Dominican hosted the Sesotho, Sepedi,
Setswana National User Group Conference
to discuss different approaches to
teaching and share resources.
National IEB examiner, and DCS seSotho
teacher Nthabiseng Selibe, convened
a panel of 9 academics, authors, and
practitioners from across the country,
who presented to 21 teachers. Fiona
Kampmann explained IEB issues such as
oral moderation, decoding, poetry and
language structure. Prof. Sebate gave
a presentation on cognitive levels, and
author Winston Mohapi provided an
overview on how to differentiate analysis

The challenges facing African languages
were also discussed. DCS students also
had the chance to meet with Mr. Mohapi,
the author of Setsokotsane Sa Etsa Moferefere,
a set work they had read in Grade 9.
One of the students later remarked:
"Meeting Mr. Mohapi was a great honour.
He told us about his books and it's
amazing to know that he wrote his first
book when he was in Matric. This made
us realise that there is always time to do
what you like, regardless of being

A Circle of Faith
San visit
The San (Bushmen) hunter gatherers visited
our school on 8 February to share their
culture with us. In the 20th century the San
lived in Angola, but because of war they
were moved to the Kalahari Desert. I learnt
that san means "thieves," and they prefer being
called Bushmen.
They showed us the bow and arrow, traditional
drums, and necklaces and bracelets
made out of ostrich eggs. Kutlwano and I
danced with the San women and enjoyed it.
They also shared their traditional medicine

This was an important week in our Christian calendar with Ash Wednesday marking
the start of our Lenten journey of preparation. Here at Dominican we are rooting
our personal and community journey in a circular theme, starting with a Circle of
Faith, which is the theme for the worldwide Catholic community in 2013. As we
examine ourselves and prepare ourselves for a renewal by Easter, I encourage us all to
re-commit ourselves to our personal faith, and to add a special prayer for the church
as it readies itself to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI. May we all find that this
journey to a renewed church mirrors our own journey to a renewed self.
