2007 Gold Awardees
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award earned by girls in Girl Scouting. Girls who
earn the award are committed to making a positive change in their communities. They
demonstrate this commitment by completing several hours of community service; they
complete skill-building and leadership requirements prior to beginning their project, which
addresses a need in their community. By the time a young woman is pinned with her
Gold Award during a traditional Girl Scout ceremony, she has proven to herself and her
community that she is in fact a leader.
Emily Peterson
Emily Peterson completed her project as a
graduating senior at Armijo High School in Fairfield
and was a member of the council’s Board of
Directors. As a member of the board she advised
the council on issues that affect girls. She has
been a member of the Program Operating Unit
for four years where she worked with a team
to create and implement special programs for
girls in Solano and Napa Counties. Since 2005
she has been a trainer, leading trainings for new
adult Girl Scout volunteers. In 2005 she also
served as a delegate to the National Convention
and participated in the National Girl Congress,
which examined contemporary issues facing girls
throughout the nation. She was her high school’s
Junior Class President and Student Body Vice
President.
For her Gold Award project Emily addressed the
issue of decreased college enrollment among
high school students. She developed a college
mentoring program at Armijo High School which
pairs graduating seniors with underclassmen in
order to help them navigate the path to college.
She worked with the school’s career advisor to
gather information on various college admission
requirements. Once compiled, she put the
information in a format to be used by mentoring
pairs. Her goal was to help new high school
students realize that college isn’t that far out of
reach and that there are lots of benefits to higher
education.
Lauren Young
Lauren Young wants to raise community
awareness and create a place where people can
learn about the environment. In hopes to inspire
people to take more pride in their environment,
Lauren created an interpretive trail at Rockville
Park in Fairfield for her Gold Award project.
Interpretive trails include numbered stops with
corresponding paragraphs in a pamphlet informing
travelers about the surrounding environment.
Lauren worked closely with a ranger who assisted
her in finding the trail and helped her overcome
various obstacles. A biologist assisted her in
identifying many of the plants, and her school’s
Scarlet Brigade Unit provided tools for the
project’s completion.
Lauren served as Senior Class President at
Fairfield High School and has been a National
Honor Society member for all four years of high
school. She was noted in Who’s Who of High
School Students and has received the Fairfield
High School Academic Merit Award all four years.
A member of the Fairfield Youth Commission
and the Trail Crew at Rockville Park, Lauren
completed her Silver Award in 2003.

Program Highlights
Nothing Says “Home Sweet Home”
Like Girl Scout Cookies
The Napa-Solano legacy council brightened the day of deployed servicemen and
women. Vacaville Troop #369 Leader Debra Moore and her husband Lieutenant
Colonel Mike Moore arranged transport of over 4,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies.
During the sale, the council offered to match any donations up to 2,000 boxes, as
part of the Gift of Caring Program. Many Girl Scout troops took advantage of this
opportunity and promoted the Gift of Caring Program at their booth sales. Cases
of cookies started piling into the Fairfield office as the sale ended. Many soldiers in
Kuwait, Baghdad, Afghanistan, and Iraq received the treats.
Steps to Success
Girl Scouts were on the GO! To celebrate our 95th birthday girls took the challenge
to be healthy and strong, pledging to “be fit and thrive at 95” by walking 95 miles
as a troop, or 95,000 steps individually. Together, Napa-Solano logged 24,311,556
steps. The average number of steps per participant…273,164!

Fishing Derby
A collaboration with Colliers
International gave girls in some
of our outreach groups the
opportunity to try fishing. With
a family adult favorite fella girls
learned fishing techniques, knottying
and casting from Collier’s
International staff. Prizes went
for the biggest, the first, and the
most fish caught. The elation on
the faces as girls reeled in their
catch was truly worth the cold
and windy day! When asked what
they liked best about the event
most stated getting to spend
more time with their male adult
partner!
