What should I ask the
plumber?
• Is the quote inclusive of all costs to
connect?
• Is there any work you can do yourself
i.e. removing plants etc.?
• Will it be cheaper if your neighbour
connects at the same time?
• What about grey water reuse, what
would be required if I want to reuse our
grey water to flush our toilet or water
our garden?
Will the plumber dig a trench
or tunnel?
In most cases, the plumber will dig a trench
for the pipe, however, sometimes a boring
method is used so as not to disturb existing
driveways, paving, retaining walls and
extensive gardens. Ask your plumber to
explain their chosen method.

the Plumbing Industry Commission’s criteria
to perform works as an endorsed Sanitary
Plumbing and/or Draining Work Contractor.
Please request these contractors, or any other
contractor of your choice, to provide evidence of
current endorsement from the Plumbing Industry
Commission when providing a quotation to connect
your property. This list of contractors is supplied
to assist you to obtain quotes and in no way does
Yarra Valley Water recommend or endorse any

Finding a plumber
For your convenience we have provided a list of plumbers in your area who have indicated that they
may be able to assist you in obtaining quotes to connect. Alternatively you may wish to contact your
peferred local plumber to provide a quote. Once you have chosen a plumber to carry out the work
you can hand them the enclosed voucher to redeem your free plumbing application. This voucher
contains the relevant property information the plumber will need to lodge your application and
receive approval.

Protecting your environment
Previous development in
Melbourne resulted in a large
number of properties being built
before sewerage infrastructure
was available.
The result is over 17,000 properties across
Melbourne’s northern and eastern suburbs
using septic tank / waste water systems
that are not performing to acceptable
standards – each one a potential risk to
the environment, public health and our
waterways.
Yarra Valley Water is investing $320
million over the next 20 years to bring new
sewerage services to these properties
across its service area.

What will I pay for?
Yarra Valley Water has provided the
sewerage infrastructure to the boundary
of your property. You are responsible for
arranging and paying for the plumbing
work to disconnect and decommission
your septic tank and connect your
property into the new sewerage service.
It is important to note that this cost will
vary from property to property and we
therefore cannot provide an estimate. We
do recommend that you obtain several
quotes from licensed plumbers.
While Yarra Valley Water covers the
majority of costs associated with
construction, all properties served
by Yarra Valley Water are required to
contribute $500 towards the cost of
bringing the new sewer to the community.
This will be applied as a $25 per quarter
charge over a five year period. Should the
customer connect within 12 months of
sewer being made available any monies
already paid by the customer will be
credited to their account. This fee is an
owner based charge, and full payment of
the outstanding balance is required by the
vendor if the property is sold within the
five year chargeable period.

The customer sends a copy of their Compliance Certificate to Yarra Valley Water to qualify for wavering of the $500
contribution fee
