HANDSWORTH GRANGE COMMUNITY SPORTS COLLEGE NEWSLETTER
ISSUE 3 JULY 2011
Dear Parents/Carers
Welcome to the last edition of Believe and Achieve for this academic year. This year seems to have flown.
As I write we have just said our final goodbyes to Year 11 at their Prom. The evening was a great success and we
will of course share the photos with you as soon as they are ready.
Our building work has begun with a vengeance and huge portable classrooms and offices are now on site
waiting for the first ‘decant’ which will take place ready for September. Our builders, Vinci, have been incredibly
supportive and flexible; we are all committed to ensuring that teaching and learning are not disturbed throughout
the two year process.
We welcome some new staff in September and say goodbye to some colleagues who will be sadly missed.
Mrs Joanne Cater Whitham leaves for a deputy headship at Winterhill School in Rotherham. She will be
replaced as Assistant Headteacher by Mr Paul Burrows from Nottingham.
John Beddus – (History) is retiring after 27 years at Handsworth Grange Community Sports College
Kay Ackom Mensah – (Modern Foreign Languages) is retiring after 24 years at Handsworth Grange Community
Sports College but will continue to teach part time in a primary school
Ben Taylor – (Science) is taking up a teaching post in Wakefield
Adam Clark – (Maths) is going to teach at Holgate Meadows Community School
Lynn Paradine – (Health and Social Care/Business) is hoping to teach abroad
Sophie Harold – (PSA) has been accepted to do a PGCE
Mike Smith – (Apprentice Sports Coach) is going to Bishop Burton College
Chris Rogers – (Apprentice Sports Coach) will be working in sports coaching
Finally I would like to thank all parents and pupils for supporting our Stay on Site Policy. Our dinner staff
have responded to the challenge by adding new meals to the menu and creating a texting and email service for
pre orders. Keeping the pupils on site has meant a much safer lunchtime for all and has improved community
relations considerably.
May I wish all our pupils a happy and restful summer break
Having a ball
On Friday 1st July, The Holiday Inn, Rotherham
provided the venue for the annual Year 11 Prom.
Students began to arrive from 7pm, and for the next
hour or so, we were treated to an impressive array of
Hummer Limos, sports and classic cars and even a
“Boogie Bus!” as Year 11 students made their grand
entrances in style. As always, we marvelled at the
fantastic appearance of all our students. The ladies
looked beautiful in a variety of wonderful dresses and
gowns, while the gentlemen were not to be outdone in
their suits. Every single student made a really wonderful
effort on the night, and they certainly looked the part. It
gives all the staff who come to the Prom great pleasure
to see Year 11 students at their finest, and this year was
certainly no different.
The Holiday Inn was our choice for the Prom Venue
this year, and provided a good location for the Prom,
decorations and a tasty buffet. The DJ kept the dance
floor filled for the whole evening, and the Prom
photgrapher also did some brisk trade on the night, as
many students took advantage of the opportunity to
have a professional photograph
taken - a lasting memento of the
evening, and also something for
parents to put on the mantelpiece
at home!
At around 10pm, we moved onto
one of the high points of the
evening, the award for
King and Queen. Our congratulations to the winners
on the night, Ryan Russon and Danielle Holmes, who
were crowned Prom King and Queen 2011. However,
what particularly stood out for me was the wonderful
way in which the Year 11 students praised, cheered the
awards – always a real pleasure to see.
Students danced and sang their way through till
midnight, or sat outside enjoying the fresh air, as the
summer weather was making the room very hot! As
always, the Prom provides one last chance to spend
time together as a whole year group, before the coaches
and limos returned to whisk them all away. I would like
to say thank you to all the staff who attended and were
involved with organising the Prom, particularly the
Finance Office, Tania Tomlinson, Pam Hull, Pete Hurst
and Bev Ramsey for their help on the night.
It must be mentioned that student behaviour
on the night was excellent. From the arrival of
the first limo, through to the very end of the
evening, all of our Year 11 students conducted
themselves superbly, and were an absolute credit
to themselves, and to the school. Next year have a
tough act to follow! Mike Keys Prom Organiser
Time for Change
As we start the very exciting time of rebuilding and refurbishing
our school we are very grateful to Keith Finner for sharing some
important and interesting parts of our past with us. Keith’s father,
Ted Finner was contracts manager for Ackroyd & Abbott Ltd.,
the main contractors for the original school site building in the
1950’s, originally known as Beaver Hill School. Keith has been
kind enough to provide us with some of the original photographs
showing the original school being built. Photographs 1 & 2 are
taken looking up Handsworth Grange Road towards the building
of the school hall and gym; photograph 3 is taken of the school
gym with Handsworth Grange Road in the background and
photograph 4 is taken from the present sports hall area looking
towards the maths and English classrooms block.
We are also grateful to local photographer David Bolsover for
providing us with an aerial photograph of the school in 1997. The
photograph shows the school including the two teaching blocks
and the old inflatable sports hall.
The Big Challenge
This year saw the 4th year of the Big Challenge competition in
Sheffield. Pupils from all schools in Sheffield are invited to enter teams
into a fiercely competitive business contest.
This year’s competition saw an amazing 283 teams entering
from every secondary school in the City. At Handsworth Grange
Community Sports College a total of 14 teams initially entered the
competition but only one team had the impetus and longevity to see
the competition through to the end.
‘A Taste of India’ (the brainchild of Rahan Rahman in year 10). Along
with Mohammed Morshed, Shobnum Khanum and Shabrina Akhter
the team had great success. They produced amazing Indian and
Pakistani food for people to buy at school as a run up to the main
competition scooping the prize for the business which made most
money throughout the competition.
To get this far, firstly the team had to visit Sheffield town hall to
present to a panel of judges. They were then selected to attend the
grand final at the Victoria Park Hotel in Sheffield. This was a very
prestigious event and the team were given their award by Plusnet’s
founder Lee Strafford. Each team member received a cash prize for
£100 pounds. Sadly they didn’t win the
grand prize of an all expenses paid trip
to Madrid.
A Taste of India will be entering the
competition again next year and could
well bag the grand prize if they build on
this year’s success. Congratulations to A
Taste of India from all at Handsworth
Community
in Bloom 2011
One of the annual projects the school
has worked on with Handsworth and
Woodhouse Community Forums over
the last few years is to plant bulbs in the
community to help bring some spring
cheer and colour. We are very pleased
with how some of the areas we have
been involved were looking really good
this spring.
School Gains Eco
School Award
A huge part of the successful Healthy Schools Award achieved in
2008 was due to the efforts and contribution of the pupils involved
in the Healthy School & Community Young Leaders group. This
group continues to work tirelessly to help make the school a
cleaner, greener and more environmentally friendly school, with
support from staff co-ordinators Mrs Robinson and Mr Hudson.
One of the many tasks of the group currently is to work towards
Silver Eco Schools Status.
The photograph shows some of the members of Healthy Schools
and Community Young Leaders group; and the staff co-ordinators
with the School Leadership team in front of the Sheffield Healthy Schools
banner which was recently on display in the school reception area.
Science in Action
As part of Sheffield Environment Weeks, Friends of Shirtcliffe and
Handsworth Grange School organised a count of the red-listed Adder’s Tongue
Fern on Severnside Meadow, which is part of Shirtcliffe Valley.
In attendance were Mr Priestley, Mr Hudson, Mrs Robinson, Dr Connelly
and 14 students from Year 7 & 8. Also present were 4 members of Friends of
Shirtcliffe and Ziggy Senkans,
the Biodiversity Monitoring
Officer.
The event began at 9:30 AM
and consisted of 2 activities:
the main activity being the
Fern Count, the second activity
being a Woodland Tour. The
students were then shown some
of the plants that are Ancient
Woodland Indicators – they were
particularly impressed by the
masses of Bluebells and Wild
Garlic (did you know that Wild
Garlic is edible, and very tasty?).
The overall result was excellent –
with over 600 ferns being found.
Mr Priestley will collate the
records and will produce a map
and statistics to go forward to the
The Big Tree
Plant Campaign
The Healthy Schools & Community Young
Leaders is supporting the Big Tree Plant, a
national campaign to plant 1 million trees by
2014. A free tree growing pack was provided
to the school after we applied to be part of
the scheme. The Big Tree plant is the first
government tree planting campaign since the
1970s and it aims to increase the amount of trees
in urban areas, and engage the local community
in the well-being of those areas for the future.
Pedals at the Ready
The school and partners ‘Pedal Ready’ ran another
successful Level 2 Road Safety Cycle training in February
2011. Forty three pupils have now passed either Level
2 or Level 3 Road Safety Training since we bought our
cycle lockers and became a ‘Bike It’ school. Pupils are
required to attend road safety cycle training before they
are awarded a ‘passport to Cycle to School’ and issued with
a cycle locker. Eighteen of the twenty five cycle lockers
were being used regularly recently after the last training.
The photograph shows some of the pupils involved in the
February at their presentation evening on 7th March 2011.
Due to the current school buildings work the cycle lockers
are temporarily unavailable for use but we hope pupils will
be back safely cycling to school in the near future.
Cambridge
University Visit
On Friday 18th February 2011,
40 of our Year 10 Aim Higher
and Gifted & Talented pupils
visited Fitzwilliam College in
Cambridge.
The morning session consisted
of a talk by University lecturer
Professor Peter J Renfrow
followed by talks and group
discussions with University
mentors.
After lunch pupils had a tour of
Cambridge where they saw St
John’s, and King’s Colleges to
name but a few.
Year 11 Leaving
Assembly, Friday May
27th 2011
Friday May 27th saw the final day for our Year 11
Pupils and their leaving assembly. The day was
very emotional and a huge success.
The Main Hall was filled to capacity with proud
family, pupils and staff. Highlights included
Alice Gilbert-Twigg winning the “Ultimate Y11
Pupil” Award.
Celina Gitau won the Amy Ruth Hurditch
Award, receiving a well deserved standing
round of applause from the entire room. Each
year, this special award is presented to a Year 11
student who has overcome adversity. Celina is
an incredible pupil and person who I am certain
will be a huge success in the future.
The ceremony was punctuated by 5 different
video slideshows showing pupil pictures and
videos from Year 7 to Year 11. These videos
created quite a few tears! I was really impressed
with the way that the Year 11’s conducted
themselves throughout the event, and the special
gifts and heartfelt speeches presented to their
tutors.
I am sure that Year 11 will do everyone proud
with their GCSE results in August.
Mike Keys Head of Year 11
Pamper Day at The
Sheffield School of
Health and Beauty
Students who have been attending the Beauty
Consultancy course were able to invite their
mums or carers to attend a pamper day at the
College as part of a Mother’s Day celebration
This was an excellent opportunity for parents
to look around the facilities at the college and
benefit from the skills developed by the girls.
Mums received a mini facial and a make -over
as part of their treatments
on the day. It was a fantastic
experience and all the mums
enjoyed spending time with
their daughters.
Well Done Girls but the make
-over did not really achieve
the 10 years off that I was
looking for!!!
Aiming High
Congratulations to 42 of our
year 9 and 10 Aimhigher
pupils who successfully
completed a one to one
mentoring course with
Sheffield University.
Parents and pupils were
invited to the University to
receive their certificates in a graduation style
ceremony on 16 May.
In the current climate it is crucial that our
pupils receive the best possible support and
advice about progression routes and the benefits
of HE as an investment for their futures
Well Done to all - and good luck for the future.
SPECIALIST STATUS NEWS
Handsworth Grange ‘Get
Set’ for the Olympics!
We are delighted to announce that Handsworth Grange Community Sports
College has been officially welcomed in to London 2012’s Get Set network, in
recognition of our commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values. Jake
Cook, Y11 pupil and Gold Young Ambassador, completed the application
form and provided information on why the school should be awarded ‘Get
Set’ status, using our extensive Sports Leadership programme as an example
of outstanding practice.
Jake Cook said ‘as part of the Sports Council we get loads of opportunities
to work with younger pupils in our primary schools, which is brilliant! This
year we have been teaching pupils about the Olympic and Paralympic Values
and how they can use them in school and life to achieve great things. I have
delivered assemblies to Year 3 pupils and then taught them how to play
games that use the values of respect and friendship’
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic
Games (LOCOG) awarded the official plaque and certificate to acknowledge
our involvement in the London 2012 education programme. We now join
schools and colleges across the UK as members of the special London 2012
community – the Get Set network - and will receive access to exclusive
competitions and 2012 Games related opportunities over the coming years.
Sebastian Coe, chairman of LOCOG, said: “When London won the right to
host the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, we made a clear promise to
use the power of the 2012 Games to inspire young people.
“I am proud to welcome Handsworth Grange in to the Get Set network for
their exciting work around the Olympic Values of friendship, excellence and
respect and the Paralympic Values of inspiration, courage, determination and
equality.”
Ms Quaile, Headteacher said: ‘‘Sports Leaders at Handsworth
Grange are excellent examples of how London 2012 can be used
to help spark young people’s imagination and inspire them to get
involved and make a difference. They have clearly demonstrated
that London 2012’s education programme extends far beyond PE
and sport and I hope they will motivate other young people to
join their journey.’
Year 3 ‘Get Set’
Mini-Olympics
A part of the schools involvement in the ‘Get Set’ network
the KS4 Sports Council and Sports Leaders planned and
delivered a Mini-Olympics festival to Year 3 pupils from
Ballifield, Brunswick and Prince Edwards Primary Schools.
The aim of the event was:
To run a fun, active sports festival using the inspiration of
the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
To encourage pupils to demonstrate the Olympic and
Paralympic Values sport
Use Sports Leaders and Young Ambassadors as role models to
motivate and inspire the Year 3 pupils to take part in sport
During the morning the pupils were split into ‘Olympic’
teams and completed against other countries in athletics
related activities like long jump and relay races. They
earned points for performance and also for displaying the
values of friendship, respect and determination. Jake Cook
delivered his Olympic presentation as part of this Young
Ambassador role and taught the pupils about the Olympic
and Paralympic Values.
We were also delighted to have Year 6 Sports
Leaders from Brunswick Primary School
helping us on the day. Ellis Robinson, Jade
Maltby and Rebecca Cassim acted as Media Leaders
and they interviewed pupils and took photographs of
the event.
Playground To Podium
The first “Playground To Podium” event of the 2010-
11 academic year took place at the EIS on the 12th
October. The event provided pupils with an opportunity
to experience paralympic style sports including boccia,
football, athletics and cricket. Pupils also had the chance
to complete sports assessment cards where pupils can
track their progress online.
The pupils that took part in the event from Handsworth
Grange were Amy Keller, Bethany Vaughan, Sam
Deakin, Paige Jeffrey, Mumin Samad, Loran Timson,
and Charlie Passmore.
It was great to see everyone having a great time and
giving 100%. A big well done to you all!
P2P Swimming Event
The second playground to podium event took place
on the 19th November 1pm-3pm at ponds forge. This
event was swimming based with Callum O’Mara, Jordan
Proctor and Amy Keller representing Handsworth
Grange. Pupils took part in a fun splash session which
was followed by a series of swimming assessments that
took place in the main competition pool.
All pupils enjoyed the session and were a credit to the
school!
A regular weekly playground to podium multi-sport
coaching session is in the planning stages to take place
after Christmas.
Olympic Bobsliegher, Nicola Minichiello, joined us at the
festival to help celebrate the school achieving ‘Get Set’ status.
She talked to the pupils about the Olympic and Paralympic
Mascots; how they were made and why they are called the
names they have.
Wenlock is the Olympic Mascot and is named
after Much Wenlock in Shropshire. This is a
town that is at the heart of Olympic history. In the
19th century, Baron Pierre de Coubertin was invited
there to watch the ‘Much Wenlock Games’ inspired by
the Olympic Games of ancient Greece. De Coubertin
was inspired by the Wenlock Games too, and went on
to found the modern Olympic movement. The Much
Wenlock Games are still held annually to this day!
Mandeville is the Paralympic Mascot and is named
after Stoke Mandeville in Buckinghamshire and this is the
birthplace of the Paralympic Games. On the
same day as the Opening Ceremony of the
London 1948 Olympic Games, Sir Ludwig
Guttmann held his own sport competition
in Stoke Mandeville for World War II soldiers
with spinal injuries. It was no coincidence – Sir
Ludwig dreamed of a ‘parallel Olympics’
for athletes with disabilities. The Stoke
Mandeville Games grew and grew until
they became the Paralympic Games.
Blast Off
Blastoff is a Football on Your Doorstep
initiative for 11 - 16 year olds organised
and delivered by Activity Sheffield.
It provides fun, structured and safe
sessions at vulnerable times of the year.
Blastoff is currently being delivered on
the new Astroturf on a Friday evenings
5.00pm-7.00pm at a cost of £1 per
player.
Through close working with the
Handsworth SSCo, Activity Sheffield
were able to offer 3 taster sessions to
pupils at lunchtimes to promote the
Friday evening session and encourage
pupils to setup and enter their own
5-a-side football team into the
competition. The taster sessions saw 75
pupils take part and a steady increase in
the number of pupils taking part on a
Friday evening has been seen due to the
taster sessions.
Y10’s Top Activity
The Y10 PAYL members Penny Rawlings, Bailey Wattam, Bradley Pickering, Josh Walker, Natasha Ford
and Y9 Josh Towers have been delivering a “Top Activity” multi-sport club on a Thursday evening at
Brunswick Primary School. The session was aimed to provide Y2 pupils with a range of fun coaching
opportunities in a variety of sporting disciplines. The session was certainly a big challenge for the Y10’s
but they did themselves proud and as usual were a credit to the school. A big well done to you all!!
PE Festivals and Competitions
Between Easter and Spring Bank Y9 and Y10 young leaders as part of Active IQ and BTEC have
organised and delivered various competitions and festivals including a rugby, tri-golf and tennis event.
Over 300 different children from Brunswick, Athelstan, Ballifield and St Josephs attended the events
and thoroughly enjoyed them. The next events are the rounders competition on the 10th June and
cricket competition on the 13th June.
After School Parkour
September saw the start of a 10-week block of parkour activities funded
through Forge School Sport Partnership and Sport Unlimited. Parkour is the
physical discipline of training to overcome any obstacle within one’s path
by adapting one’s movements to the environment. It is a non-competitive,
physical discipline of French origin in which participants run along a route,
attempting to negotiate obstacles in the most efficient way possible. Skills
such as jumping and climbing, or the more specific parkour moves are
employed. The goal is to get from one place to another using only the human
body and the objects in the environment. The obstacles can be anything
in one’s environment, but parkour is often seen practiced in urban areas
because of the many suitable public structures available such as buildings
and rails. The alternative activity has proven to be a real success with a total
After School Hockey
Rotherham Hockey Club (RHC) in partnership with Forge School Sport Partnership and Handsworth
Grange has been delivering a 10-week block of after school hockey sessions on the new Astroturf.
A total of 10 pupils have taken advantage of the free coaching sessions on offer. Pupils have had the
opportunity to learn and develop new skills along with a chance to participate in a festival that is
scheduled to take place in week 10 of the programme.
RHC also hope that through the after school sessions some of the children might even decide to join
RHC after the 10-week block comes to a close and participate in hockey on a more regular basis.
Handsworth Grange is one of 8 schools in the country to be chosen to be part of the coaching strand
create some case studies. A CD resource must also be created linked to the awards that will be distributed
to schools nationwide come 2012.
