From the Fleet and the Field The Ship that Started It All USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) was commissioned on July 4, 1991 in Norfolk, Virginia. In recognition and celebration of its 18th year of service to the nation and the fleet of DDG 51 Class ships that followed, we recognize that this ship will always be one of the special ones in the hearts and minds of BIW shipbuilders. In addition to being the lead ship, we were fortunate to have ADM Arleigh Burke (USN ret.) and his wife and ship sponsor, Bobbie Burke, with us on many occasions as the ship was built, at the launch and at the commissioning. ADM Burke was one of the giants of the WWII-era U.S. Navy, yet he and his wife were uncommonly gracious and self-effacing individuals whose focus was always on the people who were building the ship and the sailors who would depend on it for years into the future. This July, DDG 51 arrived in the port of Durban, South Africa for cooperative activities to enhance maritime interoperability between the navies of the U.S. and South Africa. DDG 109 Mast Stepping On Saturday, July 11, the Mast Stepping Ceremony for Jason Dunham (DDG 109) was held at BIW with the ship’s officers and precommissioning crew present, as well as representatives of SupShip, the Navy and BIW. Members of the Dunham family, including the ship’s sponsor, Debra Dunham, the mother of Jason Dunham, were in attendance. The event consisted of a brief ceremony at the MSC building after which a small number of participants walked to the ship where the commemorative coins and items related to CPL Dunham’s service were placed in a special box which was permanently welded to the inside of the mast. The ship-based portion of the ceremony was displayed by video feed to the guests remaining at MSC. DDG 109 will be christened on August 1, 2009. The mast stepping was held in advance of the week of the August 1, 2009 christening to limit disruption to work onboard ship and also to allow time for a tour of the ship by the Dunham family prior to the christening. Throughout this period, the Dunham family, the U.S. Navy and christening guests will commemorate the memory of CPL Jason Dunham, USMC, who gave his life in Iraq and posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his sacrifice. CDR Scott Sciretta, PCO of DDG 109, wrote in an email to Jeff Geiger, On behalf of Mr. and Mrs. Dunham and the sailors and families of PCU JASON DUNHAM, I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation for the hard work and effort put forth ... during this past weekend’s Mast Stepping ceremony. Every aspect of the event was absolutely perfect. The positive feedback I have received in just 48 hours is overwhelming….The remarks delivered by Major Trent Gibson, USMC (Jason’s Company Commander in Iraq), along with Major Gibson’s presentation of a piece of the Kevlar helmet worn by Jason for placement in the Mast Stepping box were incredibly moving…We are forever grateful for the ultimate sacrifice Jason made for us, our children and future generations. During Major Gibson’s remarks, he spoke to the ship’s crew about the concept of selfless sacrifice which Jason Dunham embodied and of what CPL Dunham’s service symbolized for their ship. He also said, “I’d like to thank BIW and the professionals of that great company who have been serving our nation and doing this thing for over a hundred years. Without the work that you do, we would not be the nation that we are.” 8 | July 2009 | BIW NEWS
New EDP Class Announced In mid-July, BIW’s Engineering Division selected three individuals to enter the latest class of the Engineering Development Program (EDP). Bob Beagan, Mark Fochesato and Ian Pillsbury (all D40) comprise the Class of 2011. Norm Richard (D0140) said, “EDP is BIW’s longest running development program, now starting its 18 th class.” The two-year program consists of seven or eight assignments in various areas of the company which the individuals self-identify as having development opportunities in line with their goals and interests. Through the series of rotation assignments, students learn, lead and develop relationships within Engineering and other areas of the company, develop technical leadership capabilities and gain an understanding of how Engineering can effectively interact with other departments. Norm said, “The program is primarily leadership development, so we look for engineers who have exhibited potential in that regard through their performance at BIW, previous job experiences and the recommendations of their managers. We expect them to broaden their knowledge of the company and develop their leadership capabilities so that they graduate a more capable, but also more well-rounded engineer than when they started.” EDP Class of 2011, l to r: Bob Beagan, Ian Pillsbury and Mark Fochesato. Briefly, Bob Beagan has been a principal hull outfit engineer at BIW for two years after graduating from Maine Maritime Academy and then working for 13 years in maritime-related engineering positions. He holds various professional licenses and is interested in learning the complete shipbuilding process from concept to delivery. Mark Fochesato graduated from the University of Maine in Orono and worked in several engineering positions, including General Motors, before joining the DDG 1000 program as a systems engineer at BIW about two years ago. He is wrapping up details associated with his current job and looking forward to his first EDP assignment starting in September. Ian Pillsbury has been a BIW structural engineer for four years after graduating with both a bachelors and master’s degree from the University of Maine in Orono. He recognizes that leadership requires communications, delegation and teamwork and sees the EDP program as a means to further develop these skills. As the Class of 2011 begins its work, two other groups are also progressing. Jamie Berg, Phil Laperriere and Kevin Stevenson, the Class of 2009, conclude their program this fall and are preparing to transition into permanent assignments while the Class of 2010, Chris Ouellette, Ben Skinner and Will Woerter, are one year into their program at this time. While EDP is an engineering program at the core, participants are able to take advantage of opportunities in other areas of the company. Whatever the path these EDP students and graduates choose, they have proven, over the past 16 years, the ability of the program to develop and strengthen leadership skills within Engineering while improving Engineering’s connections to BIW at all levels.
