP 

(Asymmetric Walking Position) 

The patented AWP corresponds 

perfectly to the anatomic contour 

of the leg. A two-degree lateral 

canting of the boot accommodates 

a more natural stance, especially 

with custom footbeds. 

The result: 

• The shaft rim is raised on the 

inner side of the boot to 

deliver improved support. 

• Asymmetric C4 Tongue works to 

reduce the break-in time of the boot on the ankle. 

• Slight canting (2 degrees) on men’s boots prevent 

over-pronation. 

BENEFIT: Provides a more natural stance, which can 

mean the difference between fatigue and stamina on the 

trail. It also has an easier overall break-in period.

CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM 

Simply put, moisture in a boot is a bad thing. 

Sweaty feet lead to blisters and discomfort. 

The LOWA Climate Control System 

helps alleviate that problem. 

Take a look at the cuff of a 

LOWA hiking boot. Those holes 

are carrying moisture out of the 

boot by means of the pumping effect that naturally 

occurs when walking. 

Here’s how: 

• Heat and moisture escape through holes in the boot 

liners and tongue. 

• Cool and dry air can enter the boot lining through the 

exterior holes while foot movement “pumps” heat and 

moisture through holes at the top of the tongue and 

cuff. 

• Holes are placed high on the boot cuff, above where 

water would normally enter. 

BENEFIT: Dry feet are less likely to develop blisters and 

hot spots.

GLOVE LEATHER LINING 

- IT FEELS BETTER 

Very few boot companies include glove leather linings 

in their products. LOWA does. It’s just one more 

benefit that makes our footwear the superior market 

contender. Not only does it feel sinfully delicious, it’s a 

great moisture manager too. 

• Glove leather lining can be found in the heel area or 

throughout the whole boot. 

• Leather is nature’s original moisture management and 

climate regulator.

to the shape of the foot providing increased comfort and 

a custom fit.

HARDWARE - EYELETS 

The Sprung Lace Hook System makes LOWA 

boots more versatile both when the boots are 

laced up and when they’re unlaced. 

When shoes are unlaced, the lace hooks 

stand slightly away from the boot to make shoe 

lacing a breeze. 

When tension is applied to the lace, the 

hooks to flatten against the shoe, preventing that 

annoying tendency to catch on things. 

Additionally, the Sprung Lace Hook System allows the 

boot to wrap directly around the foot which translates to 

an even better fit. 

BENEFIT: Provides ease and security of lacing while 

adding to the precise fit of the boot.

SHANKING AND STABILIZER SYSTEM 

LOWA uses a nylon shank in all 

boots. (We call it the fly swatter.) 

• Full length and width offers 

significantly more torsional lateral support than you 

would find with a steel shank. 

• Nylon does not conduct cold like steel shanks. 

• Thickness of the shank is proportionally varied to the 

size, style and function of each boot. 

• Proportionally varied for users of all foot sizes. 

• Lighter use boots have a thinner shank at the ball of 

the foot for improved flex. 

BENEFIT: Provides improved ankle stability and 

torsional control under foot.

THE LOWA LAST 

LOWA’S worldwide reputation for superior fit begins 

with the LOWA LAST. The last helps determine the inner 

shape of the boot. Quality manufacturers develop their 

own lasts to assure optimum comfort and fit. You can’t 

really see it, but you can certainly feel it; it’s the overall 

shape of the boot, and it’s critical to a great fit. 

• We’ve spent the better part of a century figuring out 

people’s feet and what fits them best. 

• LOWA lasts are precisely designed according to 

anatomical data that has been combined over years of 

intense research. 

• Anatomical models are hand-carved from wood. 

• Men’s feet and legs differ dramatically from women’s. 

Therefore, LOWA uses differently carved lasts for 

men’s and women’s boots.

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S FEET 

ARE NOT THE SAME 

Ask your female customers how their feet feel once 

they’ve slipped into a LOWA. Chances are, they’re 

going to tell you they love it. Don’t be surprised. 

LOWA’s Women’s boots are globally acclaimed for their 

outstanding fit. This is accomplished through specially 

designed lasts just for women because women typically 

have: 

• Narrow heels, yet often wide at the ball of the foot

HOW LOWA BOOTS GET MADE 

HIGHEST QUALITY LEATHER 

Leather is the most important raw material in a boot. 

Because it is natural, leather wraps around the foot for a 

closer fit. It also wears well. While some boots are made 

using synthetic materials, these simply cannot compare 

to leather for superior fit or ease of break-in. 

• There are three different quality “zones” in cattle hide. 

• The best quality hide is called the “Croupon” and is 

located on the back of the hide. 

• The Croupon is the most consistent part of the hide, 

containing no wrinkles or areas of uneven thickness. 

ALL LOWA BOOT LEATHERS COME FROM THE 

CROUPON.

FOUR DIFFERENT TYPES OF LEATHER 

FULL GRAIN: This is the thicker outer part of the 

croupon. 

SPLIT OR SUEDE: When the leather is split, the inner, 

more textured side is the split or suede leather. 

NUBUCK: This is a full grain leather that has been lightly 

sanded for a softer finish. This gives it a suede-like 

look. But don’t be fooled by its soft, suede look. Nubuck 

is rugged and durable. 

GLOVE LEATHER: This is the thin top layer. It is used for 

the lining because it is soft and supple. 

CUTTING 

LOWA leather cutters are among the most experienced 

workers in the factory. 

• First, patterns are laid out on sheets of leather and the 

boot piece is cut, by hand, with metal die cutters. 

• Some boots will require as many as 25-30 pieces of 

leather and other materials, with each individual 

piece requiring its own die.

STITCHING 

• Each upper is stitched by hand, with 

up to 75 steps. 

• High stress areas are double-stitched. 

• New synthetic, non-wicking thread is 

used in all stitching. 

• When the boot begins to take shape, 

string laces are used to hold it together. 

• All stitching is done in factories throughout Germany, 

Italy and Eastern Europe. 

THE LASTING PROCESS 

• The upper is precisely laced for lasting. 

• The insole or shank is tacked to the boot. 

• The uppers go through the vapor channel 

where they are conditioned with steam 

and heat for lasting to make them pliable 

and to prevent tearing. 

• The upper is then stretched over the last and the 

fore-foot is glued to the insole. 

• Next, the heel is stretched over the last and nailed to 

the insole.

THE RAND 

• At LOWA, all rubber rands are 

hand-wrapped. 

• Masking tape is applied to the 

upper to make sure the glue is 

applied neatly. 

• A special machine presses the rand to the boot upper. 

• Boots with new “high wall” rubber rand are placed 

between two pressurized “water pillows” to ensure 

even adhesion to the boot. 

OUTSOLES 

• A special, heat-sensitive glue is applied to the sole. 

• A UV light, which makes the glue appear blue, is used 

by LOWA craftspeople to ensure the glue is applied 

evenly and completely. 

• Pressure is applied to the upper 

and the sole for a complete glue 

process. 

• The sole is heated before it is 

bonded to the upper. 

• The complete shoe is run 

through a cooling channel 

to “shrink” the upper to the last.

designed for performance and sport skiers who want 

exceptionally warm, comfortable, easy-to-use boots that 

are a great fit for your foot and your wallet. 

SNOW BOOTS 

LOWA crafts a wide range of cold-weather boots that 

are great for snowshoeing, apres ski or just walking in 

the snow. They feature GORE-TEX ® for waterproofness 

and insulation for added warmth.

CARING FOR YOUR LOWA BOOTS 

CLEANING 

• Using a wet rag, clean all dirt off the surface of the 

boot. Remove footbeds and clean the inside, 

removing dirt and salt residue. 

• If boots are really dirty, use saddle soap and rinse 

thoroughly. 

• Pull out the laces and open the tongue. Pull out the 

footbed and dry boots at room temperature. Airing out 

may take 24 hours. 

WATERPROOFING 

• Treat outside of boot with a water-based waterproofing 

product that is appropriate for the boots’ type of 

leather. Please note that WE DO NOT RECOMMEND 

SILICONE-BASED WATERPROOFING PRODUCTS. 

DON’TS 

• Do not dry boots in an oven or by a fire or other 

source of heat. 

• Do not store boots in an overheated space (trunk of 

car or attic in the summer).

LOWA WARRANTY 

LOWA boots are warranted to be free from defects in 

workmanship and materials for a period of 12 months 

from the date of purchase. 

Your exclusive remedy for breach of such warranty is 

repair or replacement of your LOWA boots at LOWA’s 

discretion. 

If your LOWA boots need repair or replacement due 

to defect in workmanship or materials, simply return 

your LOWA boots to the dealer where you purchased 

them. 

You will need to provide proof of purchase. 

Make sure that your return request falls within 12 

months from the date of purchase.
