AE Legacy Team A/TA Hall of Fame
Sculpture Unveiled at Scott AFB, Illinois
The “AE Medallion” sculpture representing
the 2007 A/TA Hall of Fame Inductee
group, the AE Legacy Team, was
unveiled during a late morning ceremony
at Scott AFB, Illinois, on 25 September
– taking its rightful place alongside
the busts of the previous 19 members of
the A/TA Hall of Fame.
Six of the eight members of the AE
Legacy Team were present for the unveiling
(pictured L to R): Col. Dennis “Bud”
Traynor USAF (ret); Lt. Gen (Dr.) Paul
K. Carlton, Jr., USAF (ret); Col. (Dr.) Jay
Johanningman, USAF; Col. Regina Aune
USAF (ret); CMSgt Rodney Crista, USAF;
and, Col. Robert Brannon, USAF (ret).
Also in attendance were: General
Arthur Lichte, commander AMC; General
Duncan McNabb, commander
USTRANSCOM; two members of the
A/TA Hall of Fame, General Duane
Cassidy, USAF (ret) and MajGen James
“Bagger” Baginski USAF (ret); several
members of the A/TA national Board of
Officers, as well as many other distinguished
visitors.
the A/TA Huyser Chapter, acted as emcee
for the ceremony. During his opening remarks,
while providing details about the
A/TA Walk of Fame, an unexpected gust
of wind prematurely unveiled the sculpture.
After helping to quickly re-veil the
sculpture, Col McCrave introduced General
Arthur Lichte, commander AMC.
During his remarks, Gen Lichte
thanked the AE community, many of
whom were in the audience, for their
hard work and dedication to the mission
– encouraging them to continue the legacy
represented by the day’s events.
Following the general’s remarks, Col
McCrave introduced, CMSgt Mark Smith,
USAF (ret) who addressed the crowd on
behalf of acting A/TA Chairman Walter
Kross. At the end of his remarks, Chief
Smith asked all the members of the AE
Legacy Team to participate in the “official”
unveiling. The well received “AE
Medallion” sculpture, by world renown
sculptor (and ret. Air Force Col.) Jerry
McKenna, is a stately addition to the
Walk of Fame.
Following the unveiling, Col McCrave
introduced Col Aune who spoke about
the AE mission being an “Affair of the
Heart.” She closed by saying “… the AE
Legacy Team has been given an honor
which we hold in trust for the thousands
who have and continue to perform the
AE mission.”
Following the ceremony at the Walk
of Fame, a large portion of the audience
joined the Hall of Famers, at a luncheon
hosted by the Huyser Chapter.
Rheinland-Pfalz Chapter
The Rheinland-Pfalz Chapter at Ramstein
Air Base, Germany played host to distinguished
guests at its July meeting – guest
speaker Maj Gen Ron Ladnier, the 17th AF
Commander, and surprise visitor, retired
July meeting, stresses the importance of
good communication during his presentation.
General Ladnier presented a well received
talk about the importance of communication.
Chief Smith talked briefly about flying
with Gen (then Captain) Ladnier, presented
an update on the 2008 Convention and
explained the decision by Gen Fogelman to
step aside as Chairman of the Association.
The highly decorated 723rd Air Mobility
Squadron had the distinct pleasure of hosting
Chief Smith during his stay at Ramstein. The
723d AMS is the Air Mobility Command’s
second largest unit with an astounding 906
assigned personnel. Their commander, Lt
Col Vernon Lucas, likes to refer to them as
“the straw that stir’s the Air Mobility Command’s
drink!” They are the premier mobility
machine in the USAFE theater.
The unit was named the 2007 National
Defense Transportation Association Unit
of the Year Award recipient, the Air Force’s
nominee for the 2008 Air Force Association
Citation of Honor Award and was recently
awarded their second consecutive Air Force
Outstanding Unit Award. The unit was recently
rated “Excellent” during the Air Mobility
Command’s Logistics Standardization
and Evaluation Program inspection. The
unit is comprised of an aerial port, maintenance
flight, C-17 Stage, and aero medical
evacuation flight.
Last year the 723d played a pivotal role in
both Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and
IRAQI FREEDOM by moving 265,000 passengers
and 100,000 tons of cargo on over 15,000
missions. They are well on their way to
Captain Ladnier, gets a laugh from Gen
visit to the Rheinland-Pfalz Chapter in
July. (Rheinland-Pfalz Photo).
surpassing those end of year totals in 2008.
The 723rd AMS is well represented in
the Rheinland-Pflaz Chapter, as three of
their members are on the executive board.
The unit leads the way with attendance at
monthly meetings and truly personifies
the spirit of the Airlift/Tanker Association.
CMSgt (ret) Smith could not say enough
about the professionalism of the members
of the unit during his visit.
