Mmino ke tholwana ya bophelo
BY P. HORN | FOUNDATION Mmino ke tholwana ya bophelo: music is the fruit of life. From 11–21 May, fifty-six DCS high
school choir and marimba band members shared the music and rythyms of Africa with the people of the United Kingdom.
Audience members, including Sir Richard Branson, were literally swept off their feet by the music, the fruit of life, and the
fruit of years of development by choirmistress Rosalia Motha and marimba band instructor Linky Kokolo.
The school's first international tour could not have been possible without the generous support from Stowe School, Sherborne
School for Girls, and Francesca Welbore-Ker, nor the tireless efforts of Colin Dudgeon and the DCS staff. To view
FROM THE HEADMASTER’S DESK
Music: mind, body, soul
I spent many days with the choir and marimba band on tour in the UK. Mrs. Motha
and Mrs. Kokolo led the children in excellent performances at breathtakingly beautiful
venues. Over 2500 people heard our choir and marimba band perform, and the students
were superb ambassadors for Dominican and for South Africa. Many people who saw
the performances remarked how music filled every fibre of our students, "from their
fingertips to their toes." It wasn't long before our own fingers and toes were joining in
the performance—some more stiffly than others! Witnessing this transcendent joy I
was reminded that we should all make more time to fully experience music in our lives:
body, mind, and soul. Thank you to all, near and far, who made this tour possible.
