the lowa fit: the aaaah factorSometimes it’s important to state the obvious: Customers want boots that FIT! It’s a “Top 3” factorin why they choose the boots they do. LOWA has earned a worldwide reputation for “out of the boxcomfort” and superior fit. Our last (the form on which we build our boots) is one of the secrets to this -we’ve spent decades compiling data on literally millions of different feet. The result is a last design thatfits a very broad range of feet. The LOWA last is made to the SATRA standard which is a worldwide standard. It’s not improvised likeother brands that use generic lasts in Asian factories.Recently, LOWA did a sizing comparison between 3 women’s boots (2 from the “M” brands and 1Tempest Lo). What we found is:- Although all the standards (SATRA and Brannock) show a 1.5 size change from UK to US sizes, the two “M” brands used a 2.5 size change to get there. And even with that, they still haveshorter inner lengths than LOWA.- An inconsistency in sizes between the two “M” brands (At one size, “M2” is bigger than “M1”,and is then smaller than “M1” at the next size. Go figure.)Women’s Shoe Size ComparisonUSUKEUInner lengthWidth of insole(forefoot)M1 shoe M2 shoe Tempest Lo LadyL 7 L 7 L 64.5 4.5 4.537.5 38 37.5245 mm 246 mm 247 mm88 mm 90 mm 84 mmM1 shoe M2 shoe Tempest Lo LadyL 10 L 10 L 97.5 7.5 7.541 42 41.5272 mm 270 mm 274 mm95 mm 96 mm 94 mmQuick UK to US size conversionFor Men’s sizes: Add 1 to UK size to find US sizeFor Women’s ATC sizes: Add 2 to Euro size to find US sizeFor Women’s Classic sizes: Add 1.5 to Euro size to find US sizeThe LOWA last is typically narrow in the heel and full around the ball of the foot, which makes LOWAboots a good fit for many folks. The Tanark, Arko, Falco and Baleno are made on a narrower last than otherLOWA backpacking and trekking boots - so there’s a selection of fits to make more customers happy! We use pieced leather in our uppers to provide a more precise fit.- We use different lasts for men and women- Our boots generally fit a half size larger than the Brannock size in men’s and a full size largerin women’s (this is approximate).Dear LOWA...Just had to let you know that after a ten-day - 60 mile hike in KluaneNational Park, my feet were happiest of all my friends. Here’s a photo of me and my happy feet yesterday on top of Bear Mountainat Bear lake on Baranof Island where I live and hike with my LOWAs everyday. As a guide, I wear them daily - now a trip to the grocery store won’t flywithout my LOWAs.So, from a happy customer in Alaska - I send many thanks and praise forthese unbeatable boots.Cheers,Cindy E.The LOWA Fit

I also bought a backpack. From that point, I left theU.S. on an 18-month around-the-world trip that spanned from the jungles of Fiji to the ice packs of New Zealand, to the deserts ofUzbekistan. I wore my Lowa boots every day and when they weren’t on my feet they were strapped to the back of my pack. In that18 months I went through 11 pairs of sandals, and two pairs of tennis shoes, but my LOWAs kept going. I’vebeen back in the states for more than two years now, and after buying new laces for them, they still sit inmy closet and go with me whenever I hike, camp, or venture out into the snow. They have been soaked incountless rivers, frozen on more than a few mountainsides, and filled with oozing muck more times than I cancount, and they look practically new to this day. I’ve never seen a tougher, better built boot, and I tell allmy buddies that if they want good foot gear, there’s only one choice: Lowa.I’m considering buying a new pair this year, but it’s a hard choice to make when my old ones still get thejob done. Amazing. You guys are the best! Have a great new year.Sincerely,Derek P.The LOWA Fit

girl powerWomen have become one of the driving forces in the outdoor market and their buying power is here tostay. That’s a good thing for LOWA, because once women try our boots, they usually become fiercely loyalto our brand. Why such loyalty? Simple - our women’s boots have always been built to fit women’s feet andlegs. LOWA understands that it’s important to build a women’s boot with true women’s lasts and designboots with women’s-only features.Fashion designer, Diane Von Furstenberg may not be your typical customer but she’s a dedicated hiker thathas found her boot - LOWAs! She wears Renegades and Klondikes, and calls them “sexy in a weird way.”Here are a few examples of the special little details that make LOWA boots truly women-specific.- C4 padded tongue is comfy over the instep. (Remember, comfort is the #1 factor that femalecustomers look for in a boot.)- Comfort cuffs and Comfort “spoilers” provide softer, contoured padding to accommodate the backof the Achilles and ankle areas- Achilles areas are “notched” down to accommodate back of ankle- Glove leather on tongue (on non-GTX boots) and extra padding for maximum comfort on the instep- Specific boots use a soft glove leather in the upper cuff for a comfortable fit about the ankle area- Flexible soles for easier walking and hiking- Female-specific lasts which are narrow in the heel, higher in the arch and wider at the ballDid you know that women have:- Narrower heels - Proportionally wider forefeet - Higher arches which can create sensitive areason the top of the instep - Lower calves and Achilles tendons - Less padding than men’s feetComfort Cuff andComfort Spoilersprovide softer, contouredpadding to accommodatethe back of the Achillesand ankle areas.Dear LOWA...I love the Mira boots. The very firsttime I had them on, we hiked up a mountain2.5 miles and back. I would have hesitatedto try that with another brand, but I hadconfidence in Lowa’s.From the beginning, the boots werecomfortable and fit like a glove. They providedexcellent traction, and after our four hour hike,my feet felt great. I can’t say enough goodthings about them.I wore my other pair of Lowa hiking bootsto a wedding last weekend ... how versatileis that? Thanks again, we LOVE Lowa!Regards,Carey K.Girl Power

lowa flex/ shankSUPPORT is the #3 factor than consumers look for when buying outdoor footwear. Animportant part of a LOWA boot is its “shank” or “insole” system. What’s so importantabout a shank? Well, the shank affects how the boot will flex while you walk as well asadding torsional stability. Shanks are “sandwiched” between the outsole and midsole.LOWA uses nylon shanks that vary in thickness, are tapered and shaped to determinethe correct flex for each boot. We use nylon shanks in all our boots including the IceComp because, unlike steel shanks, they do not conduct heat or cold and they offermore complete support. (Plus, they don’t set off metal detectors - LOWA’s are TSAfriendly!)LOWA has also developed a specialized “stabilizer” nylon shank for our light hiking andmulti-purpose footwear.Flexes (from the stiffest to the softest)Mtn boots Cristallo GTX Full nylon/rigidBackpacking boots Banff Full nylon/semi rigidTrekking Boots Trekker Full nylon/mid range flexHiking Tanark Full nylon/mid range flexATCRenegade GTX/Kody Stabilizer/medium flexATC Trail Scarab New stabilizer/soft flexATC Tempest/Tempico New stabilizer/soft flexPhoto courtesy of LEKI USADear LOWA...I just wanted to let you know that your bootsrock! I bought my Lady Tempest Lo boots in1999 and for six years now I have done everythingunder the sun in them including step aerobics, hiking, jogging, gardening - you name it- and they are still in great shape. Iam able to wear them to work which Ido on a daily basis during the winter. Ihave toyed with trying to find a newboot, but I have not been able to givethese up yet. I will be sad when thesefall apart. I have tried on differentboots over the past two years and justcan not come to give these up or buyanother pair. My husband laughs at me.Strange as it may sound! They are likeyour favorite blue jeans or t-shirt that you justhave forever!I have never had a pair of shoes last this long.I just wanted to let you know that you have agreat boot. I have not tried any other LOWAproduct, but then again I have not had the needto get any new boots! But you can bet I will getanother pair of LOWAs when needed! I just wantto thank you for the great quality you provide.Francesca S.STEP LIVELYDid you know that the average American office worker only takes about 5,000 steps a day? That’s 3,000-5,000 less than they should be taking if they want to keep fit and not gain those extra lbs. Put a nice newpair of LOWA ATC Trail shoes together with a pair of Nordic walking poles and you get “Nordic Walking”- the latest fitness trend in Europe. It burns up to 40% more calories than walking without poles, increasesyour cardiovascular efficiency by 25%, reduces stress on lower back and knees, strengthens upper bodymuscle groups - including abs, shoulders, chest and back and improves balance. gore-tex ® linings “ guaranteed to keep you dry”GORE-TEX® fabric is specifically engineered to form an impenetrablebarrier against wind and water while maintaining breathability.GORE-TEX ® fabric is waterproofNo matter how wet the going, moisture cannot penetrate through its outerlayer, which is why GORE-TEX® fabric carries the Guaranteed To Keep You Dry®promise.GORE-TEX ® fabric is breathableThe more active you become, the more heat and moisture your body produces.Breathable outerwear and footwear aids your body’s natural cooling process byallowing perspiration vapor to escape. With GORE-TEX® footwear, you stay dry and comfortable when you’re activeand there’s no perspiration buildup to make you cold. See www.gore-tex.comfor more information.Factoid:67% of LOWA customers who have taken oursurvey tell us they’re looking for Gore-Tex® linings.LOWA’s “Lasted” Gore-Tex ® Constructionsospecial it’s patentedWet feet and wrinkles in boot liners cause blisters. Hikers with blisters see less sunsets, smell fewerwildflowers and have a generally miserable time in the outdoors. Then they become bowlers. LOWA’s Gore-Tex® construction is the best way to keep this dreadful fate from happening.LOWA attaches Gore-Tex® to our boots with our proprietary “lasted method”. Instead of using a bootielike the “other guys,” the laminate is stitched to the upper at the cuff, then attached to the insole and thebottom is sealed with Gore-Tex® tape to provide a waterproof “gasket” to the insole of the boot.- The advantage of this construction allows for a smooth and seamless Gore-Tex® lining which reduces thelikelihood of “hot spots.” Furthermore, the spot gluing ensures maximum breathability of the laminate.Different TypesGore-Tex ® Footwear Lining: A two-layer lining material is laminated to the Gore-tex® membrane. The inner material allows perspiration to escape while repelling water. The Hydrofil nylon backingattracts moisture and passes it on to other layers. LOWA uses this lining in our backpacking, trekking, hiking and ATC boots.(Our survey tell us that 31% of our customers are looking for boots with the classic GORE-TEX® “BlackLabel” lining.)Gore-Tex ® XCR Lining: XCR is also a laminate with three layers of material, but it’s designedfor a different set of conditions and use. In addition to being waterproof, it has a high degree ofbreathability. It provides climate-controlled comfort in warmer ambient temperatures and duringincreased physical activity – so it’s ideal for aerobic activities like fast-packing, running, Nordic Walkingand for use in casual shoes. LOWA uses XCR in certain ATC styles that will most likely be worn in warm, highly aerobic conditions. XCR also works great in casual shoes when you need protection from snowand slush combined with indoor comfort and added breathability.(Our survey tell us that 36% of our customers are seeking out footwear with GORE-TEX® XCR.)Gore-Tex ® Lab testing: Just like LOWA, the folks at Gore are obsessed with qualitycontrol. Their extensive testing in the lab and in the footwear factories assures nofailperformance. Factories are chosen and certified by Gore based on their ability tomanufacture a product that meets their high standards. Footwear is regularly testedwith Gore “flexing” and centrifuge machines, which mimic the stresses of in-field use.Photo courtesy of W.L. the construction processCutting- Cutting the leather requires judgement and skill.LOWA leather cutters are the most experiencedworkers in the factory.- Metal die lines of the boot pieces are laid-out on flatsheets of leather hides; the hides are then cut.- Some boots require as many as 25-30 individualpieces of leather and die cut components. From our survey: What is the longestdistance you will hike this year?1-3 miles - 13% • 4-6 miles - 17%7-10 miles - 19% • 11-20 miles - 23%21-50 miles-14%Stitching- Each upper is stitched by hand, with up to 75 steps.- High stress areas are double stitched- New synthetic, non wicking threadis used in all stitching.- When the boot begins to take shape, string laces are used to hold it together.- All stitching is done in factories throughoutGermany, Poland, Croatia, Slovakia and Italy. From our survey: How much do you expectto spend on outdoor boots & shoes?$69 - 7%$126-150 - 14%$70-89 - 9% $150-200 - 16%$90-100 - 13% $201+ - 18%$101-125 - 16%Lasting- The upper is precisely laced for lasting.- The insole or shank is tacked to the boot.- The uppers go through the vapor channel wherethey are conditioned with steam and heat forlasting to make them pliable and to prevent themfrom tearing.- The upper is then stretched over the last and thefore-foot is glued to the insole.- Next, the heel is stretched over the last and tackedand glued to the insole.Construction Process13

the construction processRanding- Hand wrapping rands is a costly process that canonly be done by hand.- The boot is prepared by sanding the bottom sidewalls, then applying the adhesive and wrappingthe rubber rand by hand. Finally, a special machinepresses the rubber rand to the boot upper.Attaching the midsole/outsole to the upperCemented: The midsole and upper are glued togetherand then cemented with adhesive to the upper.Cemented outsoles can be re-soled by a cobbler.Direct Injection: The upper is placed into an injectionmachine and the sole is placed on the bottom of themachine’s mold. PU is injected into the mold, joiningthe upper and sole together. This encapsulates theshank and bonds all the pieces together.Dear LOWA...Dear LOWA,I recently purchased a pair of Lowa Renegade Mid IIs. They are by far the best boots I haveever worn!!!I just came back from my first hike in them. Not too long, about 4 miles or so. The trailhad a mix of conditions: sand, dirt, mud, rock, deadfall, etc. The Renegades plowed right throughit! I have bad feet, thanks to having no arch and bad ankles. The Renegades supported my feetand ankles through the whole hike! I was wondering if my feet would ever hurt. They didn’t! It’sgreat to know that I have finally found a boot that suits my needs. The construction is excellent. The boots held my feet and didn’t let them move. There is noslippage, the cushioning is superb and the treads grip like glue. Several times, I deliberately hikeddown several slick rock faces. I may as well have grown roots. My feet stayed where I plantedthem.I’m hoping to put many more miles on these boots. But, if I ever do need to purchase anotherpair, it will be Lowa! All the best!Dave S.14Construction Process

BecauseEVA is softer, it tends to break down quicker. Infact it can break down just sitting in a box inyour closet. Although EVA is soft and cushiony, ithas a tendency to “chunk out” and tear, and canbe easily punctured. When you see horizontalstriation lines in your EVA midsoles, the materialhas lost all its cushioning ability.SPS TechnologyLOWA’s SPS technology, introduced in 2004, is aproprietary midsole technology. How it works: Byplacing supportive TPU inserts within the softer PUmidsole mold, SPS helps control and prevent theoverpronation and supination that can occur duringwalking. The result:A more balancedand stable stride, forbetter comfort on longhikes and extendedbackpacking trips.- PU is also a foam, usually denser, heavier andmore durable than EVA. PU has a longer life, andalthough it’s a little heavier than EVA, the longterm cushioning, rebound and durability are realbenefits that “outweigh” its actual weight. EVA isgreat for racing shoes - just don’t get stuck in thebackcountry with EVA!- PU is more supportive and cushioned for carryingheavier loads or for use by heavier people.Environmentally speaking, PU foam uses lessdangerous solvents, like highly toxic glue, in theattachment process.PU vs. EVAMedium-weightLight-weightVery supportiveCushionyMore shock absorbing“Chunks out”Long lifeShort lifeNon-toxicToxicSole Units17

Iwork anywhere from 10-12 hours a day, 6 days a week on my feet cooking formy customers and after days like that I still have the energy to be a good dadto my 10 month old son and a good husband to my wife. I truly owe it to myLowa’s. They are without a doubt the most complete and comfortable shoe I’veever worn in the kitchen (and they are grease resistant to boot!). I’ve triedcooking clogs, cooking shoes geared towards chefs in all those catalogs and theyjust cannot compete. I started wearing Lowas in the late 90’s when I lived inColorado. I was a baker and an absolute madman to get my feet on the trailwhenever I could. Even today with owning a restaurant and being a father, Iget to the woods several times a month. My wife Betsy and I both believe thatgetting our dogs and baby boy into the natural world is imperative to a healthy, happy family. From the kitchen to the trail, my Lowa’s never leave my feet. Ibelieve that there is an untouched market for Lowa in the culinary world. It is better than the Scarpa in my opinion just because the cuff is not so boxy. Ithas a much better tongue that makes it more like a ski boot. And the fact that the middlebuckle does not line over the ankle, allows it to walk infinitely better. We climbed theScarpa with the two top buckles open. Don’t have to do that with the Lowa. Just better allthe way around.”Backcountry Gear Guide, 2005: Tester’s comments: “...the Struktura Light Lady enabledme to ski with precision no matter what terrain I was negotiating. With the Pro, they’vehit that mark and more.Dear LOWA...In 2001 I was going to guide Mt. Logan in the Yukon as a skimountaineering trip. I had to decide what boot I wanted for such a coldmountain so I decided on a Struktura Light with a Gore-Tex liner fromthe shelf. I got one size bigger then I usually wear around here in theWasatch or the Alps. I spent 28 days in the boot without any problems(it didn’t even smell too bad!). Even on the one morning that had a -70ºwind chill factor I was never cold or wet. I was also very impressed withits ski performance in climbing/skinning. This is the best boot on themarket. It stayed dry or dried out fast enough to perform.Freddy GrossniklausIFMGA Swiss guidewww.swissrockguides.comStruktura Liner Molding InstructionsIf you have a blowdryer, turn it on medium and place nozzle inside the boot, moving itconstantly so it doesn’t burn the lining. Then place your foot inside, and close buckles.Wear the boot for about 10 minutes...the boot will now be custom-fit to your foot. care and where to repairDryingDid you know that your feet will produce approximately half a pint of sweat after a day of hiking??? To keep yourboots in good shape, your boots will need to dry after a day outside.- Pull laces and open the tongue. Pull out the footbeds and dry boots at ROOM TEMPERATURE.Airing out may take 24 hours.- If very wet, lightly stuff boots with newspaper (this will help in sucking up moisture).- NEVER dry boots in an oven or by a hot fire. The glue that holds the rand and sole together is heat sensitive!Rands and soles that have melted off are not warrantied!WaterproofingCleaning- Brush dirt off the boot, clean off all dirt on the surface off the boot.Remove footbeds and clean the inside, removing dirt and sweat residue.- If boots are really dirty, use saddle soap and rinse wipe thoroughly.- Pull out the laces and open the tongue.- Don’t put your boots in the washing machine or dryer (we are not kidding…)!Treat the boot with any commercially available shoe waterproofing product such as Snoseal, Nikwax or Granger’s.(Do not use mink oil for waterproofing or breaking-in your boots!)NOTE: Also be careful about wearing your boots around fertilizers and other chemicals for your lawn care. Thesechemicals can tend to break down the stitching and leather on your boots and this damage is not warrantied.RepairsA few fit warranty notes:1) “Fit” is not covered in our warranty. YOUdo the fitting, not us!2) LOWAs are not work boots. Don’t sellthem to painters, lawn care workers andsuch. The chemicals they use destroy boots.3) A “year” is a guideline. glossaryAWP: Asymmetric Walking PositionThe ankle section of men’s boots is set at a 2 degree outward angle to provide a more balanced stance, less fatigue and easieroverall break-in period. A woman’s stance is more upright and therefore this angling is not needed. The boot has a raised “scree”collar on the inside (keeps out trail debris and cushions the lower leg).CementedThe type of construction where by the midsole/outsole is attached or “cemented” with glue to the upper of the boot. This type ofconstruction allows the customer to resole their boots.Climate controlThis moisture management system keeps feet dry, protecting against blisters and hot spots. A series of perforations, or holes, inside the boot’s cuff lining allows air to enter the boot lining while walking movement “pumps” heat and moisture back outthrough the holes. Moisture is pulled away from the foot and evaporates while walking.Comfort cuff (women’s)Specially developed for women’s boots to reduce rubbing and discomfort around the back of the Achilles and ankle areas.Contoured soft, expandable cuffs for optimum fit and comfort - helps eliminate pressure points.Comfort cuff spoiler (women’s)Special women’s-only feature on Lady GTX and Arko GTX provides extra comfort around the back of the Achilles area. Specialdesigned tab on back of heel area cradles the Achilles. Extremely soft and flexible for optimum comfort.Cordura ® fabricWoven nylon or polyester/nylon fabric that is abrasion-resistant and very durable.CramponsUsed for climbing ice or traveling on snow. Metal “teeth” which attach to the bottom of a mountaineering boot. Crampons comein two primary styles 1)Strap-on attaches by strapping onto the boot. With this crampon style, midsole/outsole does not needto be completely rigid. 2) Step-in has special ridges at front toe and back heel areas for attachment. With this crampon style,midsole/outsole must be semi-rigid.Direct inject/attachmentRefers to the type of attachment where the midsole/outsole of the boot is attached to the upper in a molded process. The hotPU is in liquid state and is formed between the upper and the sole in the mold.Dri-Lex liningExcellent abrasion resistance. Woven Hydrofil ® nylon moves moisture away from the foot. Helps keep the foot ventilated and dry.EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate)A foam that is ultra lightweight and has cushioning properties. Often used in midsoles and heel wedges.FootbedThe material that is sandwiched between the midsole and sole of your foot. Often times it is anatomically shaped and conformsto the curves of the last. It is made of leather or other synthetic materials. LOWA’s Climate Control footbed allows moisture towick through and be moved away from the foot.Full grain leatherLeather that comes from the outer part of the hide, typically fairly thick & durable. Used mostly in uppers. Holds color well. Couldbe found with nubuck or pull-up leather.Glove leatherLeather is nature’s original moisture management and climate regulator. Soft leather lining cradles the heel and foot area andconforms to the shape of your foot (like a leather glove). Leather lining, like any “skin,” needs to be occasionally cleaned andmoisturized. LOWA’s leather lining is not dyed, so it won’t run or dye your socks or cause an infection on any open blisters or cuts.GORE-TEX ® footwear liningPatented membrane that offers waterproof and breathable comfort in footwear. Made of ultra lightweight, micro porous Teflon ®(PTFE). Membrane is waterproof, but allows water vapor to be permeable. Footwear specific laminate is made of the Gore-Tex®membrane, open cell foam which allows the moisture to move through to a Hydrofil ® nylon backing which attracts moisture andpasses it to the outer layers. Gore-Tex® lined boots are identified by the “GTX” symbol after the LOWA boot name.GORE-TEX ® XCR footwear liningProvides climate control comfort in warmer temperatures and during increased physical activity. New, highly breathablewaterproof lining. Ideal in wet, warm conditions to keep feet cool and comfortable. Gore-Tex® XCR boots are identified withthe “GTX XCR” symbol after the LOWA boot name.28 Glossary

glossaryLastsThe last determines the inner shape of the boot and is the major component in determining the fit. LOWA lasts are preciselydesigned according to years of anatomical data about foot shapes and sizes. Lasts are a molded cast of a foot shape. It providesthe form or template, which the leather upper is shaped upon. LOWA boots are built on different lasts for men and women, tomaximize comfort and fit.Micro-suedeAn ultra lightweight and durable synthetic leather. Has water repellent properties and is used in our ATC Outdoor Fitnesscollection of footwear. Dries quickly, high abrasion resistance.Midsole/OutsoleMidsole is the portion of the boot between the leather upper and rubber outsole. Midsole is often made of PU (polyurethane).Provides cushioning and shock absorption, stability and support. Outsole is made of rubber, often made by Vibram®. Outsolelugs provide traction and stability underfoot.Nubuck leatherUsed in the upper portion of the boot. Full grain leather that has been lightly sanded for a softer, suede-like finish. Durableand rugged.OutsoleThe outermost sole of the shoe, it is generally a rubber or TPU sole unit at the bottom of footwear.PronateThe flattening of the arch when the foot strikes the ground. Excessive pronation causes increased stress on the inside/medialaspect of the foot.PU (polyurethane)Used most often as midsole material. PU in foam form is “blown” with air to produce a foam, usually denser, heavier and moredurable than EVA. Has excellent cushioning properties.RandMost often applied to the toe and heel of a boot to protect against bumping and scraping. Rubber rands are hand-wrapped andglued on; leather rands are sewn on.ShankPart of the midsole, it provides the boot with correct torsional rigidity and appropriate flex. Nylon shanks are sandwichedbetween the midsole and outsole. Vary in stiffness according to category, boot and gender. LOWA uses nylon shanks vs steelbecause nylon does not conduct cold, and nylon offers better support underfoot. Placed in the midsole between the heel and ballof the foot.Split leatherWhen leather is split, the inner, more textured side, or suede is exposed.SPS systemLOWA proprietary technology in which strategically placed TPU (thermoplastic urethane) inserts are placed in the PU(polyurethane) midsole. These visible harder TPU inserts create “zones” of support and literally guide the foot into a properwalking motion.StabilizerPlastic stabilizer is used to provide ankle stability and torsional control underfoot. Placed between the midsole and outsole, it isdesigned to flex and support in LOWA’s ATC boots and shoes. Proportionate support for all foot sizes.SupinateWhen the ankle “tips” outward, so you are standing on the outside border of the foot. Excessive supination predisposes the ankleto injury because the stabilizing muscles on the outside of the lower leg are in a stretched position.TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane)Polyurethane that can be blown or molded. Used in several of LOWA’s ATC Trail shoes. Lightweight, harder than rubber - morewear resistant.Vibram ®Italian company which is one of the most respected manufacturers of outsoles.WXLExpanded toe box. Higher and broader in the front of the foot area.Glossary29

A great letter from a very loyal LOWA customer. Read more letters inside or at lowaboots.comDear LOWA,I bought my LOWA Renegades in 1999 and went to the Amazonwith my son’s science class. Since then I have traveledextensively, all over the world, for work. In one yearI traveled to six of the seven continents, excludingAntarctica. One day at the Great Wall of China I remembered theportrait I had taken of my old workboots when I was in the 5th gradein the early 70s. I had forgotten to bring the subject I wanted to shoot, soI shot my LOWA boots. I decided that I would shoot those boots when Itraveled to interesting places so I could display the pictures on my wall.Meanwhile, Cisco has sent me to Bejing, Sydney, Prague, Munich,Tokyo, Hong Kong, and most cities in Western Europe. The other twophotos I have sent [to LOWA] were from Provincetown Mass. And from Bonnaroo, a music festival in Tenn. last Junewhere the boots were probably tested as much as any othertime. It rained 4-6 inches in 24 hours and turned thefields to mud 6-10 inches deep. My Renegades came throughwith flying colors! I loved slopping through the flood andthe mud knowing my feet would stay dry. I was offered knee-highrubber boots and just laughed. I stayed dry and comfortable.I love these shoes. They fit like glove from the first day I triedthem on. I wear them year round. They are the best all aroundshoe I’ve ever worn. They are the shoes I wear for day hikes inall weather and conditions. They are my first choice when Itour cities around the world. They are my winter boots in thesnow and my mud boots in the spring. They are light, warm, breathable, waterproof and comfortable.– Andywww.lowaboots.com86 Viaduct RoadStamford, CT 06907p: 888-335-5692 f: 203-353-0311LOWA Test CenterJungfraulochInterlaken, Switzerland
